- Andrew Gray, Curator of Herpetology at Manchester Museum spent his career studying the Splendid leaf frog. However, when a supposed new species arrived from Central America, he made a shocking discovery. Using the original specimen of the Splendid leaf frog-first collected in 1902-as a comparison, Gray noticed several unique distinctions between the latest arrivals and those he had been studying. These were, in fact, the Splendid leaf frog and the frogs Gray had been studying were the new species.

“It’s remarkable that such a distinctive new species has remained undetected for such a long time” he said. The finding required a designation for the mistaken amphibians. As the discoverer, Gray was given the honor and decided to name them after his granddaughter, Sylvia. Less than 150 specimens of Sylvia’s leaf frog have been recorded, and there are only 50 known specimens of the Splendid leaf frog. Filmmaker Katie Garrett highlights the importance of correctly classifying and conserving these rare creatures in this stunning short.

When I was a kid, we had caught few fish from the lake and I kept them in a big drum.
After few days I noticed there was a fish which had a small legs and different.
I and my friend felt like we had discovered a new variety of fish :)
We were excited and fed it daily.
After a week or so I came to realize it was a frog and I had never seen a tadpole before.
I felt like a fool :)
Thanks to videos like these and their brilliant efforts, we come to know more about many animals.

I used to have a bunch of frogs, toads, geckos & so on. I loved them. Espectially tree frogs serenading me in the winter!
After studying this frog for nearly a decade, I came to realize that it's actually a completely different type of frog to the one I thought I was studying.

I encourage anyone that loves frogs to catch them safely and gently and to love them and appreciate them. They are super friendly and they love the warmth you give them from your hands. They might pee on you but that’s normal. I miss the frogs that used to visit my pool every night and sing, now that we’ve drained it and put it away I haven’t seen them in months :/ be safe limey
If I ever becoming extremely successful in my career and end up making a ton of money, I want to donate so much to these organizations that are at the forefront of the conservation and understanding of our natural world. As the stewards of this planet, it's our duty to protect and understand it.

I've always loved (especially the many gorgeous green) tree & leaf frogs, & actually all treefrogs. Their odd, suction toes are so beautiful, with such an ingenious structure and that alone makes them so interesting!

Manchester Museum is amazing. If anyone have the opportunity to be in Manchester, they should visit it.
Spent post high school summer in the field with Scaphiopus bombifrons and S. Hammond and their hybrids. Some of the larvae would become huge and monstrous, like small versions of the Devonian placoderm Donkleosteus, while others remained normal, to serve as a food supply for the big ones. But the I'll conceived divided terrarium I was made to construct with an absence tools, failed to keep the tenacious buggers from somehow scooting under the tiny gap beneath the wooden slats caused by the caulking or over the tightly covered netting at the top. But I don't think anyone knew about epigenetics back in 1976, so we would have barking up the wrong tree with the electrophoresis anyway. I think it's a survival mechanism to insure the survival of at least some of the tadpoles when the cow tanks they spawned in dried up.
This frog is extremely rare. Let's kill one and put it in a jar. 🤨😒😒😒

That has been a practice since the earliest days of natural sciences, when amphibians weren't a threatened species, and no conscience of manmade extinction existed. Melville wrote that whales were inextinguishable, and Verne that killing a predator was always good.
Now, not all biologists can go to jungles and deserts (carrying their labs) to study the anatomy and genetics of some rarely seen amphibian in South America. Specially when the way to discern between species is by comparison.
Here we had a living Ecuadorian frog and a conserved specimen taken decades ago in Panama. Get the picture?
They don’t kill them, they wait until they die naturally. They wouldn’t kill a random one just to preserve it.
I really do respect these people and what they do, and I grew up going to science museums. I feel sad about the capture of these individual creatures, but I can’t fathom the scope of the benefits of studying them.
I rescued tadpoles in our pool when I was younger not knowing what they were but that it was about to freeze outside, so I collected them, put them in a fish tank inside and raised them, I later found out after they grew legs and turned green that they were tree frogs. Quite friendly little buggars, they used to climb on my curtains and my glasses and ride around my room with me and oh they loved live crickets, but I knew when spring came I had to release them so I carried the aquarium outside and removed the screen lid and had to sadly set them free by a tree. They'd still come around and visit me occasionally.
