I live in Scotland and the only international job Matt Williams ever had was with Scotland. It is on record he is the worst coach Scotland has ever had.
I am a Kiwi from New Zealand and it's an absolute Masterstroke. Good on the Boks and Rassie for their vision. Tell Willams to put a sock in it. He's an absolute clown / sooky bubba. Go the Boks.
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to police (what seems) to be what Williams is advocating! Would have to have a clock-watch to measure the times between substitutions and then also have to make sure that a player that is called a back on the team list is not in reality a forward. A coach selects substitutes based on the make-up of the team and in order to reduce the risk of injury amongst other things. If the coach believes there are enough versatile backs (like Kolbe playing wing and scrumhalf, etc) then he may favor forwards in his bench selection. Also, as far as I am aware, the Bok wings often get little ball time in a match compared to the forwards, so the forwards would seem to be more at risk of injury and fatique.
As an Aussie who cares. They are not breaking the rules. It’s a safety issue if they are putting backs into scrums but they are not doing that. I think it’s a good strategy and opposition coaches need to look at the Boks bench and copy them. Matt’s just old and grumpy

No they don’t but safety should always be a concern in all sports. The discussion should be had and if it seems that the 6-2 7-1 is a ok then thats the way forward. I think the truth regarding how good it is, last week SA put on 6 forwards and Ireland put 3 tries in against SA so the bomb squad made no difference to the score etc. they did the same against Ireland at the World Cup and it made no difference. In fact SA have not scored more points in almost all their tier 1 games they tried this tactic , it’s almost a fake tactic and SAs refuse to actually analyze the effect of the bomb squad. I think it will die out as a tactic and particularly when NZ get back to regularly beating the springboks 😂
It hasn’t worked for SA either, in games they used the Bomb squad overall teams have scored more against them than they have against them. Last Saturday Ireland put 3 tries away against SA in the World Cup Bomb squad was used against Ireland and they beat SA, so you can see it hasn’t worked against Ireland .
First, the substitution laws were changed because the Springbok scrum was too strong and the way the Ausies combated it during the 1999 World Cup was to deplete their front rowers and force non-contested scrums. The South Africans adapted and worked how to use the law changes to their advantage. Then after the 2007 World Cup, the laws changed again because the Springboks dominated the line outs and scrums. Now, they want the laws to change again because international teams cannot cope for 80 minutes doing the basics of rugby right. The basics of rugby are the set pieces, kick offs and kick ins, scrums and line outs. Any team that dominate the set pieces will win any game, this is the root principle of rugby.
To be fair, Williams doesn't blame Razzie or SA, think its fair enough to have a different opinion, the current rules favour SA due to their huge numbers of players available, but rules are changed and amended all the time.

A lot of teams see their first XV as their best and their bench as second best. Rassie has completely changed that, and has put a lot of value in versatile players who can cover multiple positions

Pronounced Skulk, as in skulking. I think it's fine, every team could utilise bomb squad tactics too. It works for us because each pack of forwards is trained as a unit. Nothing stops other teams from doing the same.
If there are 2 rugby pundits that i am G@tvol of it is Williams and Kirwan. They both are bleating about the rules not because there is something wrong with the rules but because it does not suit there current style of play and talent pool. I will guarantee anyone that if the rugby boot was on the other foot they would be smiling from ear to ear. There are other countries with bigger men, where forwards run faster than back line players. Potentially they can dominate rugby. The All Blacks dominated world rugby a few years ago. You do the best you can with what you have, and be creative to develop in the areas you need to. The Springbok wings are some of the smallest men on the field, but they outplay their bigger opponents.

I think this could go either way, if WR rugby decide that a blood sport like Calcio Storico would bring more revenue to rugby they might stick with the current rules, if however they are forced through player litigation and have a desire to return to more traditional values, then rules will be changed. Discrimination against backs? How so? When I played rugby I hated to be replaced even when I played my usual horrible game. In a 7-1 or 6-2 or 5-3 split the majority of back are guaranteed more game time than the forwards. That is not discrimination, it is preferential!!!!

We should consider ourselves rather fortunate to have him as a pundit is our sport of Rugby.
