The Sultan of Swing. One of rock's true gentlemen.
A true legend and a very fun and humble man. Thanks a lot for everything Mark!
Such immense joy this man has given us.
He’s the reason I play guitar today. This is a lovely interview - it feels like a conversation with a long time friend.
Same here. I first touched an electric guitar because of him. Always Number one in my list.
Same here!!!
For me it was Hank - then Brian May as I discovered Queen but never really got into his playing (as superb as it is) - and then MK. To this day he is up there as one of the few I will listen to virtually everyday and still be awestruck by his playing.
Same
Same here, love from France
I meet Mark one evening in London, he’s an absolute gentleman , very down to earth and very unassuming we spoke about our dogs funny enough as I’d recently lost my boy a Lovely Red Labrador, I was upset about it and got a little bit emotional about it, and he totally understood and I could tell he had been were I was, I will never forget that meeting with him, he’s a really Lovely Genuine Fella.. the fact that he is one of our GREATEST SINGER/SONGWRITERS and Unbelievably GREAT GUITARIST was neither hear nor there that night he was just himself, and he was exactly how I’d imagine him to be, a really genuine Fella.. I was in Awe of him, just goes to show that the people that can really do it don’t have to shout about it, that’s what I got from him, we could all learn a lot from Mark Knopfler ❤️❤️❤️⭐️🌞 a Real Musician and Artist he is .. I feel Blessed to have met him ❤️👍🏻⭐️🌞🌞
I had a similar experience with Phil Collins
I always wondered what I would talk about if I met somebody famous and knew better then tell them that they are my favorite guitar player. They hear that everyday. You got to talk with him about something that he will undoubtably never forget and if he were to see you again he will remember you. I met Steve Morse after a show at the bar behind the Cleveland Agora, I walked in and sat down next to him and told him I really enjoyed the show. He smiled and said thanks. I just start talking about my week and how I had spent everyday that week working in my kitchen. I saw that i had gotten his attention so I told him what my wife had done. My lovely wife decided to tear the wallpaper off the wall and had painted straight over the ripped paper and glue and it looked horrible. She was very worried I would be mad but I smiled and told her I could fix it. I skimmed the walls and sanded and skimmed and sanded all week, I had finally painted the wall just before the show. Steve looked at me and said that his wife had done the same thing and we just started laughing like we were old friends and spoke about working on our wives house projects. Great time. Since then Ive met several famous musicians and do the same thing, just shoot the breeze.
Im not a famous guitar player but a lot of people know me hear in my neck of Florida as a hired guitarist, IM very weary about people saying that Im a good guitar player, I would much rather just be a normal person and talk about your day with ya...
@@doyle935 if you can avoid gushing .... Yeah much better.
Imagine people fauning over you you're entire life!!!!
@@doyle935 go look up Ozzy Osbourne fauning all over Paul McCartney. It's starts off really well and McCartney seemed genuinely happy to meet him. Osbourne then goes on a rant about how if it wasn't for the Beatles he'd have never become a muzo blah blah...
McCartney looked seriously saddened at this point
I met Ozzy and Shane Mac Gowan once, and never understood a word they said..
I have followed Mark Knopfler since the first t.v. Performance. It’s been a blessing. Thank you. Phil, Suffolk. 😊
Mark, thank you for colouring our lives ❤
Saw him in Dire Straits at Wembly Arena in '85 - they had played at Live Aid that afternoon at Wembly Stadium. I was pretty ill in hospital at the time - I'd just been diagnosed as type 1 diabetic and got permission to leave, travel to London on my own and return the following day - took my third ever insulin injection at Wembley. A very special gig for many reasons - fantastic band and as a needle phobic it showed me my life wasn't actually over - still alive and kicking and playing guitar in a "dad rock" pub covers band.
don’t comment usually….but just read your post….Always loved Mark and Dire Straits….and, I was lucky enough to be a steward at the proper old Wembley Stadium for Live Aid….one of the best days of my life…I was is the stadium at 07.30 in the morning before all the people came in…amazing experience….I was 24…now I’m 62, play guitar still (since I was 9)…top respect mate for getting to the gig while being diagnosed unwell…still play, and love the Dad Rock comment…I’m hoping to get back in a band playing Dad covers someday…sounds bloody brilliant…Cheers mate, from Andy B in Wales / North Shropshire
@@andybolam6639 Cheers mate - and re getting back into gigging - Do it 🙂. Open mics are a great way to find players of all levels or maybe put your old band back together. There's nothing like the adrenaline kick from playing to a lively pub crowd.
Great stuff, my recording of Live in ‘85 is one of my favourite possessions. I taped it off the tv onto Betamax, then transferred it to VHS, and finally to DVD. Happy Days! 🎸🍾❤️
Ps. I still remember where I was when I first heard Sultans of Swing!
you lucky person
I wasn't born in that decade
With that, I absolutely admire and feel awesome with you people who have personal experience in a remarkable event in history. At least what I can do now is to look back and appreciate the wisdom of the veteran musicians hold.
