    LOL! It's fun to hear your passion about these wonderful flowers! They are all absolutely beautiful.... Tell me, do you ever name your plants? .... 😀 .... For me the first thing came to mind when I saw the Cattleya amethystoglossa was 'Freckles". 😎

    Lueddemanniana is my favourite species. Those are two very well grown plants! They really love your conditions, they’re a bit more of challenge for a windowsill grower in the UK. I’m sure you know but Armando Mantellini at Orquiverde has some stunning and very choice clones of lueddemanniana for sale in the USA at the moment, but you have to be quick!

    Love the C. amethystoglossa also. In regards to triploids - yes, they can be more vigorous than the diploids and thus for the floriculture trade they make sense. One of my favorite hybrids from years ago is Lc. Garden Delight and it grew like a weed outdoors here in SoCal and it was bred as a triploid (diploid L. anceps by a big old tetraploid Cattleya.) However, for a species I'm a bit against filling up collections of triploids. We (humans) are causing a great extinction and that certainly includes most orchids. I believe it is best to propagate diploids as widely as possible, distributing them as widely as can be done, so there is a large pool of extant orchids as long as possible. It is possible, maybe even likely, that there won't be any native C. amethystoglossa left in the wild a century from now.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is certainly a real possibility! All good points!

    That amethystoglossa is stunning, I wish I had the space for one. I already got in over my head with a tigrina that I think I'll have to sell because I overestimated its size and mess of roots. Luckily for the orchid hobbyist H&R are finally selling selfings of their 4N lines as they edge closer to retirement- I picked up a 4N luddemaniana and some 4N walkeriana babies last fall.

    Your Cattleya amethystoglossa and Cattleya lueddemanniana are stunning. I am still getting to grips with looking after my Cattleya amethystoglossa so no blooms yet but I did get one bloom off my C. lueddemanniana. It blooms well late summer/early fall but this is the first time for winter/spring. I am hoping to get it to bloom twice a year. It is one of my favourites.

    Those lueddemanniana look amazing! I got a rubra from plantio orquidea and now I wish I bought some other color forms while I was there...
    Not sure how to feel about polyploid plants. Triploids seem like a crappy thing to make (though h&r is no longer doing so for most of their stuff). It seems like it will become a major obstacle for future generations of breeders.
    Tetraploid species is also kind of a weird thing, I know that line breeding can make some major alterations (see some of the new walkers), but isn't the point of species plants to have a relatively accurate representation of what exists in nature? If you are going to make it into a genetic freak to improve its characteristics, you might as well add some trace ancestry of other species, so long as it's not noticed.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve been collecting some of the amethystoglossa colors as well! I’ve got a few years to wait before seeing any flowers though! The tetraploids were created specifically so that the Asian breeders couldn’t steal H&R hard work and start their own breeding lines., Seemed to work for Harry and Roy!

    I'd have been inclined to keep the rubra lueddemanniana, I think the color is better and, maybe, the blooms would get bigger as the plant matures. Although I still just don't like the smell. When I had to move the plants into the garage for a couple days and mine was in bloom, stunk up the place. My dad asked me, "what is that smell?"
