@@kellerkind6169 I played it on the Amiga first. I don't think there are any differences between the Amiga and PC versions, and you could definitely speed up the game in the Amiga version. I feel like this game was way ahead of its time with the technology. Which is why it is amazing that it has been remade. The new game looks pretty badass.
The lack of timewarp in the ST and Amiga versions was a big mistake. @@gadgetmind thanks Ian, there have been a few resurrections over the years, but going back to the original was refreshing particularly in the speed of play over Hostile Waters, CC Gaea Mission & CC2 all offer additional functionality and great graphics etc but it’s a double edged sword with their more complex landscapes and resultant pathfinding issues. Ah yes I've heard about the remake, looks very cool. Especially how you can have control on various levels, from the RTS type view to the cockpit of the vehicles. I look forward to playing that.
Funny watching someone play this old game for the first time. What I used to do was get the carrier on the side of the island nearest the command centre and turn around and reverse up to the island, then take it out with cruise missiles. You need to be able to multitask putting your drones out at the back and launching flares to draw any fire. I heard you say you wish they would remake this, well good news, it comes out next month, whether it is as hard as the original, we will see.
Next to the original Dungeon Master, Carrier Command is a pioneer and one of the best Amiga games. I am not a very skillful or dexterous player but I usually beat it in ½ to 1 hour. The game posts island losses and you head in that direction to find the enemy carrier. Use the easy to fly manta for advanced surveillance and they are best used for destroying supply centers. Use the walruses only to plant your flag. Once spotted, the enemy carrier beats a hasty retreat, give immediate chase and the battle quickly ends. The random island placement gives this game excellent replayability.. Thank you for the video
@JimPlaysGames All assembler, about 50,000 lines of it for ST and Amiga, and even more for PC. To make life interesting, we were on 8086 CPUs, so really slow multiplies and divides, and no acceleration of anything. Happy days!
I completed this back in the day. Best strategy was to make as many inroads as possible for supplies so that if the enemy cut you off on one route you had others to back you up. The enemy carrier would end up marooned and would keep 'base' where it could refuel. By this point I had loaded up on as much firepower as I could through supply resources. Enemy carrier is easy to defeat but you need all your mantas in the air as the lift gets damaged very quickly. Remember the enemy defence islands close to its base being a feckin nightmare - at least 6 mantas to crush them. Brilliant game though. Waaaay ahead of its time.
You can manufacture more, the strategic part of the game allows you to set islands as resource gathering, factories or defensive outposts. A support island where all the requested equipment will be send when manufactured. You then go there and ask for resupplies, a supply ship then is sent to you, make sure you are near the island and stopped. :) To land the Manta, click on the left bottom icon while looking at the deck (the opposite icon you click to launch one :p
It was a great game, wonderfully made and polished. Even included a music cassette. I bought the PC version and managed to win the game, the easiest way is to encounter and destroy the enemy carrier from fairly long range. Shoot down his aircraft first, then move in for the kill with your aircraft and walruses, you must also control the island or have a neutral island or it's extra hard.
One of my all tim favs on pc. Countless hours of emersion. Splendid coding and far ahead of its time. Thanks for reviewing, and thanks to Gadgetmind and partner for developing it.
@JimPlaysGames Well, our technology is used in the iPhone, iPad, loads of Android 'phones and a portable that Sony have just announced, so I'm kind of still in games. But to answer your question, yes!
@JimPlaysGames I'm now a "Director of Development" at Imagination Technologies. Sadly, I'm not very hands-on regards coding, and I'm still happier with gates and op codes than high lever fancy stuff, however, I did write a few k lines of Python to get the CC source off those rotting floppies!
@gadgetmind that's cool. As I understand it those kind of platforms are making it possible for small teams or even individuals to become games programmers again, which is great for fostering innovation in these days of countless cloned FPS games. So thanks again for your part in making that possible. As someone who is trying to get back into coding in the hopes of maybe developing games for a living, those new possibilities are encouraging.
@JimPlaysGames I was actually hunting around for videos of the remake that Bohemia are making, and found your video. It really took me back, so thanks! I recently managed to recover the source for CC from some 22 year old floppies. Sadly, while I have everything to rebuild the PC version, the disk routines and a few others bits are missing from the 68000 versions. Still, the PC was better, other than the sound. For more info on the CC remake, see the "Carrier Command" facebook page.
