The parents portrayal has always been really interesting to me. We get in this movie the feeling that they are super neglectful, but I don't actually think they are. the Problem is that we see the story through Carolines Teenage eyes. But there are envitonmental hints that something is going on behind the scenes that Coraline either doesn't know or only vaguely understands: 1. The moms Brace. It seems like she recently had a decently major accident, and going by American insurances... that'll mean debt. 2. They just moved seemingly pretty apribtly, Maybe they could not afford the place they were living at before. While the house they live in now is big, it is also pretty old and isolated, so it may actually be fairly cheap. 3. We see that Coraline actually cares for her parents deeply and that she _does_ rely on them when things are getting hairy. This implies that she has had the experience of her Parents being there for her if need be. 4. The mom sais something about a Catalogue deadline, implying that this stressed out air right now is a temporary thing because it is crunchtime before this needs to get to a publisher at a certain date. All in all, I think this paints a picture of Parents who aren't terrible, but are right now financially struggeling and under physical and emotional stress because if they already have financial problems, they _need_ to get this catalogue in before deadline or their srewed, which does affect of course their daughter too. This may also explain why Coralines Mom refused the Gloves. She got them for Coraline _after_ the Catalogue had gone to the publisher, probably in the knowledge that they are now a bit more financially stable, so that she could give Coraline something a bit more expensive.

