  • Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I think wanting your own little goat pen is like the gardeners who manage the gardens on large English estates and go home to their cottages where they have roses rambling up the cottage walls, sweet peas climbing fences and scattered hollyhocks swaying in the breeze. The Gardner’s love what they are doing and find gardening on a private , carefree scale restful and rejuvenating.......enjoy your little goat oasis Jess🙂

Having a partner that supports your dreams is so wonderful. I have talked for years about getting chickens because I love them and we could use the eggs. Then one day my husband decided that we should also do turkeys and I thought it would be productive to do geese. Then one day I asked him if I should give up on the chicken idea due to the other types of birds being more productive. He said no, because my enjoyment of what we are doing is important. It made me feel so loved. Can't wait to see your new goats!

Oh my gosh, Jess. I feel so validated.
These last 4 years have been so hard for our family. So much to surmount and overcome. And I'm drained and overwhelmed, and I feel so inept.
We've owned our land for 3 years. We've set one pre-built shed but not managed to run electricity to it. We've dug a footer trench for the combination wellhouse and storm shelter. It's sat there through so many storms that it needs redigging and squaring up before we pour concrete. Three years,, and that's all we have to show for it! We're still debating on where to put the house!
I ran into an old friend in Aldi yesterday. She said, Is your farm still a work in progress? I said, Well, it's a work; I don't know about the progress.
I literally sobbed during this video. I watch other channels and feel like "normal" people would roll their eyes at the glacial speed that we cannot seem to get away from. You are the first person that has made me feel better about this. Thank you.

      Hey Jess,
Have you considered sheep milk? It has a very mild taste like cows milk but is usually tolerated by those with lactose intolerance. If you are getting a ram for you sheep it may be worth exploring. We have been milking one of our meat sheep as a trial.

Life has its seasons, and the season for goats has come around again. I’m so happy you are in a place where you are less overwhelmed. Moving, getting a new house set up, and starting a much larger farm are all individually overwhelming. Doing all of that with health issues is just impossible. You were wise to re-home the goats when you did. Now that things have settled, and you are healthier, it makes perfect sense to return to raising goats. I’m glad to hear you can tolerate goat’s milk. That alone is a good enough reason for keeping a small herd!

I'm not surprised you feel this way about your garden. I enjoy creating content about gardening and cooking but there is something healing that happens when you do those things disconnected from a phone, laptop, what have you. I breathe deeper, pray and just enjoy. But, sharing what I'm doing brings me joy too. It's all a balance and I love that you're acknowledging your struggle. Hope the goats bring you a sense of connection and joy ❤

I am now an old mom of adults for years -I learned that it's important to do things for you that's just you! Something that fits into who you - that fills your heart - that raises your sole. Your well of who you are needs to be filled by you on a regular basis. you can only give to others when you heart is filled by you for you.

I agree. I think it is not just farms or homesteads, either. I think it is every person - people who do not have their own thing or their own space in their homes I think start to feel left out or removed from their house or families. Everybody needs their own thing, their own time, their own space. It can be something small - a bath ritual, a gaming ritual - and maybe just once a week or so, but definitely everybody needs something that is theirs to calm their mind and spirit.

Hi Ms. Jessica. As we age (gracefully) we also age ideologically. When my wife and I built our home we needed 4 bedrooms. ( four kids, 2 adults.) After Danielle lost her sight and the kids were already older we changed to 3 bedrooms and a beautiful, emergency out, patio, just in case of a fire and because Danielle was blind, she could find her way outside and to a safe place'. Our visions change and grow. God only knows what the future holds for our dreams. As a side note, I always loved your goats. btw: I was raised on goat's milk because I was allergic to all the other milks back in 1954, who knew? God bless your family.

I love this and can relate SO much! I can relate to this so much. I gave up a lot when we had our 3rd baby two years ago because I just didn't have the bandwidth. We still have a few of our goats, but haven't bred or milked them in two years. The other day while doing chores I realized how much I miss that "me time" I get with my goats when I milk. It's so meditative. I talked with my husband and we decided to breed a couple of our girls so I can go back to milking this spring. I'm so excited! I can't wait to see you guys build the infrastructure and get your goats when you're ready. ❤❤

I started with 12 baby chicks years ago and now I have about 50 plus 8 guineas. We have bottle calves almost every year. I get what you mean about disconnected. I liked having 12 chickens because I knew which was which and were more like pets. I don’t help with cattle except the occasional twin or orphan. It’s nice to have your own piece of the farm! Almost like that walk in the garden with a cup of coffee.

