      He had a very tragic end. Obviously, he had been suffering from depression and started to drink quite heavily. His marriage had ended and it appears he lost the will to sing. I doubt he wanted to continue - otherwise, why would he be playing with guns at his expense??

    For me Jerry Hadley one of the best American tenor, together with with Neil Shicoff and Richard Tucker. Just FANTASTICO!.

      @arnoldamaral7406 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Carlos Montane Neil shicoff struggle with the top voice he did La Boheme with Cotrubas at Covent Garden 1981 I believe a transposed the Aria got a beautiful voice but did not have the high C'S yet he had a good career in Europe especially. Tales of Hoffmann La Boheme Etc

      Great list, Tucker is bigger voice, not pure lyric anymore, Jerry is the most under rated,

    • @billobrien5118
      @billobrien5118 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was not a Shicoff fan - heard in a few operas where there was no beauty or persuasive sound. There was much acid in his voice and also annoying wobble. He had a love affair with himself but when it came time for him to sing - he started canceling performances and also with Teresa Stratas became known as unreliable.

    _After listening to this video again -- 10 months later -- I am even more thankful for this exposure to these great singers._
    _I'm not really much of a fan of verismo opera, but MAN ! I never heard "Pagliacci" sung in the way of Peter Lindroos -- unexaggerated / flawlessly performed as no one else I have ever heard. It is so free of over-the-top Pagliacci-excessive singing as you hear from "great" tenors AND you wonder why they put their voices through such straining expressions for verismo opera which is not worth sacrificing great operatic voices, in my opinion._
    _Lindroos takes the aria to bel canto-style delivery :: breath-control / no excessive sobbing / clarity of the sound / his upper notes were powerful & ringingly-delivered to that mirror & perfect "cut-offs"._
    _Giuseppe Sabbatini's vocal technique is the highest standard. After hearing him sing ( "Puritani" ) OR anything else, it's hard to go back to singers not on his level of perfect skills in "general" singing ; high notes & clean breaks w / the last word ; a swimmer's breath-control ; a beautiful sound & how many singers ( tenors ) can play the Double-Bass ?_
    _We should give singers every possible _*_Break,_*_ as they give so much in return !_

      By what I had heard, she wasn't so great. They had regular shouting matches behind the stage and she was more jealous and controlling that everything and quite bossy... For instance: At one time, during a rehearsal shortly before the performance, he was overly high strung and unhappy with the position of the lighting on stage and protested, but the director refused to change it. Instead of using intelligence and diplomacy, calming him down gently and finding a solution for everybody in that situation (that is what I would have done ) ,she demanded simply: "Franco, w e leave." In that tone. She had him rather break a contract with the opera house and disappoint his fans that convincing him to a compromise. And she must have thought him not being capable to think and to stand up for himself. That says everything, I think.... This scene was witnessed by the famous singer Christa Ludwig, who was rehearsing with Corelli. When she told that episode to the interviewer, her face said it all. And I must admit I think the same...

I was saddened by his tragic ending. Then I saw Alessandra Marc perform twice and actually got to meet her. I have a recording of Jerry Hadley singing 'Au Fond du Temple Saint' with Thomas Hampson - his French diction was impeccable. He is much missed. I wish I had seen him live.

    Troppo spesso, invece, ho visto criticato Silvano Carroli. Certo, non è mai stato Bastianini o Protti, siamo lontani anni luce. Ma preferire addirittura uno Hvorostovsky a lui... mi è sempre sembrato davvero esagerato!

    I was fortunate enough to sing in the chorus of Barber of Seville many years ago with the Lake George Opera Company when Jerry Hadley sang the tenor lead in Barber of Seville. His career was just getting solidly started but his talent shone brightly even at such a young age. And the nicest, friendliest, most down-to-earth guy you'd ever want to know. A huge loss. It still moves me.

    Thanks so much for this compilation. Ratings ususally imply a negation of anything not on the first level. Few singers are luck to have the right connections for the duration of their careers to garner the top tier of recognition, The artists in your video however, deliver such incredible art that no objective marketing label of "the best" should be allowed to tarnish their contributions to classical vocal art that demands more than human beings can sometimes give. Life and all its complications are still there for the artists. I am grateful for every stellar performance that transcends the hurdles. I would pay to hear any of them today. Bravi Tutti!