I always took the neglect from Coralines' parents in that they were both working on that gardening catalog for the same job (they must be a working duo) and must of had a very short deadline to get it done, given how aggravated the Mom was and how clearly visibly exhausted the father was. Should they have tried more to not let their work get to them and affect their overall attitudes/demeanor towards Coraline? Yes, BUT it was the motivating factor for Coraline to go to the 'other world' and for her to learn (us included) to not instantly want things to be great all the time and for life to always be perfect because there's always a catch when somethings too good to be true. I always envisioned in the end that they return to their normal selves and treat Coraline better.
Yes - someone else had a very similar comment. It really gives you a perspective change and definitely adds a layer for adults that may go right over a child's head!
@@willpina And the fact that Coraline's mom got injured after accidentally hitting the moving truck (which is why she's wearing a cast around her neck).
The parents aren’t really neglectful. They have bills to pay and essentials to provide for themselves and their child. Money doesn’t grow on trees so they have to work and meet their deadlines to get enough of it to live one. Have you ever tried to do important work while a hyperactive child is trying to get you to pay attention to them? It makes an easy job difficult and a difficult job several times worse. Also if this were typical behavior she’d be more closed off and resigned by now. The way she tries so hard and seems so disappointed suggests to me that they are normally more attentive but are going through a rough patch and need to double down on their work. Which also could explain their moving into this third of an old rundown house with poison oak growing around it. The fact that she couldn’t recognize poisonous plants looks so mopey at the place and had such a strong panicked reaction to the bugs also might suggest this house wasn’t an upgrade from their former residence and there are only two reasons to move to a less pleasant place. Evading the police or money problems… her parents don’t strike me as the “Bonnie and Clyde” of gardening book publishing so that just leaves the latter scenario.
Yeah - this has been mentioned a lot since I posted and it totally makes sense. I love YT because I always get comments like this that are a totally different perspective. In hindsight, I think yeah, the parents were just trying their best. They could've been worse, that's for sure.
I think the brilliance of it is that, as a moviegoer and especially as an adult, you _know_ all of this is way too good to come without strings. And yet, you also get why Coraline nearly falls for it. I made another comment about her parents probably not always being as neglectful as they are shown here, but that doesn't change the fact that _right now_ Coraline is a lonely, attentionstarved Preteen that suddenly gets everyting she wants so much and everything is completly about her. You get it, even if you _know_ it's probably going to hell in a handbasket.
If you wanna try a movie that's similar but still unique to Coraline, you should try Monster House. It's an underrated movie with some funny one-liners, but mostly a very creepy vibe.
Kids actually have a problem with thinking about the consequences of their actions because they are suppose to learn about it growing up. Which is why it's so important for parents to be present. I get her parents are stressed because of work but you still can't forget about the child you chose to have either way. :)
I read stories online abt the ghost kids and their backstories. The pioneer girl’s name was Hannah and she was 13 (older than Coraline) and she didn’t like having to take care of her siblings all the time. She died slowly in pain behind the mirror after the Beldam drained her life. The ghost boy’s name was Timmy and he was whipped by his mom’s sister, Sarah every time he did something wrong. Sometimes he was beaten for no reason. It was the 1700s. His dad died of the plague. Grandma’s twin’s name was Eloise and she fell down the well and discovered the world. Hannah and Timmy first rejected the buttons but after thinking about it they said they’d stay. Timmy was promised that he’d get the buttons off after his mom found a new husband. But Ofc, that never happened. He was the Beldam’s first prisoner. The pioneer girl’s mom was also dead and so was the mom of grandma’s twin. And Ms. Lovat’s name was Edna.
This film is one of my favorites! I saw it in theaters when it first came out, I was 12 and it was the creepiest thing I had ever seen. I still remember the audience absolutely loosing their minds at the part where the woman was practically naked! Even my dad - who is hard to scare - walked out of this movie saying that the shot with the Other Mother jumping into the web to catch Coraline scared him. Also fun fact! The voice actor for the cat is same voice actor for the President in Rick and Morty!
If I had watched this as a kid, I would've DEFINITELY been a bit freaked out. Someone else said they watched in in 3D which is like 👁👄👁 Oooooo, I should've caught that. I love the President 🤣
I watched this for my 10th birthday. It was in 3D and I went in knowing it was going to be scary because of the trailer. It was my first scary movie, but it didn't freak me out much honestly because Coraline was so brave. The Nightmare before Christmas, Boogey man, freaked me out so much more. And my mom was more scared than I was, which was new to see.
@@EversPrimeTime I recommend the book if you enjoyed the movie. Warning it is even darker than this. Also if you like the character of Wybie I gotta warn you that there is no Wybie in the book. They created him for the movie.
This is based on a book by neil gaiman. He is _really_ good at doing Horror for kids, just creepy enough without talking down to them. If you should ever read a book by him, I highly reccomend "The Graveyard Book" i eman, also, anything else he has written like American gods, Good Omens (in Collab with the amazing and sadly departed Sir Terry Pratchet), those two got series made for them, Good Omens is especially good and getting a second season! Also the Sandman Comics which have just gotten a series, with a pretty amazing first season... Sorry, but Neil gaiman is a master of his craft and everything he touches is gold.
There’s an episode Neil Gaiman appeared in Big Bang theory, and Sheldon totally roasted his books 😂 but it’s for fun. Surprised to him on tv screen as an Easter egg.
Yeah, not everyone who’s loving towards you actually loves you and people that actually do love you might not be loving 100% of the time but when they are it’s sincere and it won’t turn to hatefulness the moment they don’t get their way. This movie is a good demonstration of a wolf in sheep’s clothing story. I think Mr. Bobinsky would’ve survived the injury, more like, obliterated the existence of his future children I think…
I remember watching Coraline when I was 5 years old at night. It was the weekend, and it was super late, then this movie came on one of the late-night movie channels. I saw it was a cartoon and thought it would be fun to watch, since at that time all the kid shows were basically off till the morning. This movie absolutely traumatized me!!! HAHA! I was scared that the other mother would come and snatch me from my bed while I was sleeping! The ghost children creeped me out too, especially the girl whose face was frozen in fear! Every time, my blankets were jumbled on the bed, I thought she was underneath them! Now, that I'm older I have started to rewatch this movie to make it less frightening, because for the longest time i refused to watch this movie! HAHA! After watching it a few times I decided to watch some reaction videos of the movie to make it even less frightening! Now I can actually enjoy the movie for what it is! I absolutely love this movie now! And I love your reaction to it, I was cracking up the whole time!!! I would say this movie is for kids, but just the more hardcore ones. Kudos to you if you were able to watch this as a kid and not get scared HAHA!
Fun fact: Coraline parents were under beldam's curse, it wasn't mentioned in the movie or the book, but in mythology that's one of beldam's powers( yes beldam is not her name, it's what she is, a species, the witch from jhon and mary fairy tale was a beldam, so she wasnt lying when she said there were more other mother's)they were not this way before, they have become like this when they moved on to the pink palace, it was a little mention in the book, when Coraline said her father( yes that guy) was the one who taught her abou courage, he was Coraline biggest influence and during the book, she used a lot of his knowllodge to win against that witch
One movie theorist suggests the reason the cat can talk in the Beldam’s world and can understand her in either one and find it’s way in and out is because he was a child that the Beldam tried to steal the soul of but at the last second the soul was able to escape but disembodied and it possessed the body of a cat. Giving it a longer lifespan and him a physical form.