He is so connected to his audience. Never takes people for granted. When he acknowledges how people have travelled, parked their car, bought sandwiches etc - he gets just what we are wanting and seeks to serve it.
The solo on "Tunnel of Love" is such a beautiful one. I never tire of it. Very moving.
He is a genius! And a gentleman! Thanks for posting this! 😀👍🎸🎶🦋🌺💐🎈😝
Can't say enough good things about MK. This sale is a milestone in his life. Long may you run, sir.
We need more Mark Knopflers. What a true gent.
Amazing interview. Ive had the honor of assisting Butch in building 2 of the guitars Mark spoke about. He's been so gracious in supporting and encouraging us. A true gentleman.
This guy will definitely be the number one for me. So humble guy !
As someone who didn't grew up in his era but a listener of Mark Knopfler’s works, I cherish the kind of events with the interviews of veteran musicians. I learned so much from the history and memories they carry.
Am In tears watching this knowing his music is coming to an end but for me his music will live on forever Thankyou Mark for the music you have giving us Your Brother's in Arms will live on forever
On contrary. We're all waiting for his new album coming out this year
What a nice interview of a true gentleman and a musical treasure. Mark's music moves me like no other. Can't wait to hear his new album.
Mark is not just a great story teller in his songs. He is a great story teller.
I am so happy he mentioned Sailing to Philadelphia with James Taylor. This will always be in the top-3 of my favourite songs. When I first listened to it and found my two musical heroes in the same song, I instantly fell in love.
„What's that metallic sound you're making in the back of your throat anyway?" - „Rock'n roll, Sir…?" this is awesome!
My favourite guitarist. The best one. He has soul in his playing. He also could play fast licks, and did that. The bes one from old school guitarists. My biggest influence in playing and composing. I'm ukrainian, from Mykolaiv, and even there we love him and his music
Nice guy, very humble... unbelievably brilliant and original guitar player 👏
Beautiful interview of a great guitarplayer and a humble man.
Genuinely likeable and genuine guy. I could spend hours listening to him talk and play
I am privilege enough to live in the area Mark lived and sang about. I am about 5 miles from the Spanish City in Whitley Bay (i used to go to the fairground as a kid as well) also Colourcoats that Mark sings about in Tunnel of Love. There is a great video on youtube with Mark and Brian Johnson at the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. I cant imagine walking along the promenade and bumping into the two legends from the area. I will be bidding durning this auction.
What a great interview of one of the greatest , the soundtrack of my 20s ,seen Dire Straits in Sydney in the 80s will never forget. Well done Paul. on letting the interviewee talk without interruption, letting it flow . Thank You.
Wonderful interview - what a brilliant musician and more importantly, humble lovely man. Thank you Mark for the music!
Such a sweet humble man. Love him!
The Legend Mark best guitar 🎸 player❤
can't believe he really is 74 now, he's doing great!
It's so sad to see Mark getting older love this humble man.
This is what happens to people when they live long enough.
@@wout69...Yes..but it was a bit
shocking to me to see how he has aged and his face is much bigger it
seems and I am sure mine has too
as I just turned 73 on December 23. Glad he is still with us. ! #
Wonderful. Profound little gems dropped in there . . . what a great, singular guitarist and writer 😃
Wonderful humble man, brilliant
talent, and fantastic interview! ❤
I'm so thankful that when I was about 4 my late grandfather introduced me to dire straits and Mark's solo music. I used to sit in the room when my grandpa was strumming away to chord sheets of eric clapton, dire straits and many artists from the 50's through to the 90's, seeing my grandpa play and watching videos of Mark Knopfler inspired me to play the guitar. Now every time I hear dire straits or see a video of Mark I can't help but smile because it makes think about all the good memories I have with my grandpa. Truly from the bottom of my heart thank you Mr Knopfler for being such an inspiration, a great musician and a amazing person. I wish you the best for the future. Much love❤
I don't know how but this man makes me feel happy and very emotinal.thank you mark
Outstanding contribution to music, a local player who’s talent made him a great success, simple people do amazing things, and it doesn’t change them, blessed to be alive to see a pure genius
The Burns guitars behind him, my friend Curtis Johnson, lead player in 'Terry Knight and the Pack' had a six and twelve string Burns in a deep green color. They had a selector switch with one setting, 'Wild Dog." They were so cool, and they were 'British!' Everything Mark says is true. what a lovely interview. Thank you!!
Huge fan.
Keep one, for keep playing, ok.☺.
The Man on the guitar Forever.
