Layne Staley had such a unique voice. What a great talent. Kurt Cobain once said, "I know I don't have much of a voice, but Layne has one hell of a voice".
Great pick JC!! We enjoyed that one ☝️
The Man in the Box was a man named Doc who lived in a cardboard box in downtown Seattle. He managed to get a job at a local nightclub setting up for shows. One weekend they were setting up a showcase for labels to see the local music scene. Doc got to talking to a lady from a label and she offered him a job. The last they saw of Doc was him heading to LA to work for the label.
True story. My husband's band was in the showcase.
Always loved the song, beat and vocals.
Mike Starr, tried getting clean and sober many times after Lane died. I had the honor of meeting him at an AA meeting in Utah the last time he tried to get sober.
He was so haunted by Lane it broke me to hear his thoughts on the matter.
I've been a published writer since the age of 16 and the few weeks that Mike spent in Utah we wrote together.
I wish the writing we did could have helped him pocket the deep regrets he had, but it didn't work out that way.
Mike Starr died in Utah.
3 days after our last writing session.
RIP
Lane
RIP
Mike.
I am forever changed by you both.
You listened to the non-explicit version! I was too old for the grunge stage, so I’ve always heard this song as a cover-the lyrics are more identifiable in the versions I’ve heard.
I was not a fan until a few years ago. I saw a live performance on TH-cam of their song “Love hate Love “ and I was hooked. At their peak their live performances were among the best.
Of not seeing them live or not listening not until now
There’s so much more that you need to hear from them!
became a fan only in the last 2 or 3 years and so sad i never got the chance to experience them live.the tunes are just top and so heartfelt.rip layne and mike
you can still see them of course no Layne but William does a fantastic job and the new albums with WD are badass🤘🤘🤘
The Bon Jovi comment was astute: "The famous voice box in Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” is the reason guitarist Jerry Cantrell used a voice box in Alice in Chains’ song. Producer Dave Jerden encourage the addition, sensing it would help make the song a hit."
One of the cassette tapes we ‘borrowed’ from older siblings and our friends passed around.
Best rock/grunge vocalist of all time and top3 bands of all time❤❤❤❤❤! God rest your beautiful soul Layne, we miss you!!!
This hits hard every time. And I love it.
Greatest Rock voice all time!!!!
Agreed❤❤❤❤!!!
The BEST of the best. RIP Layne.
Strangely enough, I like Alice In Chains and this song in particular much more now (I'm 56) than when it came out. I'm even trying to sing it every now and then.
Sirs, please AIC is in a class by itself. Layne is one of the greatest voices. RIP LAYNE😢❤
Had a family w/kids but liked to listen by myself in the car!!!
I saw an interesting article recently. The music industry was basically controlled by 4 - 5 studio heads. The "hair" metal bands that were popular were asking for more money and spending a million dollars on some of their videos. They could get the grunge music bands coming out of Seattle for a lot less. Some as low as $75,000. The heads of the industry decided to promote grunge. One day posters of bands like Cinderella, Great White, Poison, Warrant... were up in the music offices and the next day posters of Nirvana and other grunge bands were up and being promoted. It would be harder for this to happen now because there are so many independent studios and singers. That's a reason there's more variety today but the studio musicians are still the ones to win the Grammys etc. Because they have the financial backing of the studios.
More variety today? 😕
Hell yeah JAPCAR84! Brought me and Chuey out of the woodwork.
BP2, we are so close in age what the crap do you mean "if I were younger"? Never too old to rock my darling.
🤘🤘 🐾🐾 🤘🤘
Grunge definitely grew as a reaction to the bubble gum songs of the 80's & the disillusionment with American society at the time. It was an "alternative" to the mainstream. Like the classic line from Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit: Here we are now, entertain us I feel stupid, and contagious Here we are now, entertain us.🤘
I remember seeing them live multiple times around 1990-91 in the Seattle and Spokane WA areas
You lucky dog!
Great song and RIP Singer Layne Staley & Bassist Mike Starr, Guitarist Jerry Cantrell said the song was about the felling of felling of being dismissed by radio station producers and the label Producers not believing in the song, which they were So F'n Wrong. Check out the Live at the Moore Theatre
BP2! "I don't give an f". I never thought of that for grunge; it's perfect! I'm definitely stealing that one😁
Hi. 👋🏻 from America
Alabama to be exact lol I enjoy watching y’all ❤😂
What a lovely surprise on a Friday afternoon! 😉
Cheers Japcar.👍
@GaryHolloway-810 Thanks, back at you man.