I LOVE THIS REACTION SO MUCH. I watched this movie a bunch as a little kid so I kind of never realised just how unsettling it is. The thing that freaked me out the most was the reason why Mr. Bobinski was blue. He was apart of the liquidation crew during Chernobyl and that's why he's blue and he looks weird. Like isn't that such a freaky detail to put IN A KIDS MOVIE.
The parents are not neglectful, they are just poor. They sit with Coraline each meal and they listen to her stories about the well and the other world. You can tell they are struggling and need to finish and sell the catalog. (They only gave the movers $1 tip, they have 'slop' for dinner, they are at a second-hand store to take advantage of a President's Day discount for a school uniform),
Listen to the words of the song about Coraline… when you know the full context EVERYTHING changes. “When she comes around exploring mother and I will never ever make it boring,” (here’s the big part) “our eyes will be on Coraline!”
Ok…soo I know we all wanted them to drop that hand down the well right……buuuut……what if I told you that the well is another entrance to the “Other World” lol
i watched this movie in theatres when it came out and it was a huge fav of mine all through my teens, i love it so much 💜it's always really nice to see someone else enjoy it too! if you want another good one with a similar vibe/tone (but a very different story) you should try paranorman, it's from the same studio and it's just as good imo
I definitely enjoyed watching this with you.. Your reactions were to much..lolol I’ve actually seen this many times now but it was fun watching it with you.. New follower..😉TYSM 😄👏👏
I don't really think the parents were that mean. Not to the point where I'd call it abuse or neglect. They were snippy but at the same time Coraline was a bit of a brat for a lot of the movie and parents need to be able to put their foot down when their kid is misbehaving. They definitely could've been nicer but they'd also just moved and were probably too busy with adult things to be patient with Coraline. On an unrelated note if you're interested in smaller videos to react to or just watch on your own there's a really good Coraline vs Alice from Alice in wonderland rap battle on TH-cam. I think it's by freshy kanal. Kind of a random thing to bring up but it's really good and this reaction reminded me of it.
It really is a great movie. I think I would've been freaked out if I had saw it at 7 😅 Which is funny because I think I saw Shinning around that time 😂
@@EversPrimeTime thank you! it's a bit more lighthearted, so pretty much what you were expecting coraline to be like. still has a ton of great spooky moments though!
There is a serious lack of reactions to Laika’s movies. If you’re looking for another one to watch for Halloween, I recommend “Paranorman.” Very overlooked movie.
I just wanted to mention it bc I haven't seen anyone else say it, but that all access lanyard hanging behind you kept moving throughout the reaction O.o imma just assume the best and say you had a fan or something blowing 🤔 Anyways Loved the reaction!
On the topic of the parents’ behavior, it’s implied that there was a car accident and that it financially ruined them. At least there was an accident that caused her mom to have a neck brace and they had to move due to financial hardship. Could they have handled it better? Absolutely. But if you look at it from the angle of the parents desperately trying to put food on the table for their child then it makes sense.
Love this movie sm. And idk if you’re still looking for movie suggestions but mine are labyrinth with David Bowie. It has lots of songs and it’s pretty weird but it’s a great movie. And also velerian. It’s similar to guardians of the galaxy imo and it has cool alien visuals. Or like cgi visuals ig. Idk but it’s cool
What if other Wybe is secretly grandma's missing sister and other father is secretly the little boy. What if she made sand for the dolls from the ghost children's souls.
I don't know if anyone commented this (Granted I didn't scroll the entire comment section to find out), but re-listen to Other Father's song and pay attention to the words. It's a warning.