For me for many reasons, Mr. Mark Knopfler, is the best guitar player.
communiqué - I still love this record
A real joy to hear Mark in conversation there. I do hope he's got enough guitars left for the new album! 🎶⭐👍
What a gentleman! God bless 🙏
Sailing to Philadelphia is my all time favourite and I can’t explain why but I break down in floods of tears. lol Great guitarist and wordsmith.
This is really wonderful to see. For all the footage of Mark talking about guitars that there is publicly available, it's fantastic to hear some new stories from him in a longer form interview.
Legend in song writing and guitar playing, and a huge influence on millions of people, myself included.
What an incredible grouping of guitars, all chosen by a master of the instrument.
I'm grateful for having seen this video, on 21 January 2024, the day after it's release. I won't be able to attend the auction and that has helped me to understand thoroughly, Mark Knopfler's remarks regarding the time invested to reach a point where purchasing the instruments which he really wanted, did not come so easily. The easy acwuisition diminishes the value both perceived and actual. Many thanks to one of the very greatest virtuosos of my time. This lesson was so well worth my time and enhanced my enjoyment immensely. May God continue to bless you richly.
A pleasure to listen to any time. One of a kind guy.
What a legend. Such a lovely man. Great interview
We Oregon Luthiers Salute You! Respect!
I don`t think anyone quite compares to him for the fact he is such a prolific writer of great music and can paint a picture in your mind with his playing
Who's in tears watching this so sad what a collection to have for many of years
💔😢
Mark Knopfler, the reason why I started playing guitar, my local hero... how I would love to own something from him, but the normal working man is not able to afford this, but what a fun and joy you have brought to the world..thank you Mark.
Mark you are a brilliant musician. I grew up listening to your music .it's just the type of music you can listen over and over .and still sound like the first time. God bless you and thank you for the music. Much love from South Africa
He is simply the best not only as a musician but as a human being.
We know he can not play as before but it doesn't matter his legacy in the global music is forever.
Grande Mark.
it made me a little sad when he demonstrated brothers in arms on the acoustic, you can see his right hand shaking looking for the string… none the less, love him and his work. we’re all human after all.
I’m so glad he’s never reformed Dire Straits. Total integrity. Leave it where it is.
Note the Pensa-Suhr Mk I is up for sale. Probably not a happy memory with that one, the way the last Straits tour ended.
What a personality and what a gift to the world. So humble 🌎
This is a gentleman who was born to be a guitar player and we are *so* *fortunate* to have lived in the years when he got a chance to do so -- no one has ever made the sounds with an electric guitar that Mr. Knopfler has -- they will be reverberating in human hearts and ears as long as there are any ❤
I absolutely look up to you people who got to experience those times.
I'm just really thankful that I was introduced to this side of the music industry, a knowledge worth collecting.
@@Samantha-vlly I'm very glad you've found your way to this kind of music -- watching this era of musicians perform live is a great way of experiencing some of the 'spirit' that was present during those days (and there are several great performances of Dire Straits during those years). I hope you keep exploring and find more music you love ❤
Sir MK with or without your guitars. You always want to be the best guitar player. You are the best in any kind. I love this interview💯 Stay Safe🙏🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸💕💕💕💕💕💕🎸💜🎸💋🎸❤
The emotional recognition, sort of coming to terms with the fact that our beloved instruments will outlast us regardless of how many we accumulated, as a musician of 40+ years I’m having to come to terms with this. Mark is a fantastic person to share his emotions this way, it’s so hard for a musician to say goodbye to his true love (s).
Good to hear from you Mark.
These guitars won't go to players. After the auction they remain entombed in their cases forever. The prices are too much for actual players.
He's a brilliant guitarist and song writer. Ive been a fan for well over 40 years. One of the reasons I own a variety of Strats, Les Pauls, Schecters, Teles etc. only wish I had a fraction of his talent!
I enjoyed the talk and Mr Knopfler's understatements. I saw Dire Straits on their last world tour here in Wellington New Zealand. The music still works for me now as a pensioner!
Fantstic tunes then and in the years after.
Many THANKS
Love his music, love the man. Great interview but I needed more! Fantastic news about the new album.
Dearest Mark, absolutely no one to ever come close to what you have given us! You are quite simply the very best at it, forever grateful. Thank you forever & may I hear those pipes in Heaven, you bring the Scott’s Irish to life in one’s blood! Bless You & thank you! You will forever live through these MASTERPIECES ❤ GOD BLESS
In my early life I was not a big fan of Dire Straits but during the last 10 years I have loved, searched for, and spent many’s hours enjoying Marks music. I feel lucky to have found such extraordinary pleasure in the man’s music and the man himself. I regularly binge on anything I can find on TH-cam on his work, music and chat. The guy is an absolute genius and such a down to earth humble man.
All this wonderful music, thank you for the soundtrack to my life, Mark!
