      You need to check at ride height. Ur suspension was sprung, car jacked up. Bolt wheels down set off jack on big wood blocks. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WHEEL, NOT THE BEADS, THEY COULD BREAK. Then check for clearance.

    I'm currently rocking 17x8 +35 fronts and 17x9 +35 rears on a 1994 SW20 GT-S hardtop. Assuming stock struts,etc. the best you can fit in the front is 215/40 (45 profile won't fit) although a friend of mine did fit a 225/40 on his by "modifying" the strut perch with a hammer. On rears I'm running 245/40 but there's enough room to go up to a 255 or 265/40 or even wider.. the hardest thing with MR2s is the front strut-to-wheel clearance fitting. Highly recommend you do some homework on coilovers before you buy any as I know that 17x8 +35 don't fit most brand coilovers (only certain ones will clear) however I'm not sure how a 17x7.5 front would go.
    Keep the MR2 updates coming, they're personally my favourite videos on this channel! :)

      @Sky-qd2mf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But what if you go with a +25 offset would you be able to clear wider tires up front and out back? Like a 235/ 275 staggered set up?

    There's no 225 available that will fit properly, most of us use a 215/40R17 in front, but some people use a 235/40R17. You can always hammer that spring perch up a bit on the side if you need tire clearance.

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If i'm going to try and fit a 255 in the rear, I just want to keep the stagger at a minimum :p I'm down for a little suspension modification!

    • @MRIIMKII
      @MRIIMKII 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Roads Untraveled immorality is right. I have a 17x8 +35 front on 215 40r 17 17x9+30 on 255 40r 17 wrapped in yokahama s drive tires. Like he said you can go upto 235 in the front. But with my 255's in the rear it does rub on mine when you hit bad bumps. So coilovers are a must! Mine is on stock suspension. And another thing with my fronts I can turn just fine but when you lock the wheel you will rub the plastic guard inside the wheel well, it really isn't a problem. I follow you on insta so I could send you pictures of mine so you can see.

    225 40 (if you can find a pair) and 255 40 will fit perfect. The "perfect" mr2 wheel size is 17x8 and 17x9 +35 with a 215 and 255....so its gonna be MINT!!!!

  • @GeekoftheRoad
    @GeekoftheRoad 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Totally an MR2 guy here... and you've absolutely identified the limitation on the stock suspension. You'll struggle to get much more profile under the spring mount at the front. 205/40/17 and 215/40/17 are the common sizes on the front and people report issues with the spring mount when going larger. Otherwise, the widths and offsets sound pretty much spot on.
    As it happens I was doing a very similar test fit on my project MR2 (I didn't film it though... I struggle to crank out an episode a month!). My fitment is going to be much tighter though!

    Had a buddy that was running 17x9.5+ 18 front on 235/40r17 with 18x10.5 +15 rear with 275/35r18 and fenderflares. Car looked sick and meaty. Also 350whp, it was so awesome to drive.

    • @Sky-qd2mf
      @Sky-qd2mf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @thatturbosw208

    Those sizes will be perfect man I had 17x8 front with 235 tyres *35 and on the rear had 17x9 255 +38 and it fit perfect
    My current car has 16x7 205 +33 front and 16x8 225 +35 and it sits in the guards more than my old car

  • @gimmethecarkeys

    Have a shop test fit a 235 1st. I do this shit everyday. You will never know until you try. Every tire is different. You could have 3 different brands of 235s and everyone will be a hair different.

  • @Philliplaas
    @Philliplaas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    215/40R17 front and 235/40R17 or 245/40R17 will work well on those wheels.
    I have 17x8+37 and 17x9+29 with 215/40R17 and 245/40R17 with TRD springs and I only rolled up the rear lip. No rubbing with a bit of camber on the rear using stock struts.

    well you're not winning any stance cred but definetly an upgrade over the old ones. And you know what solves strut clearance problems? coilovers of course

    • @josh.nalepa6596
      @josh.nalepa6596 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The down side with mr2s is that you can fit a wider tire with coilovers but at the same time, you decrease the tire height/wall that you can put on lol

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +darius2640 the aim is definitely not stance cred haha. When I'm inside driving on a backroad I couldn't care less what my car looks like on the outside.

    • @jacoblharris
      @jacoblharris 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coilovers reduce the wheel options in the front, 8" wide wheels won't fit unless they're +30mm offset or lower.

  • @TrinomCZ
    @TrinomCZ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I like both - stock ones for the propper 90s look and the new one for modern sleek look. However I really don't like the wheel color. Black tyre on black rim looks horrible. Paint them white and it would be great.
    BTW, what's the weight difference? I'm little worried, that the car might be slower on the new wheels because of the wheel inertia.

    I run 225/40 245/40
    You may get induce understeer by doing a 225/255 setup. But with non coilovers in the front the biggest you can go is 225/40 235 will hit the strut.

  • @carsond2674
    @carsond2674 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    215/40 and 235/40 are the right sizes for this setup, my car has 17x7.5 +41 and 17x8.5 +41 and they clear perfectly. Just not flush enough to the fenders for my taste though.

    at that size I'd rather go 215/40/17 and 245/40/17. it's a little less tire bulge than stock but it's more worry free with rubbing. Sdrives are also the way to go for a daily driver

    I would love some feedback I want to go with 235/40/17 up front and 275/40/17 on the rear. Its that possible without rubbing or rolling fenders? If so what offset should I go with to achieve this set up or as close to it as possible? Also I am on coilovers. Thanks

In the past, when channels such as CarThrottle have made MR2 videos, Alex has emailed us asking if it was cool if they use a few of our clips. We said yes of course, in return they gave us credit and that's all. Unfortunately Donut media never reached out to us and decided to use our clips without asking.

    Why always do jokes about being Mexico? Is because the police isn't effective? :'v (Regards from Mexico hahahahaha)

    • @pmodd
      @pmodd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Palhe It has nothing to do with the Police in Mexico. People refer to the wheels poking out past the guards as being "Mexican fitment" because in America, the only time you ever see cars with wheels that stick out way past the guards, it's on cars owned by Mexicans. For some reason that ethnic demographic really likes the look, hence the joke.
      The other joke "filmed in Mexico" is a comment made on car Internet videos to avoid the video being used as evidence in a US court. I don't know how effective it actually is, but the idea is that the Police would have to *prove* that the illegal driving didn't occur in Mexico, where the US/Canadian road rules don't apply nor does the court have any jurisdiction.