You know what thought kept occurring to me listening to last week's podcast? How much I felt you missed your sweet little pink garden gate. This "news" you're sharing today is really an extension of that podcast, Jess. You ARE "a garden enclosed." You NEED to place a chair in it to rest and survey that protected lovely place within. A sanctuary to birth new dreams.
Just like a bustling restaurant, the front of the house is where all the action, merchandising and business takes place. But the backyard is for respite. It's for hanging clothes on a line. It's for sitting with a cuppa, your journal and listening for the still small voice among the rustling leaves and morning bird song. I'm glad for you to see that sweet personal dream resurrected in the very midst of the much bigger corporate dream. May it richly bless you. ❤

I think you just identified for me what has endeared myself to our landscape even more this year: just for me elements. Thank you Jess! A gorgeous stone pot for flowers at the edge of a new fruit guild? Fall flower decor outside on a patio I can see from our kitchen sink (with dried flora from our garden)? Adding flowers to raised garden beds, more than needed for companion purposes? A whimsically painted birdhouse and beads dangling from macrame plant hangers? Bringing home 2 gorgeous stone pots from a nursery in the same area as a medical trip? God is so good and I am grateful for leading me to these touchpoints from Him, just for me. Thank you my Lord Jesus!

I couldnt even go into our barn without the heavy sadness. 10 years later and me in my 50s my hubby purchased 4 nigerian dwarf doe babies for my birthday. Im now in my 60s and I love their small size and your video helped me fall in love with them all over again. Hey Jess, I totally get how you can miss the trees for the forest. I always wanted to have a small farm! After not having it for most of my life (46 years) I got it! But as I was working full time to support our family and keep our insurance benefits I focused on just getting the family settled! Time got away from me and life did too! Recently I found myself looking around and saying hey wait, is it too late at almost 65? My plate is more full than ever! So I have laid it before the Lord and asked Him to go before all the days of my life! And I have not given up my dream and am thankful for the Tasha Tudor’s in my life that still sprinkle their romantic lives and wisdom my way so that I still know it is possible, Lord willing! Thanks for the sprinkle! 😉💖

I don't know the science behind it but I do know that a lot of people who can't drink cow's milk can tolerate goat milk. My Mama was born premature in 1950 when babies didn't have as great a chance for survival as they do now. I come from a very long line of farmers and when the doctors told my Grandparents and great grandparents that my Mom wouldn't survive my Great Grandfather refuse to give up and took her home and fed her goats milk. Not only did she live (obviously :) but she thrived and became a very robust and healthy child. I'm so glad you're able to enjoy dairy again and I'm so excited for you to have goats again. I absolutely adore mine!

It's always good to have something that is just for you! I find myself letting my dream slip away, but have to realize things take time to build and when the time is right I will have my dream! We were going to try and build everything at one time, but started realizing it could get overwhelming, so we slowed down and are making sure we have everything in a good place and have the knowledge before we move on to the next thing.

Squealing with excitement right now as I’m getting ready for work!! I found your videos before I got my goats 3 years ago while I was researching how to care for them. Before I knew it I am chasing after the homesteading dream because you have greatly inspired me with both your lifestyle and your faith. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! My goats are my babies and I milked them for the first time this year! I am so excited for you and I cannot wait to follow along this journey. ❤

It felt so validating to see another mom going through the balance challenge for self, family, and community. (p.s. sorry about the weird name stamp. I haven’t figured out what’s causing it. I have been one of your silent cheerleaders for years now. We bought our San Diego ranch in 2014 and you have been such a beacon of light and wisdom! This year I whittled down my horse boarding and made room for 4 milk Ewes. I bought them as lambs and am brand new to dairy animals. I am looking forward to your content on the facility and milking, I am a girl that loves details! Thank You for all the sacrifices and dedication to your calling to educate. I am so thankful for you!