Great interview with a great guitarist. I had the 45 of Sultans of Swing as a 12 year old. Always love to hear from a Geordie. Lived in Newcastle for a year as an undergrad.
What a nice interview with one of the greatest guitarists of my younger years! Thank you Christie's.
This is the best interview of mark knopfler I 've ever listened to. Great !
The guitars, the music and the person ❤️
This man is a major influence on my life, both yesterday and today, I named my son after him.
I really want to think that he is letting these instruments go to other people to benefit their beliefs rather than his lack of not needing to have to use them anymore.
I hope he’s a healthy as I wish and we’ll all be laughing about this comment in 10 years time.
Anyway, let’s all just rock it up!.
Absolute legend. We love you,Mark! ❤️
That MK1 Pensa-Suhr was such a important part of my life as a teenager it hurts to see it going. Hopefully it’s going to someone who’ll play it professionally rather than hanging it on a wall to impress their mates.
Yeah. I was literally drooling watching the On The Night vhs. I even ended up buying a Suhr replica, middle age crysis I guess.
That was my first thought. For me he is inseparable from that guitar. I'm so glad that mine stays with me...
This guy had his own unique style of playing... A legend that me feel young again seeing this... Thank you.
Saw him at Red Rocks twice. He and his band puts on as good a show as anyone ever has.
Truly a great
a true role model for any guitarist.
is he auctioning his original 58 LP, Man if he is, that will be a real tear jerker. MK is the best!!!!
Great guy.❤
Excellent interviewer..... Mark is such a gentleman too. Great video. Thank you. 😊
One of my top 5 favorite players ever.
very interesting and fun is this amazing Conversation❤ so funny
Brilliant interview 👏 a true legend and hero to so many guitarists…including myself! I’m on my back to the North East as I write this, having visited the guitar exhibition at Christie’s today. A brilliant experience, Christie’s have done a fantastic job of presenting all of MK guitars for auction. Highly recommend a visit!
A lovely interview my darling...
what an interview, what level. I play guitar because of him. Very good to see him again.
Great interview!
My dad played me hendrix..acdc .thin lizzy.. santana... Jeff beck...Rory Gallagher..all sorts as a kid......but I also remember him ...going to me...err..check this guitar out...yes he had been to the pub...but he would put brothers in arms on.... on a old vintage record deck n speakers that was infact his dad's before that......and it sounded amazing..he would go to me....listen to that guitar..he loved Mark.. and saw him live in the 80s....he never played a instrument ...but he sure feels his music...I've been playing guitar for about 30 year now... and it all started back then . Brothers in arms very moving piece of music..Great feel n tone.. beautiful
Very nice and funny interview ! 😊
I enjoyed it very much. 🔥🎸
Thank you for that.
I love you MK. I’m playing tonight at Dive Bar and I’m wearing my MK t-shirt! Blue letters!! 😊
Mark Knopfler Follow the Ribbon am in tears knowing his 🎸 are going to Auction knowing that His Music is coming to an end But one thing I have about Mark Knopfler is the Memories in his Music we love and share lets thank mark for the music he has given us.
His music is not coming to an end. We're all waiting for the new album coming out this year!!
An example of a great man, thankyou.
"it's just 2 bits of wood isn't it?" Stripped right back - yep. BUT ,- the 2 bits of wood placed in the hands of someone like MK - it becomes magical. Mark and Dire Straits have brought SOO much joy to my life. Right from being a spotty teenager suddenly working out that Sultans had double stops - and still struggling to get anywhere near playing it in the way I'd like to. His music forms such a soundtrack to my life. Never does a week, probably a day, go without me listening to this music.
Probably the greatest storyteller on real events with a guitar in hand and in the most life influencing melodious sound ..That's Mark Knopfler for me .
Been getting super into knopflers music and learning it to. He has a really interesting view of music and specifically the guitar. Shame i didnt get to see this live, hopefully there will be another one
Desde Argentina gracias por existir Mark. Me has dado tanto tanto que no se puede expresar con palabras. Y si fuera poco es un placer escucharte porque no solo sos el mejor musico de la historia sino que ejemplo para los mas jovenes. GRACIAS!
I note that his red Schecter Strat is not there. Thank goodness. I'd be heartbroken if he gave that away!
The white Schecter isn't present either.
He's in the elite league of guitarists of all time. A unique style and proper top fella.
I’m just grateful the powers that be put me on this earth at the same time as MK❤️
"And when you play THOSE notes (intro to Brothers..), everyone knows where they are." So true. And we also connect with where we have been, connected with the song. For me - 2 immediate images - the Mandela Concert, and MK starting to say something in the intro, and then stopping himself; and the video, shot in B & W for added impact.
I salute you sir Mark Knopfler. A true legend.
MK is one of our own, a true Geordie hero brought up in Gosforth, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