On top of a short deadline, they also had to deal with the move at the same time.
"She's as cute as a button in the eyes of anyone who sees her--" I've seen this plenty of times, but just caught this here!!
If you wanna try a movie that's similar but still unique to Coraline, you should try Monster House. It's an underrated movie with some funny one-liners, but mostly a very creepy vibe.
I think I've actually heard of it. I'll throw it on the list of potentials for next year :)
Someone else said they watched in in 3D which is like 👁👄👁
Oooooo, I should've caught that.
The other father's song was one giant warning but it's so subtle but it has to be otherwise he'll be killed by the other mother
I read this book before I saw the movie. Though the toned it down and played around with things. This was a nice adaptation. Such a fun dark movie.
I didn't know it had a book until today 😅
@@EversPrimeTime I recommend the book if you enjoyed the movie. Warning it is even darker than this. Also if you like the character of Wybie I gotta warn you that there is no Wybie in the book. They created him for the movie.
This is based on a book by neil gaiman. He is _really_ good at doing Horror for kids, just creepy enough without talking down to them. If you should ever read a book by him, I highly reccomend "The Graveyard Book"
i eman, also, anything else he has written like American gods, Good Omens (in Collab with the amazing and sadly departed Sir Terry Pratchet), those two got series made for them, Good Omens is especially good and getting a second season!
I saw this in 3d. You should have seen the opening with the needle coming right at you
Oh hellllll no 😅
Fun fact: Coraline parents were under beldam's curse, it wasn't mentioned in the movie or the book, but in mythology that's one of beldam's powers( yes beldam is not her name, it's what she is, a species, the witch from jhon and mary fairy tale was a beldam, so she wasnt lying when she said there were more other mother's)they were not this way before, they have become like this when they moved on to the pink palace, it was a little mention in the book, when Coraline said her father( yes that guy) was the one who taught her abou courage, he was Coraline biggest influence and during the book, she used a lot of his knowllodge to win against that witch
Oh good lord. A bit of a sad theory 😅 but possible!
Gaiman actually confirmed that cat is someone we know; Morpheus!
@@TheSylvirr okay, either way I’d require some convincing but just for clarification, Morpheus from the Matrix or Morpheus the Greek God?
@@christianmarshal6117, the greek god. He is the sandman, the king of dreams
@@christianmarshal6117 Morpheus from Neil Gaiman's other series, The Sandman. (Who has some deep parallels to Morpheus the god of Dreams. Coff coff.) Which now has a series out on Netflix that I highly recommend!

9:19 he has a badge of a chernobyl liquidator
I LOVE THIS REACTION SO MUCH. I watched this movie a bunch as a little kid so I kind of never realised just how unsettling it is. The thing that freaked me out the most was the reason why Mr. Bobinski was blue. He was apart of the liquidation crew during Chernobyl and that's why he's blue and he looks weird. Like isn't that such a freaky detail to put IN A KIDS MOVIE.
43:08 “was that the cat?” 😂😂😂 awe
The parents are not neglectful, they are just poor. They sit with Coraline each meal and they listen to her stories about the well and the other world. You can tell they are struggling and need to finish and sell the catalog. (They only gave the movers $1 tip, they have 'slop' for dinner, they are at a second-hand store to take advantage of a President's Day discount for a school uniform),
Listen to the words of the song about Coraline… when you know the full context EVERYTHING changes.
“When she comes around exploring mother and I will never ever make it boring,” (here’s the big part) “our eyes will be on Coraline!”
This is still my most favorite movie NEVER GETS OLD
I can easily see myself watching this every year now!
@@EversPrimeTime AYY I been watching this since it came out lol it's just so good
the way she throws the cat 🤣LMAO
She said Y E E T
Ok…soo I know we all wanted them to drop that hand down the well right……buuuut……what if I told you that the well is another entrance to the “Other World” lol

