  • When you think of West Virginia's best known mineral resource, you probably think of coal, but that wasn't always the case. In fact, if you go back to the mid-1800s, West Virginia, and the Kanawha Valley in particular, was actually the largest salt producing region of the United States. Hundreds of wells along the Kanawha River produced salt on an industrial scale -- more than three million bushels each year. Now one local family is reviving that tradition - in a much smaller and more environmentally friendly way.
