My guru, Sri T N Bala, was a very senior disciple of Sri Madurai Mani Iyer. As I watched this video, memories of my guru talking about Sri Mani Iyer and his music, and his unique style of singing alapanas, nereval and swaras, overwhelmed me. On dozens of occasions, during my lessons ( I learnt Carnatic vocal from him for thirty years), he sang for me in Sri Mani Iyer's voice, one of Sri Muthuswami Deekshitar's Navagraha Kritis. He sounded so much like Sri Mani Iyer that it was astonishing. If anyone who attended Sri Mani Iyer's concerts heard the audio of my guru singing like Sri Mani Iyer, he would swear that it was indeed the great vocalist himself singing. I appreciate another legend Sri Semangudi Srinivasa Iyer without any jelousy lauded Mani Iyer, shows how great the musicians. Many time I have seen great violinists like Lalgudi, TNK, MSG any more used to attend his concert even when they do not accompany him, to ascertain what sort of new sangadhis he creats in this particular kutcheri. Such was his gretness. What a genious, was he. We were mad after his concert for nearly 2 decades, not only we miss him many pamaran who could follow MGR and Shivaji also used to listen him would miss him.