@JimPlaysGames The Bohemia guys do seem to have done a very good job, and I feel that looking at our source would have hindered rather than helped. There were just two of us working on the 16-bit versions, we were both only 25, it was our first game other than on a spectrum, and we'd signed up to a contract that didn't offer much time or (in retrospect) much money. wow Jim!! what you reminded me!!Hours and :hours trying to take over the islands and many amphibians and jets lost lol!!!hope you are fine and well!!was nice talking to you yesterday :)!!Cheers!!
I have just spent many hours watching Carrier Command: Gaea Mission. I had found a previous project where someone was trying to rewrite something more akin to the original, but it shut down when the new, official game was being developed. The new one seems to do well, even though the opening levels look more like an FPS.
@slenkar yeah I would have been lost if I hadn't watched the review/tutorial I mention in the video. That's why I haven't made as many videos of the requested games which are fairly complex, like Midwinter.
@TheUngulable yeah I would have been totally lost if I hadn't found that review/tutorial I mentioned. Back in those days reading the instruction manual was not optional.
I used to play hours and hours and hours on the Amiga 500 playing this. it was cool for only 512K of data on a floppy disc. a entire game on a floppy disc. then after 25 years later a new Carrier Command comes in how people that remembered the classic can try the new one on a Xbox 360 and or PC
Fantastic game, my absolute favorite for the ST. Beside it was also relatively easy to win: conquer the island, pull back the carrier until the island is out of sight, arm all mantas with rockets and wait. Soon the computer will attack the island, rush there at full speed, send all mantas vs the enemy carrier and launch their rockets on him. Ideally that’s it...
@JimPlaysGames I think the "barrier to entry" is now down as low as it was for us in the early 80s. Of course, there is now more competition, but the market is also *much\* bigger. Good luck!
I remember you could win the game within 30 minutes by driving to the top right of the map to find the enemy carrier then drive all your walruses and mantas into the enemy then drive through it with your carrier.
@gadgetmind ah right. Yeah I can imagine such code would be hard to read. Especially since it's very probably in a lower level language than what the current developers are using or are even familiar with. You did an incredible job considering the constraints you were under.
This game was one that made me want an Amiga. Once i owned one, I didn't get Carrier Command for AGES.....and when I finally got Carrier Command, I hardly played it. Odd lol.
@kakabixlis likewise :) Yeah it definitely seems like a game that could eat up a lot of time. How far did you get with it? Did you ever destroy the enemy carrier? I had a go with the DOS version and apart from it having a "time warp" function which is very handy, it was also a lot more difficult. The island sent out planes to attack my carrier immediately. I think I may do more of this game with that version sometime since it was quite a bit more exciting with the enemy actually attacking.

Then restock the carrier. Afterwards unload the mantas and walrus. So now the carrier is overloaded. Now you have broke the game. @gadgetmind wow I never got a comment from a developer of one of the games I've made videos about before. That's so cool! I'm honoured :D No need to apologise for the actions of the publishers. Sounds like an all too familiar story. It's not like you could just release a patch in those days. As I said it is a brilliant game. I had a go with the PC version and the first thing I noticed was the more aggressive AI. It really changed the game. I'll be doing another video about that version.
@kakabixlis yeah a remake would be great. I'd like to see it done by an indie studio rather than a big company though, since I think an indie studio would be better at recapturing the essence of this. Apparently there is a new game being worked on called Carrier Command: Gaea Mission. Who knows if it will be any good though. Good day to you too :)
I haven't read all the comments but there was a remake of this game by Bohemia interactive, the makers of Arma (armed assault) series, somewhere around 2015. #GroveErasmus
Hey, sometimes it can be very easy with the laser cannon! It depends on how close you can come to your aim! If it is next to the shore, you can solve the problem with your laser or your rockets from the carrier.
This was one of my favorites back in 1990. Played the hell out of it. A few years ago I noticed there was a remake of this game. Does anyone know if it was any good?
If you haven't noticed yet, there's another new remake. In a nutshell: Get Carrier Command 2 and leave CC: Gaea Mission where it is, even if it looks more modern despite being a decade old already.
well no never made it as as you stated the time was needed was too much and besides back at the day i was going to school so i didnt had much time to finish this bugger up never :( but i wish they could do it a nice remake with a time accelerator :)!!good to hear from you mate!hope you have a good day so far :)!!
Amazing game for the time and I think would still be enjoyable to play - I have the game but much loved Amiga went years ago. I also liked Elite a space trading game.
I think one of the other major differences with older games like this is the interface. I don't mind the primitive graphics, but the interface systems are often such a pain, and that more than anything keeps me from playing older games so much.
JimPlaysGames I think these types of games up into the 90's were focused on selling to wargamers, the type who would happily sit and read a 200+ page manual before even taking the floppy disc out the box.