      Because in a world of non singers, who have no inkling of an idea how hard it is to be a proper Operatic tenor, no one understands us, and just how stressful it is. Hell not even other singers understand because they themselves are to preoccupied dealing with their own suffering.

    Aragall secondo me ha una voce stupenda e canta da Dio. Non so se ai suoi tempi sia stato effettivamente sottostimato, ma certamente, per quanto si può capire dalle sue registrazioni, meritava di non esserlo. Spero che il tempo gli renderà pieno merito. Molte grazie AfroPoli per l'ennesima raccolta di perle.

    • @alessandroberchielli8472
      @alessandroberchielli8472 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diciamo che all'epoca non erano sottostimati ma sono stati dimenticati in fretta, Aragall una voce meravigliosa ha comunque cantato per una ventina d'anni ed in Spagna è tutt'ora un mito come lo è un altro grande tenore che risponde al nome di Pedro Lavirgen, Jerry Hadley fu Rodolfo con Bernstein e West Side story come appunto Afro Poli ci ricorda, tanti sono passati inosservati perché anche negli anni 80 erano tanti e bravi, Wimberg, Johansson, Bartolini, Mauro, McCauley, Lima, Dominguez, Garaventa, Francesconi, Dvorsky etc solo tra i tenori.....comunque tutti hanno fatto carriere abbastanza lunghe cosa che adesso i contemporanei non faranno perché cantano tutti al di sopra delle loro possibilità...

    • @liricamente7549
      @liricamente7549 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fa piacere sapere che in carriera abbia raccolto i meritati consensi, ed è un peccato che artisti di questo calibro non vengano oggi internazionalmente ricordati come credo si dovrebbe, specialmente in Italia. Pare che i concetti di patrimonio culturale e tradizione artistica non siano importanti per il pensiero imperante.
      Credo che esistano ancora molte belle voci, ma purtroppo diversi cantati anche dotati decidano di rischiare, cantando troppo presto ruoli più grandi delle loro voce, perché se non si canta Verdi e Puccini si sparisce (ingiustamente credo ) dal radar di molti teatri e da quello del pubblico. Questo penso valga soprattutto per i tenori, ma non solo. Effettivamente gli esiti artistici di questi frettolosi esperimenti di sopravvivenza vocale a volte secondo me sono desolanti, con direttori obbligati ad insordiate l'orchestra e rallentarla/accelerarla per aiutare la vocina kamikaze di turno

      @@liricamente7549 sono pienamente in accordo con il tuo pensiero, purtroppo non è ne più e ne meno lo specchio della decadenza culturale del nostro paese, parafrasando un grande personaggio del passato anche quando la politica entra nella cultura essa esce dalla finestra...sovrintendenti e direttori artistici messi li a nomina e non per meriti, solo per fare i conti del bilancio senza la minima capacità artistica..che si appoggiano alle agenzie "offerta cast completo + nome di grido", la maggior parte dell'est europa così si riempie anche il teatro, ma solo per il primo atto perché una volta che hanno fatto sfoggio della propria ricchezza gli spettatori se ne vanno...tornando ad Aragall, ho avuto la fortuna di vederlo e ascoltarlo diverse volte, uno dei migliori in assoluto e sicuramente il timbro di voce tenorile più bello esistito nella lirica

      Treyson Sherratt It’s a polemic, one-sided and dogmatic attempt to promote a certain technique. The channel owner tries to impress young singers with technical jargon and easy solutions IMO. The jargon won’t help and the “solutions” won’t get them anywhere. I pity those who believe in that quack.

    Jerry Hadley was noy underrated or unappreciated. For one thing, he was Leonard Bernstein's favorite tenor. Further, he was leading tenor of his time until he suffered the loss of his voice perhaps due to unfortunate technique choices or simply the hazards of time or perhaps the emotional blow of his divorce. His suicide was a tragedy beyond bearing.

      It's ironic that once he started singing the heavier lyrical repertoire at the behest of Sutherland and her husband, he lost vocal coordination. By the time the late 90's and mid-2000's, he was working on his voice again.
