  • This video is a like for like comparison between Peavey 6505 and Hughes & Kettner Deluxe 40. Metal tone only.
    I run boh amps through the same cabinet which is miced up with the same mic in the same position.
    No external effects or pedals are used other than a noise gate pedal in front of the Peavey amp. The Hughes & Kettner has its own built in noise gate which was engaged during the recording. No post recording processing has been applied.
    I set both amps to my liking to achieve that metal tone. Note - Hughes & Kettner is a very configurable amp with a multitude of channels and effects. The Peavey amp is more limited in that respect. Any additional tones or effects can be achieved through adding external devices such as guitar pedals.
    In the video I play three of my own riffs from the time when I was in a band called Sonnet 13. All rights reserved.
    The songs are Introspection, Still On This Journey and Identity.
    You can listen to the original recordings here so that you know what these riffs sound like in the full mix:

    Definitely prefer the H&K tone. It's so much 'brighter'. I get that you might not be looking for brightness with this sort of music, but for me, it would definitely sound better with bass and drums behind it. As in, it would give a better sonic range...

      I agree John. Definitely a 'brighter' tone from the H & K. I recorded Sonnet 13 album with the Peavey. I wonder what it would have sounded like had I had the H & K at the time. Anyway this will be the case on my new record. All recorded through H & K. I'm still working on it but it's getting there. 🙂

      They all have their charms, I do enjoy incorporating different styles and different tones/sounds.
      While extremely temperamental, I must say in my opinion the best tones created and most diverse amp I own is the Mesa Boogie Mark 4.
      It really delivers the bang for the buck.
      Is the Hughes and Kettner your favorite?
      Do you have other guitar heads besides the Hughes 40 and Peavey 6505?

      @@justinkantner7162 I have fallen in love with the Hughes and Kettner as it's so versatile in one amp and it's so small at the same time and all valve still. It's a phenomenal engineering design. I still the Peavey for heavy stuff though. I used to own a Marshall solid state before. My first ever amp was actually my father's old valve radio believe it or not. I have never tried that Messa Boogie model.

    was there a reason you've set different EQs on each amp? highs in peavey is at 1-2 (9 o'clock) and treble in h&k at 6 (1 o'clock)?

    • @bartekpiwonskiofficial
      @bartekpiwonskiofficial  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, both amps were set to my taste. When I played the Peavey, that's how I had it set up, and when I started playing the H&K, I dialled the tone in like that. It's just what my ears heard and what I liked. Now, there is another dimension to what you're describing. On the H&K, I used one of my presets in this video so how the knobs are set on the actual amp in the video may not necessarily exactly correspond with the preset's eq. Once you've dialled your eq on a preset, the way that the knobs are set on the amp no longer matter because the amp is responding to the preset settings and you send the signal to the amp from a footswitch or another preset controller.

  • @000gjb
    @000gjb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The H&K sounds an octave higher. Dial in less presence, little more resonance and careful on how much gain is added otherwise the bottom end will be too boomy. By modifying the settings, the amps will sound more and more similar.

    • @bartekpiwonskiofficial
      @bartekpiwonskiofficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comments. Yes, you can modify the settings to try bring them closer but the individual characteristics are still apparent. Having said that, the test was not not everything at 12:00 o'clock type of comparison.

    i've heard that the Grandmeister Deluxe 40 was based around a Mesa Boogie Rectifier style amp, which could probably pair really well with the 6505 in a mix. 🤔

    Awesome man! Was this the ultra channel? And dude that line 6 hx effects works great with this amp. What are you using for pedals normally?

    • @bartekpiwonskiofficial
      @bartekpiwonskiofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. 😊 I chose one of the distorted presets which was on the ultra channel, yes. I no longer use any extra pedals these days. With the H & K I use their midi controller and with the Peavey I used to use an overdrive pedal (Maxon 808) but it's not been used in this video. I know that you control the H & K with the line 6 effects pedal which is really cool to be honest. Something I had no idea you could do.