Oh GOD 😅😅
i watched this movie in theatres when it came out and it was a huge fav of mine all through my teens, i love it so much 💜it's always really nice to see someone else enjoy it too! if you want another good one with a similar vibe/tone (but a very different story) you should try paranorman, it's from the same studio and it's just as good imo
22:45 LOL
It do be like this sometimes 😅
When I heard the music at the start of this video I already knew what scene he's watching
I definitely enjoyed watching this with you.. Your reactions were to much..lolol I’ve actually seen this many times now but it was fun watching it with you.. New follower..😉TYSM 😄👏👏
You may recognize the cat, as the President from Rick and Morty.
I didn't 😥 Thank you though! That's awesome :D
This movie and Monster House made me wonder how on EARTH were these kids movies??? O_O They're a bit much. Hehe.
20:23 portraits of the ghost kids before then. Two girls and one boy
Kubo and the Two Strings by the same company even has great Halloween vibes and an epic story
*writes that down*
@@EversPrimeTime, All of the Laika Studios movies are reaction worthy
I remember watching this movie when I was 5 and yes I got nightmares but looking back at it, it's nostalgic
23:39 _"You will eat Ze bugs"_
13:29 BIG red flag right there.
Absolutely massssssive
I think the word for this music might be "whimsical"
Grew up watching this and I was 7 when I saw it and loved it and it never freaked me out
It really is a great movie. I think I would've been freaked out if I had saw it at 7 😅 Which is funny because I think I saw Shinning around that time 😂
paranorman is another banger from laika, you should react to that next :)
I'll be taking a look at it - thanks for the recommendation!
@@EversPrimeTime thank you! it's a bit more lighthearted, so pretty much what you were expecting coraline to be like. still has a ton of great spooky moments though!
Kid's First Horror Movie!
Honestly...this is how I'd introduce my kids to the genre
There is a serious lack of reactions to Laika’s movies. If you’re looking for another one to watch for Halloween, I recommend “Paranorman.” Very overlooked movie.
I'm getting a few requests of this movie - I'll be taking a better look at it :D
I just wanted to mention it bc I haven't seen anyone else say it, but that all access lanyard hanging behind you kept moving throughout the reaction O.o imma just assume the best and say you had a fan or something blowing 🤔 Anyways Loved the reaction!

well we talked during chat about it -

but yeah

Megamind
&
The hunchback of notredam

are definitley worth it to rewatch
On the topic of the parents’ behavior, it’s implied that there was a car accident and that it financially ruined them. At least there was an accident that caused her mom to have a neck brace and they had to move due to financial hardship. Could they have handled it better? Absolutely. But if you look at it from the angle of the parents desperately trying to put food on the table for their child then it makes sense.
i love your reactions ! :)
Thank you so much for watching them! :D
HERE FOR THE UNINTENTIONAL TRAUMA
CHILDHOOD TRAUMA INITATIED
OMG youre killing me with those cute dimplessss. Loved the reaction! Subscribed
Thank you ☺☺☺ Welcome in :)
I wish they can put rated r because it’s not a kids movie
Love this movie sm. And idk if you’re still looking for movie suggestions but mine are labyrinth with David Bowie. It has lots of songs and it’s pretty weird but it’s a great movie. And also velerian. It’s similar to guardians of the galaxy imo and it has cool alien visuals. Or like cgi visuals ig. Idk but it’s cool
I'll throw it on my suggestion list and take a look some time! Thanks a lot for watching and for the recommendation :D
It's a warning.
love this movie!!
It's sooo good :D
Is it just me or does the cat sound like the president from rick and morty?
