For those who don't know, he arrived in 2002 with almost zero English. For a 22 year old adult from China to become fluent and minimize his accent enough to make a coherent 15 minute speech with humor and humility is the most impressive thing he's done in his career. I spent 9 years in China as an American Born Chinese and can't match 25% of the vocabulary he has mastered. Much respect, Yao.
Yep too much respect for Yao for me :) He is a legend that changed our lives in so many ways. I don't meet many pro althetes that are humble, especially not like Yao
I COMPLETELY AGREE!! I'm PROUD of Yao and SO HAPPY for him too!!
@Connor G am sure you meant well. but it is not easy to learn a new language that is fundamentally different to yours - especially as an adult. Folks who have lived in Australia for 40 years have strong unintelligible accents.
@Connor G says the guy who only speaks english looool
it's very surprising how good he is actually in English lmao
Yao probably dealt with more racism than any other modern athlete
GABOS Stealing comments for likes smh
GABOS you stole that
LP Luna Let that man vent...at least it's a original comment and not stolen from the comment section of another Ming video. 😂😂😂
@Connor G bro who hurt u lmao
Yo I’m just here cause I pulled Yao’s pink diamond in 2k
This was a no brainer. Yao Ming easily a first ballot Hall of famer. He is a legend at Center. Hard to find a great big man like him.
If Yao was an ABC he would never became greatest.
Carlos Reghis True. But being a Chinese is exactly what made him Yao and HOF worthy.
No. They did this to cater to the big money over in China.
Because I being in the hall of fame also includes your impact off the court, and yao did that.
@@user-pg1ro9gk9q can't forget what yao did over China before he came definitely HOF
his voice kinda reminds me of obama
Now I know... that I'm a Hall of Famer
dont compare this legend to that fraud
@@MrMuaythai84 Obama never was a fraud.
@@jamylhurtado yea he was pp in my country never greeted him when he came actually his asia tour was an embarrassment to the usa. no country greeted him. usually when leaders or kings or someone in higher power come they get the red carpet with people and soldier saluting them. @@MrMuaythai84 still haven't explained how he is a fraud. You just explained how people don't like him, but here in U.S.A everyone loves him.

@AR 777 i hope you're having a great day :)

That AI joke was perfect lol
Raiception 😂😂😂
The delivery was just a smidget off. It needed a little more practice.
M.H. L. This the real hidden gem
Yea I laughed in class, fuck me
Raiception what time
Many don’t realise his impact on the NBA. Because of him he basically converted a whole nation which had nearly no relation to the United states, into a country of which over 50% of views to the NBA come from there. He is the reason over half the Chinese NBA fans love the rockets and all these mega superstars like Shaq, kobe and LeBron. On top of that when he came to the states he spoke zero english, so for him to than get up 15 years later and speak fluent english which encompasses passion, emotion, humour and humility, shows to me the true character he really is. He battled with racism, hate and being a kid all alone in a business where many Chinese athletes were unheard of. This 15 minute speech alone made me have more respect for him than his whole playing career, just because it shows the true side to Yao.
Thankyou Yao Ming!
Well said
choomah
PackerNZ big fuckin leeezzzz mate
The thing is that he had no other choice. The Chinese Communist government bred him.
Don't feel bad, I didn't know either and I was a fairly big NBA fan back then....
Interesting to hear a Chinese citizen speaking in African American intonation. Really shows how different cultures can come together. Yao spoke really well too
"Thanks brother" - Yao
Yeah he learned from fellow basketball players he spoke no English when he started.
That's that H-Town slang baby that's how we do down here.
Yao got jokes for days roasting everybody. No wonder he's a meme
He is a meme because people are just racist. Nothing more. Like you for example.

