Linguists did a study years ago where they came up with an alien language and presented it to a single person, where they learned some basic vocabulary for this artificial language. They then asked the participant to write down all the words as they remembered them, and they ignored spelling errors or incorrect labels. They then handed that list to another participant and repeated the experiment. After a few generations, words began to be more easily memorized and more and more of the language was accurate to the latest iteration. Visual language likely works the same way. Whichever ideas are communicated by the graphic and remembered expose the core idea underneath that people are connecting with. Iteration and reiteration can expose that further. It's basically what Instagram did with their logo redesign a while back.
If you use existing fonts and images most of the time you hamper the development of your own designing skills. In the short term it costs a lot of time to figure everything out by yourself but in the long term I am sure it pays off.