@gadgetmind I had a look at the site for Imagination Technologies. Took me a while just to figure out what they actually produce. Seems pretty far removed from game development. Do you miss working on games?
@gadgetmind blimey. I have a hard enough time with high level object oriented programming languages. Just thinking about trying to make a game like this in assembly code makes my head spin. By the way, are you still developing games? If so, what language(s) do you use?
This game was a bitch to pirate. you had to enter a random word from the manual to play it. My mate's Dad's photocopier was the one thing they hadn't thought of. Great classic game even though I never payed for it. Sorry.
The PC version has the ability to speed up time between islands while travelling the Amiga version doesn't? I'm surprised. Playing the game with some knowledge of it would actually help. :) Love your videos though, funny and informing at times.
Yo Jim i checked the trailer for Carrier Command, the concept is the same.. i i am curious about it though...there is apparently a likely 60 percent to be a remake mate..but time will tell!heheh hope you are well :) cheers!!
I really like the game, the only problem: once you found the enemy carrier, it was quite easy to take it down using a bunch of cruse missiles. The to win the game by conquering the islands first.
I always loved to use the quaker bombs in dive bomb style. I liked destroying the carrier, but once that was gone... So was the challenge, it turned into a time sink to capture all the islands. Never did that myself.
I don't remember exactly did i use rockets or bouncing bomb against HQ weak spot, but i found it so easy that it was THE END for game to me. You saw island, and took it over with first well aimed hit. Another way was to locate enemy carrier and butcher it. GAME OVER!
Oh I watched all the seasons. For some reason nowadays when the repeats are on I find myself enjoying DS9 the least out of all the series. I don't remember Duet so I will give that another go.
Everything I need to know I learned from Star Trek XD You didn't like DS9? Did you see much beyond the first season? It started pretty poorly, like most Star Trek series, but it got so good. If you watch one episode of it, watch "Duet". If you don't like it after that, don't bother. Agree with you on Enterprise though.
Just played the demo of the upcoming Carrier Command 2 and it was really good! Came here cause I'm curious about what the original is like.
The original kicked ass!
This game was amazing for its time. I recall guiding missiles with their internal camera to destroy targets. So cool.
Came here after playing Carrier Command 2 in VR. I remember playing this on the Amiga 500, amazing for it's time.
Your comments are valid. It could have used a way to speed up time. However, it was light years ahead of any other similar game of the day.
You could speed up time in CC
OldB0y I was going to comment this. I recall you could.

@@prof_135 In the PC version you could, not in the Atari ST version though (and probably not in the Amiga version either).

Is there anyway I can get this game on my laptop? Desperate to play this game again
try abandonware websites, google "abandonware"
This game was a bitch to pirate. you had to enter a random word from the manual to play it. My mate's Dad's photocopier was the one thing they hadn't thought of. Great classic game even though I never payed for it. Sorry.
The PC version also had a damaged sector (laser dot) protection. I was able to copy it once, I think purely by chance.
The PC version has the ability to speed up time between islands while travelling the Amiga version doesn't? I'm surprised. Playing the game with some knowledge of it would actually help. :) Love your videos though, funny and informing at times.
Luved this game
I probably will when it comes out. Or at least some time after it comes out when the price has gone down a bit.
It was remade today
Yo Jim i checked the trailer for Carrier Command, the concept is the same.. i i am curious about it though...there is apparently a likely 60 percent to be a remake mate..but time will tell!heheh hope you are well :) cheers!!
I loved this game. I was useless at it though.
@Dach101 hehe I've done that sort of thing too when watching someone play a game I know well.
Ah interesting. I wouldn't have expected that.
this and elite were my favourites!
I really like the game,
the only problem: once you found the enemy carrier, it was quite easy to take it down using a bunch of cruse missiles.
The to win the game by conquering the islands first.
I always loved to use the quaker bombs in dive bomb style. I liked destroying the carrier, but once that was gone... So was the challenge, it turned into a time sink to capture all the islands. Never did that myself.
R vLion Also using a manta with a long range transmitter and suicide bombing another island (without moving the carrier) was fun.
Yeah I realised that later. Thanks for the tip though.
Everything I need to know I learned from Star Trek XD
You didn't like DS9? Did you see much beyond the first season? It started pretty poorly, like most Star Trek series, but it got so good. If you watch one episode of it, watch "Duet". If you don't like it after that, don't bother. Agree with you on Enterprise though.
@gadgetmind thanks! :D
Spent HOURS on this game 😻