NBA Skyline he is now a man with great sense of humor. and Most important thing I did was trying to blend in. the way he talks , the way he expressed his gratitude to the coaches, family, other peers, makes him not only humble but also respectful.
Even his daughter wasn’t spared from his slew of jokes! 😂
Lies, she is not trapped at home bc of soccer, she is trapped at home learning advanced calculus
chordia919 Let’s be real, that strict Asian parent stereotype only applies when the family is poor/middle class. Yao’s kid is set no matter what she does lol
@@jameslin5623 right these Asian jokes are mostly based on the middle class families
chordia919 when can people learn to stop stereotyping other people?
@@willyang4487 I am from a middle class family and suffering from that.
So could you please just call my parents and tell them it's just a stereotype and they don't have to act like that, so hard?
The saddest thing about Yao's career is that he had to end it right after his best season, when he was peaking, going on in his prime. He was averaging 25 and had an epic series with the Lakers and then he never got it back after that injury. If only he had like 3-4 good seasons with a better team.
he woulda probably won a chip in 09 tbh. I'm a Kobe fan but that rockets team without yao and tmac went to 7 games.
True but on the other hand retire after your best season makes you more memorable as a player
@@Pipoy_99 Yes Scola and company had a lot of fight in em.
Him being as big as he was, plus being overworked in between NBA seasons and Chinese National Team duties, it's not surprising that his body gave up on him. It's a shame, really. His skill is HoF worthy, and he would've had some rings to his collection.
@@amplesstratleholm7609 Even as a Chinese dude, I'm pretty f**king annoyed how they made him play in those dumb Chinese national games. Like let's be for real... China doesn't have a chance at the Olympics or Worlds. How about we keep our global star athlete healthy so he can have a long healthy career that'll bring China more recognition than anything else....
Man.. I would have loved to see another 4-5 seasons from Yao. He definitely would have been a top 8 all time center...
Because of Yao, many Chinese becomes Rockets fans. I am among them. Since the main color of Rockets is red, which is the same like China's flag. We were also kidding and saying that Rockets is team of China in NBA. Hope some day I will be in Toyota Centre and watch a game with Houston people.

Yao is probably in the top 3 of most influential NBA players of all time. Not the greatest in skill, but definitely one of the greatest humans to ever touch a court. The way he handled the amount of hate he got coming into the NBA was amazing. He didnt get mad and become a villan on the court, he didnt whine about it and blame everyone else for his mistakes, and he treated people who were mean to him with the same amount of respect as anyone else he knew. A truly incredible human being. I hope his height doesnt affect his health, i hope he sticks around for a long time.
Why was he hated so much because he was Chinese?
@@deeznutz8320 yeah because he came from an asian leauge which black basketball players looked at pretty much as players not good enough to be in the NBA. When Yao came over they thought the only reason he made it to the NBA was because of his size and thought he would never last against "real basketball players"
Not gonna lie dawg, “not the greatest in skill” was a clown statement
Michael Scatt amongst center position players, no doubt he was one of the greatest on skill levels. Let’s not be ignorant about it
Not the greatest in skill?
If he had another 4-5 seasons, I'm 100% sure he would make it to top 5-10 centers of all time.
He didn't play long enough. But if he played another 4-5 seasons at the same level, he easily gets in top 10. Top 5 if he won a ring or two.
Name another big man who could play like a BIG MAN in the post with the post moves, hooks, turnaround jumpers, and just back you up and dunk over you, shot 90% from the FT line, and block the f**k out of the entire league, and lastly, can hold Shaq and make Big Ben look like a child.
“I’m a Texan and Houston rockets for life” 🤘🤘
He deserves all the respect 'cause he actually is one of the most incredible centres. He had overcome so many obstacles like language and living in abroad far away from his home

He's great and handsome personality forever in basketball-playing sphere. His speech is so impressive to somebody who desires to be a basketball player.
Yao's speech is so underrated, he sectioned his speech so well, and touched on all the major areas in a very systematic manner, from his beginnings to his Rockets days, mentioning his parents, the Chinese players who paved the wag, his Sharks days, the personnel who helped him, his teammates, his coaches along the way!
I'm sure I missed some parts out too, thank you Yao

He`s actually known to be very loyal to his wife.
His first few days in Houston had to be extremely difficult. I remember being in the Best Buy on I-10 and Bunker Hill shopping for cd's and in walks a man larger than anyone myself or anyone had ever seen. I could see him over everything else in the store and seriously was like the parting of the Red Sea. I walked over to him and said something stupid like "glad to have you in Houston" and he replied "thank you very much". I shook his hand and it was the size of a Volkswagen! He was with his translator who was extremely polite and I can't remember what I said after shaking hands with him but I'm sure it was something cheesy but Yao didn't look away or anything. Very polite and a true gentleman!
He really did so much for Houston.....embracing everyone along with everything this amazing city has to offer!
