Speaking on behalf of my amazing coach- he constantly reiterated that rowing in sculling boats (esp. the single) allows a rower to feel the boat and understand the effects of rush vs efficiency. It’s a lot easier to teach a rower about the reasoning behind staying light on the feet or not rushing the slide bc the sculling boats will not run, whereas the sweep boats have a habit of running together each rowers movement and it’s easier to get by on only power without worrying about the technique of efficiency.. anyways- that’s my two cents!! Cheers!! :)
I did my L2R on sculling, but ever since I was put in a sweep boat, I’ve never looked back, love sweep rowing, but that means If I go out on a fine single I might have to start again from scratch as haven’t spent much time on single, big difference for me is the power distribution i.e. in sweep it is totally different than sculling and also the famous torso and body lean towards your riggers in sweep, whilst in sculling it is a different body position. Great video as always Cam #yamsquad
Great video! I have a regatta coming up in 2 weeks where I’m stroking in a 4x, coxing in a 4+ and finally stroking in an 8+… variation is the key to motivation!
It’s harder to teach a sweep rower (especially if they only sweep one side) to scull than it is to teach a sculler to sweep. It’s mostly to do with what the hands need to do.
Once you feel familiar doing both, it's not much of a difference any more-it just comes down to personal preference. IMO the difference between rowing big boats (eights, quads) and small boats (singles, pairs) matters more than the oar choice.
Hey, probably the wrong video to be asking, but what % of my C2, 2k time, should I be doing my 500m intervals at? I keep meaning to try rowing on the water, but I never get round to it! Keep up the good work!
Hey Cam, I’m rising freshman at Phillips Exeter Academy and I wanted to know if you have any extra helpful tips on how to be a more desirable rower during tryouts.
Great to actually see how this all works, never seen a sculling boat never mind been in one. Seeing this is just outside Glasgow I’ve family there and wondering are there any opportunities for noobs to show up and get a spin in one?

Cam, watching you come to the Light Side has been great! 😉 Long live sculling! The only kind of rowing you can do alone!
Former collegiate rower (starboard) here who never sculled before. I just started sculling and I have no idea what to do with my right hand haha
Takes a while to get used to it!
I like sweep a lot more, sweep you can get more power down but you build imbalances. Also the 8s are my favorite event
Strathclyde Park! Hope they still serve lentil soup in the canteen.
It's been shut for ages!! 😢
I’ve only sculled once, but I feel like I got the hang of it faster than I got the hang of sweeping
Turns out using both arms independently is a little intuitive! Like skiing vs. snowboarding for me.
Nice - almost no detectable wiggles in the wake off the stern now.
Getting there! #yamsquad

Sculling is a symmetrical movement, sweeping is asymmetric. It takes one to scull but two to sweep.
The position of the hands (here, right under, left over) always remains that way?
I guess you could rig it right over left don't know anyone who does though...
There's a slightly less common style of starboard only a touch in front of port. Imagine port knuckles into the heel of starboard's palm.
GDR style was other way round
Would be interested to know the speed difference between sculling and sweep boats. Would be keen to hear you analysis on this? #yamsquad

Hi Cam, I sent a message wrt yamsquad training for me in Texas. Hope to hear from you soon :-)
Thanks Karen! I'll have a look!! #yamsquad
Poor technique is more likely to result in injury with sweep over sculling especially in an 8 where it’s easily not picked up on 🥴
