    I went this year and it was wonderful 😍 Also the organization is very friendly and they gave me press access so I could make a show report. But the best thing is the camping 😍 Because my 1965 unimog was broken I had to rent a vanlife van. But I parked it between a Man Kat 4x4 and VW T4 synchro. Total opposites of overlanding but that makes it interesting. Everyone has their own stories and experiences.
    And it is a great place to meet other content creators.
    I got recognized by 3 people 😄

    That does look like a great show to visit. I tried to avoid shows in general, but if I'm ever in a position to start travelling like that I'll definetely will go there first for inspiration.
    BTW the last bit of abenteuer isn't pronounced as 'ture' but as 'toyer', the first bit is spot on. Makes you sound like you belong in The Eagle Has Landed, mixing abenteuer and adventure together.

    Andrew, this show looks amazing! The phrase "kid in a candy store" comes to mind when I see the look in your eyes. My wish list gets even longer seeing the products you spotlighted and even the things I catch out of the corner of my eye. I'd especially like to see more on the line of Volkswagen products that we'll never see here in the States:(

    As overlanding continues to grow here in the states, I hope to see more truck camper manufactures develop an "off road" camper like the Four Wheel Camper. Their a great alternative for the weekend warrior who does not want or can afford a dedicated rig.

    I don't know why I never commented on this, as I did explain the hardtop Land Cruisers in the first of your Abenteuer videos. :)
    It obviously depends on the interior layout of those hard shell camper bodies with pop up tent tops, but I think it's about being able to choose depending on the climate. If you imagine doing an Alaska to Patagonia trip or similar, you can keep the top closed when the weather is bad or if it's cold in Alaska or whatever and simply sleep/live in the hard shell. But when you get the southern USA, Mexico, South America etc. you then have the option of popping the top and get more space and potentially sleeping up top if the layout permits it.
    It's sort of like the Land Cruisers from Toms Fahrzeugtechnik in that sense I suspect. You can live inside of them and just keep the top closed if the weather is bad. But you still have the option of popping the top and enjoying the weather when you get to warmer regions. :)

    Btw, plenty of people take large vehicles to other continents all the time. They do often get broken into but from what I've heard it's simply about not having anything worth stealing in it during transport. If the crew steals a pot or a pan it's not like it's hard getting a new one in the USA, Australia or wherever you're going. You can make sure they see that it's basically an empty container when it's transported on to the ship... You could even leave it unlocked as the crew need the keys anywhere to get it to the ship. Then someone may open the door and realize there's nothing of value in it and leave again. Not a big issue.

    G'day Andrew nice video & yes it seams to be a Hugh show well done to the organizers, it would be good to have shows like that hear in Australia. The one thing that amazed me was your purchase of the wind break devise with plastic hinges, I really do not see the worth in it because we all know that plastic hinges especially like the thin strip you have has no longevity it might be good for twelve months or so but it simply wont last mate.

    Your comment about not finding Land Rover seems odd, considering the article at Expedition Portal reckons:
    "Land Rover was once again the largest single exhibitor. " expeditionportal.com/abenteuer-allrad-2016-the-worlds-biggest-off-road-show/
    The stand you found with Matzker - they're very well known Land Rover modifiers, both for overlanding and off road performance. The guy that started it up (Matzker himself) died recently, I think whilst overlanding.

    When i was down in Ayr a few days ago i came across a Camper Van made by Hymer , Hymermobile Starline S Model , Door had a fine wire mesh door cover which allowed the main door to be left open but able to stop insects flying into the camper .. Also had a Satelite Dish fitted on the Roof . Maybe that is something it may/ might interest you . And the 6 wheeled Toyota you mentioned in this footage . How much would it cost to have one built Mobile home format basically all the requirements is all fitted no need for outside tent .. etc

  • @fastandcurious

    I agree with your assessment that European camping tends to be too much focused to the inside/ indoor space. the Aussies are masters of outdoor integration. slide on campers like Trayon and Travellander for pickup flatbeds, and then their love for off-road campers trailers. the most amazing are tracktrailer tvan over patriot campers to full blown hybrid caravans by ultimate Nautilus or BruderX EXP.
    In Europe you see beginnings of this trend even in the mainstream camper van conversion market like spacecamper with their swinging indoor outdoor kitchen for VW T5 and T6. or the British Auto Campers Leisure VA based on the brilliant Ford Custom / Small transit.
    Clever indoor outdoor combinations will be one of the big trends globally in the camper / expedition industries

    Andrew have you considered using American heavy duty pick-ups as a base for you next build? I know it might be inconvenient in terms of parts and maintenance but you would get much higher payload, space and arguably better on road performance from the diesel versions. What do you think?