Dive into them, and you’ll find some haunting harmonies between Layne, and Jerry
Alice is great. Look for- bleed the freak.
Or sea of sorrow.
Please do their song "Would ?".
Nice choice Japcar.
This instrumental gets stuck in your head, doesn't it?
They were definitely part of the grunge movement.
I get a bit of all of them, Bon Jovi, GNR, and Nirvana.
Thanks, and yeah, the beat/guitar riff is very catchy. Also, Layne Staley's and Jerry Cantrell's harmonies linger as well.
only nirvana was grunge the others mentioned were hair metal chick rock--Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were around becore "grunge" became a media term to lump all Seattle music in one genre--none of them sounded the same
Thanks for this. One of my favs. ❤
Great suggestion japcar. I agree with BP2 on this one. It had an appeal to me and if I were 30 years or so younger, I would be listening to it. I like how it is different than so many of the pop era songs type genre. Not so much appealing to me at this stage of my life, but I definitely enjoyed it. Thanks guys for another great reaction.- Hawk
Thanks Hawk, I'm glad that you enjoyed it on some level.
If you can & if you haven't already, could you react to their song Rooster? This was always my go-to by them, but then I heard Rooster & now I can't choose between the 2 (obviously they have more great songs, but those are the ones that get stuck in my head the most).
The Band Stone Temple Pilots is a band that was popular during the same time AIC was popular. There lead singer Scott Weiland was a great singer like Layne. And Weiland was in another band named Velvet Revolver. Two of their members were from the rock band Guns N’ Roses. Duff Mc Kagan played bass and sang back up vocals and Slash played lead guitar. Weiland was the lead singer. They are all assets to their craft. Layne and Scott are missed. Great video. Thanks
He never used a talk box or auto tune he could to the sound a talk box swear you people
i'm 68 years old, and an AIC fan since day one. no one sings like layne, either now or in the past. they were mislabeled as a grunge band. they were pure rock and roll.
Good song, heard of them before but never really listened to much, that was a good one though!
Layne is the GOAT, Jerry is 🔥
Check out love hate love live at the Moore theatre - Down in a hole MTV unplugged 🔥🔥
Out of all the bands in the 90s Alice in Chains are my favorite...
Between to ferns you'll thank me great choices like this song
I never heard of em
welcome to Alice its a deep rabbit hole
Sounds like the wawa on guitar with vocal scat. Could be wrong. They are huge and very talented...NOT Bon Jovi! I am 60 and rock this stuff! Good job guys but need more rock knowledge.
ahhhhhhhhh Bon Jovi?!?!?
nahhh that was chick rock
What about The Cult song FIRE WOMAN 🔥🔥👍
Rooster, down in a hole, nutshell
React to Love HateLove Live At TheMoore, he is unbelievable
Do unedited version
Bon Jovi... really? What rock were you under? It was almost a decade between them and one does not give a..
No one compares to AIC ❤️💔💔❤️
welcome to the endless rabbit hole of great Hard Rock-Metal -when Rob Halford and Kerry King say Layne was the most powerful voice they ever heard you believe them--By the way Never compare AiC to bon jovi radio pop chick😊 rock hair metal
Layne Staley had the best voice ever....Bon Jovi...not even in the same genre plus not even close to having the talent that Alice in Chains had....
@daphneboutin2714
Well done, we know Bon Jovi were not the same genre, just a comparison we happened to mention.
As for talent, Bon Jovi had talent and a lot of hit singles.
Cheers
Cheers!!!
@@BritPopsReacthit singles dont make you a great band tho just popular with the chicks in the 90s--milli vanilli had hit singles too
Neither GnR nor Bon Jovi. There is no other band that is quite like Alice in Chains. You need to get deeper into the albums; for example, listen to the first three songs on Dirt without a break, then give us your opinion.
Far from Bon Jovi come on guys
We know just you have to admit some of the sound is matched but as bands far apart! 👍🏻
4+ minutes before you guys start the song.... thats LONGER than the song itself, get on it faster!
@JohnDoe-iv7yu
Nope!
4 minutes for us is quick.
Why you in such a hurry, slow down, take it easy, relax, chill a little.
We got all the time in the world mate.
Cheers and don't forget to smile it's a workout for the face! 😆
I enjoyed your intro more than the song 😇 Just not my genre, sorry!
MY CRAZY FRIEND! HELLO
@chueysmama2622 love you and miss you my dear! 😘