I think it's a great idea to keep something small just for you! I'm sure it is difficult to feel connected to everything on the farm when it is expanding so rapidly. I really appreciate that you do your best to show realistic timelines and decisions foe us 5o understand more. Nobody here will complain about some more goat content, haha.
I totally understand that earthy, alive, greenhouse smell. One of the best smells there is. Thanks for sharing! I always love hearing your perspective. Until next time!

I think what you're feeling is like many successful people who've climbed the ladder and reached the top, so to speak, and then realize they miss why doing the actual thing that was the reason why they got into thatvline of work or started that business. You go girl...and get those goats, if that's what you need to do to feel "rooted" again! 😊❤🤗

I literally Laughed Out Loud with joy at you getting goats again!! So many homesteaders I follow have a thing against goats.
Joel says use them to clear brush then get them off your farm asap
Justin calls them “ devil eyes”
Even Shawn Dougherty made a comment about them at HOA.
Yes, my goats drive me insane sometimes, but they still have value on the homestead. I look forward to learn to make soap with you!

😂 I’ve had to eat my words many a time, but I’m sure everyone’s hearts jumped a beat of joy to think you could have a spotted black/white baby goat as a birthday present. I’ve recently had 4 pets pass (age related illnesses) and still have a number of animals on the homestead, but with all I do I know that God has something planned in the future. I’m doing the kitchen stuff, herbalism stuff, working full time, gardening year round, homestead barn critters, but what’s on the plan for 2024 is the anticipation. My husband and I are heading out on a 4 day road trip and I can’t help but feel like I should bring a carrier. 😂

I dont know how you can bring me to tears so easily, just casually talking to everyone. I find myself feeling so much of my younger self in so much of the things you say, only you've done life on a much bigger, wonderfully grandiose scale than I have, which is just awesome. Watching your videos the past several years has helped me through some really tough times. That being said, I am familiar with putting everyone else before yourself and I know its done unselfishly and with much love for those people. So, good for you taking something just for you! Its good for your soul and I dont know of many people who deserve that more than you do. Bless yourself. You bless so many people with so much of yourself, its your turn. ❤❤❤

Totally get what you are saying. It's great that you are tolerating the goat's milk - you will be caring for both your physical and mental/emotional health with the goats, and that is important. It is possible to have more than one vision at a time and it is ok for them to evolve as you go along in your journey. I love that you are doing all this research - that is me as well which can sometimes lead to analysis paralysis, but has also allowed me to avoid what would have been some pretty big mistakes.

Well Jess, I know you didn't ask, but you have my permission and heartfelt blessing. I think this will be good for you.🐐 It's been a while but If I remember right we did keep our bucks with the rams. We had Angora goats and Shetland sheep so both were smaller breeds and similar in size.

So happy for you! I can't wait! I am going through the same thought process with chickens. We have under a half acre and 2 large crazy (non-farm) dogs. We are not handy people and don't have the woodworking tools to be handy. But there is a farm not too far (3 hours) away that builds movable coops. I trying to see what that would look like and how to go about it on my suburban land. Reading your homesteading book I downloaded from the library to get me started. Thank you for all the inspiration. I can do it! 😅

This is one of my favorite videos in almost two years. I'm so happy you're going to go back to something small just for you. I have felt a little disconnected from some of the content because it's so much bigger than my own dreams. I had just gotten my goats when you stopped talking about yours, and as much as I LOVE your beautiful farm, and the Jerseys, I miss the smaller scale videos from a couple of years ago. Can't wait to see how this comes together for you. I'm throwing in my vote for LaManchas, because I LOVE them so much. Looking forward to seeing what you decide on, and hearing your decision making process.

Oh my gosh, I needed this video today. My little heart is doing a happy dance right now. I had a rough day here on my little farm. Some hard decisions have to be made. I want goats so very much. One day God will give me my dream. Meantime I am in the classroom learning. No better teacher than you. God created all kinds of seasons. Sometimes its hard to wait for that season, but when its right he will plant that seed in our hearts and help us nurture it into his glory in his time. if that makes sense. Thank you Jess and Miah for who you two are. Real honest loving nurturing God loving young couple. By the way I loved the day date picture that popped up on FB today. I was twice blessed today by you two.