    2:45 Definitely not a CJ2A! It is either a WW2 Willys MB or Ford GPW, but then again it could (very likely) be a Hotchkiss M201 (License built in France and in use by the French Army right up till the early-2000s).

    I admire the inspiration you bring to over landing. I really do. I however find your bias against land rover a bit much. Let me objectively illustrate. On minute 2:42, you show an old vehicle that we cant buy anymore (1920 I jeep??) and your reaction is "This is nice to look at" on minute 11:22, you see a land rover and your reaction is "I don't get this, showing vehicles you cant buy anymore". I completely understand that you don't like land rovers, but do you have to bash them at any chance you get? You have proven it is possible to like land cruiser without bashing land rovers. This goes down better with your viewers and is proven by the number of viewers on your icarus video. Food for thought...

    I'm genuinely confused by these campers. I can understand a Jeep JKU with a fridge and other amenities (low center of gravity, still nimble, can go topless, etc.). At a certain point of upfitting, wouldn't it just make sense to get an RV?

    • @snowpeaky
      @snowpeaky 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kind of see your point. Except the fact of the lack of 4 wheel drive, low range, and ground clearance (among others) that a RV would be lacking.

    • @johnrobie9694
      @johnrobie9694 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I guess it's a case of the "different strokes for different folks". Some of these things are pretty monstrous.
      I say that, but if I had a family, I'd definitely trade up my Jeep JKUR for a 79 series double cab, or even a Sportsmobile.

    • @johnrobie9694
      @johnrobie9694 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of these things are so big, they're limited to big open trails anyway. Even a Sportsmobile would be too big for the trails in Colorado, let alone these other monsters.
      Like I said, different strokes for different folks. Not hating on them, I just think I'd go about it differently.

    • @gnawershreth

      You wouldn't happen to be American by any chance, would you? :)
      Overlanding seems to mean something completely different to Americans than to the rest of the world. Overlanding for Europeans etc. is a way of traveling. Not a weekend hobby involving driving along tracks.
      The big overlanding trucks *are* essentially RVs but they're RVs that can go pretty much anywhere. Those people will drive from Germany to South Africa, drive around the world, drive around in places like Mongolia where you can have thousands of kilometers without paved roads, without gas stations, without shops etc.
      You also see a clear difference between overland trucks from Europe and the USA. Even if the basic car is the same. Americans will lift theirs, mount massive wheels etc. which you'll very rarely see on European, African etc. overlanding trucks. It just makes the car less safe and worse to drive which isn't really that desirable when you're going to drive thousands of kilometers on shitty bumpy roads with huge holes.
      For whatever reason it's like things change their meaning when they get to the USA. Everywhere else overlanding means traveling *over land*. Off-roading means driving *off the road*, backpacking means traveling around only with your backpack etc. "I went backpacking around South America for a year." and so on.
      In the USA they all got transformed into weekend hobbies it seems. It's completely different to the rest of the world. That's probably where the confusion comes from. Overlanding doesn't always mean what you think it means. :)

    • @jshaw6600
      @jshaw6600 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The word Overlanding in America has been coined by companies that found a new market of people to sell over the top gear too. As an American myself, I can tell you that many people take pride in having the biggest, baddest rig with the coolest gear on the block, no matter how unpractical it may be for what they're actually going to use it for. For some, they're even status symbols. Companies have seen this and have brought all these new Overlanding product from around the world to the USA (which is actually good for), but they're selling it as if it's absolutely necessary for a weekend trip. I'm glad we have options, but I'm not going to get sucked into the gear grab myself.
