    It is more important to have practical, playable and good sounding solutions in each position than knowing everything in all positions.

      I agree. I am not sure it applies, but when improvising I can sense the resolving nature of a II IV I ( or permutation) coming, and then knowing that sound in the position I find myself in is crucial. I do not have time to find a safe spot on the neck to resolve to, I must make it work where I am at the moment. I believe that in a past lesson you stressed understanding the II IV I in all keys from a position, and I really took it to heart. Thanks for your work again!

      I think you're right, but I immediately started thing about playing the SAME lick in every key in the same position which would be a great exercise for me. I'm guessing that I will do well with the 5 or 6 where I know the fingering well and fumble with the others.

    • @juliantaylor7368
      @juliantaylor7368 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe to make it even more comprehensive you could also play the chords in the same position before each lick?

      Sounding good honestly trumps everything. I've seen plenty of fast players with knowledge that are boring anyway.
      A person with 6 months of playing and a song in his heart can make more beauty than that.

  • @LaurentOutang-gg5yv
    @LaurentOutang-gg5yv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Recently I've been working on 251s trying to match each chord and its extensions up to the 5th, with the matching arpeggios all over the neck with hybrid drop 2 and 3 (the chords I can't play in drop 2, I play them in drop 3... ).
    Like chords from E string position 1(F): Dm7, FM7, Am7 following up with the matching arpeggios from E string to G string Dm7, FM7, Am7.
    And so on with G7 and CM7
    It's pretty long, mainly at the beginning but pretty effective. I would recommend to work on one set of chords per day and not trying to squiz in the 3 chords from the 251 in one session... It took me more than 3 hours to go through at the beginning! I guess the time spent doing so may vary a lot according to the level where one starts.
    Well... I did that for like 3 weeks then I couldn't take it anymore :)
    I think, regarding the learning of the fretboard that it is necessary to be strategic going from one exercise to another and of course practicing improvisation.
    To me, just working by improvising is not enough because I tend to stay in my comfort zone. The type of exercise of your video or even mine help to get over that.
    Working on several keys helps a lot to extend the 'comfort zone'. Now I'm working on the A part of Misty I'm getting better! :)I try to vary my approach and going forward and backwards always over the same topic (in my case being able to play any major 251 instantaneously from anywhere on the neck), is working fine on me...
    Well... Merry Christmas to you all ! :D
    And a big thanks to you Jens. :)

    I can get some of these but struggle with the triplets at tempo. My main method is To read the chord symbols and play the patterns they invoke in my muscle memory also the sound of each note leads to the next interval. I will memorise more 2 5 1 licks as you suggest as they also build speed.

    Hi Mr Larsen i know this isn't a guitar jazz question but is there such a guitar scale called the G#scale?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      G# major? Yes, but since it has 8 sharps we mostly talk about Ab which has only 4 flats

      Yes, but... it will usually have a qualifier. For example, G# major scale, G# minor scale, etc.

      @mattdelahunt301 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@m.charron ok asked someone that question and they told me to play in the E Major scale thats why i asked and I am trying to learn it bye ear and man its a pain in the butt.

    • @m.charron
      @m.charron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattdelahunt301 if you play the E major scale starting (and ending) on G#, that's known as the phrygian mode - a type of minor scale. For the key of G# minor, it's relative to B major - they contain the same notes.
      Also, to echo Jens, people don't usually call tunes in G# major, they'll choose Ab. And the construction is the same as every other major scale. If you can sing "do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, do" you've got it. For the natural minor, just start on 'la'.
