Identifying Early US Washington Stamp

- I share a walkthrough the process of how I identified a glassine full of 14 potential US #540's. They each catalog at $ 9.50 each and I had been avoiding them because early US stamps can be a real pain-- these were not that bad :)
I am well aware about the music being too loud in this video...I have handled that better in more recent videos.

I have been collecting for a little over a year now and I have learned so much that it is def hard to keep up with all of it. I have a notebook that I keep info in, the catalogs can be tricky especially the specialized ones the go deep and you have to at least know some of the symbols, or you will be looking back so much you won't be able to keep up with what you're doing.
Advice to you that do not add any background music while you talking .

A quick way to sort 540 and 546 is by perfs, 11x10 vs 11. Also almost all flat plays have some traces of ink on back.

I know that it can be super frustrating to identify stamps. I think they make the description vague so you will have to get it expertized to be certain. I have the precision gauge as well it is a fantastic tool.

I'm not 100% sure exactly what you are asking to be honest, however, coil stamps definitely came in rolls and are imperforate on either the tops or sides. If they are perforated on all sides they likely came from a sheet. Some of these older stamps have the year on them but lots do not.

540 what type printing is worth?
Now that I know the difference between Flat press and Rotary I now need to find out the difference between Flat Press and Offset.
I actually have not looked into it yet either!
The graphic designer of that catalog needs a kick in the backside, that is such a confusing way to present information. I'm seriously considering making some clear, printed flowchart-style identification guides and selling them on etsy. For this stamp and other problematic, potentially high value stamps like this. The problem for me would be getting access to all the correct originals for high quality detail photography. I have the setup to do it perfectly and colour accurate, I just don't have the stamps.
Agreed, especially for a novice stamp collector, I had no friggin idea how to use it when I first started. It's quite far from "user-friendly"! I hear you on the flow charts. The best that I have found so far would be the features on stampsmarter.org/features/Home_Features.html
How do you measure the stamp if it's on a cover?
The same way, the gauge is clear so just put it over the stamp and take your measurements!
@@KylesStamps Thanks for your reply. It's few and far between. I have a fourth class advertisement. One Franklin and a two cent Washington. Funny the Washington is pasted upside down. Both are hand cancel but no date. It bogiles my mind STAMPS!

Thanks because I have never done my older stamps because it’s too much of a challenge for me. But with this ruler maybe I can have more success of classifying my older stamps. I have no trouble with all the commemoratives because they are not a challenge. I will get this ordered tomorrow.
There is a whole bunch of features on that gauge that I haven't used yet. The grid for MM measurements alone won me over!
