The DJ Khaled fiasco really is so emblematic of Blizzard's endless ignorance. Riot first collaborated with Imagine Dragons back in 2014 to create Warriors, which was universally beloved. Imagine Dragons were invested in it and gave it their all because they loved LoL, same with Chrissy Costanza of Against the Current who sang Legends Never Die in 2017 and later Phoenix in 2019.
It would've been so, so easy for Blizzard to just copy this. Overwatch was massive and had a huge casual playerbase, I'm willing to bet money that there were several decently popular artists who would've loved to be a part of it, who would've created a banger song dedicated to OWL finals that the crowd and the artist themselves would've been super excited for. People still love Warriors, they still love Legends Never Die. The yearly Worlds song is a proven formula that is right there for any aspiring esport to literally just ctrl + c & ctrl + v and enjoy viewer excitement.
But for god knows what reason they decided to throw DJ Khaled on stage. Poor guy didn't even do anything wrong, he was just completely out of place. It's mindboggling just how detached Blizzard was to make that decision.
Cut to 2021, thanks to maintaining an excellent relationship with Imagine Dragons, Riot gets them to do the opening for their Netflix show and they make yet another banger in Enemy. Arcane is plastered all over their social media and they constantly talk in interviews about how much they love LoL, to the media and their literal millions of fans. Riot even put animated versions of Imagine Dragons *into* Arcane. They happily tied themselves to their brand, similar to Chrissy Costanza who excitedly hosted Arcane pre-launch events.
Riot has this band with millions of followers that is *passionate* about working with them, *passionate* about contributing to League of Legends, and it's obvious to anyone watching.
Blizzard could've had this, no doubt in my mind. There 100% were known artists out there who would've jumped at the opportunity to do for Overwatch what Imagine Dragons did for League. But Blizzard thought they knew better, and the rest is history.

One thing came to my mind: A few year's ago, when I was more active in the Kpop World, BTS's Jungkook used to post a lot of replays of him playing Overwatch. It was clear he loved the game. He probably would have accepted to do a song, and seeing BTS's popularity, it would have been a golden goose for Blizzard. But, oh well.

true, while bands like kda is as popular as it is, then you got pentakill, telle, and their yearly worlds songs. ill always see imagine dragons as leagues OG music partner.
so when i saw imagine dragons make a song for arcane, the show that riot has hyped more than anything they've ever released and announced, i lost my shit. then they officially become part of the league universe lmao, kinda goes to show riot really embraced their musical partnership with imagine dragons.
then you got blizzard, they got dj khaled for overwatch because hes popular, but really theres nothing special about him performing for the overwatch league. there was nothing iconic about his performance, no original song or anything. he was hired out of popularity, and blizzard just didnt seem to consider how fitting he would even be for overwatch, like riot deciding to hire imagine dragons.
blizzard gets nothing out of hiring dj khaled.
while both riot and imagine dragons gain thousands of more fans every time they make something new together
the difference in business strats music wise is pretty funny

As a person who played LoL since S2. If you're playing it out of Arcane hype, I'd suggest Legends of Runeterra (League MTG) for competitive, and Ruined King if you just wanna play a casual game with a different storyline. That way, if you messed up, the only person you can blame is yourself (and maybe sometimes the balance team).
The Ruined King Harrowing storyline is actually just as good as Arcane's current storyline. There were some plot holes, but most of it only affects lore enthusiasts.

@@hiyuhiyu3674 I didn't have an idea about how lore works with tft. The lore with ruined king was about the ruination itself. LoR has vast amounts of lore than can rival the main game.
TFT is like a fun game without any lore in it. Its only purpose is the game itself. There's only items to read, character synergies, etc. It sure is easy to get in to, but does not necessarily portray a story.
I was recommending games riot did that has a significant portion of the lore in it. LoR can introduce them to a bigger world while playing it like knowing that Mel's brother, Jae does not care about succession.
Or Caitlyn's parents will be abducted and an investigation will be led by her that will send piltovan FBI or something down Zaun.

No one ever talks about the way Blizzard treated Reckful. Before his suicide he said the day Blizzard banned him he stopped living. They've historically treated their streamers like dirt, which is one of the reasons Overwatch died even before they pulled the plug on it. Their streamers would constantly get banned for things that no one else thought were politically incorrect or offensive, and most of those players simply moved on to other games. It's not perfect autonomy, for example, alot of League balance changes are focused towards the Eastern market, and Wild Rift DEFINITELY wasn't made for the Western Market (Riot didn't even want to make a mobile League game at first, and that's what led to Tencent making League of Heroes, or whatever that shit was called). Being public and answering to shareholders means that the decisions you make should be in shareholders interest. In a gaming company that can mean being innovative and creating games that sell, as well as doing business that ensures the future of the business. Blizzards actions are not in shareholders interest because of their terrible business practices and governance, pinching pennies doesn't mean you're within shareholders interest. Look at Tesla, they are spending so much money in innovation etc. Them being perceived as innovative and cutting edge creates demand and anticipation for their company which boosts their shareholder prices. Blizzard being seen as a shitstorm is crashing their shareholder prices.

I honestly hope that Riot gets their corporate counterparts straightened out, learn from it and actually improve, continue to build on their IP and provide resources to their devs generously, in order to be the company that Blizzard should've become, which is the Wests' version of Nintendo. There is no way in hell Riot becomes such a giant had Blizzard not shit the bed on multiple occasions. I've been playing the main game since 2014, and I'm all for Riot expanding into new genres and ports with Project L, TFT, Wild Rift, LOR, Ruined King, heck they even managed to buy out HYTALE for fucks' sake. That's literally setting up years in advance to promote their IP expansion into the Minecraft scene. Even genres unrelated to gaming such as music (K/DA, Pentakill, True Damage, while also partnering with Imagine Dragons, Against the Current, 2WEI and Edda Hayes, and of course (G)I-DLE) and even television (Arcane).
Oh, and not to mention having them hosting the 2nd largest (can make an argument for #1) MOBA Esports scene every year. They're right there with Valve and DOTA2. Anyone who didn't watch Worlds 2021 will be reminded that *JAPAN* of all countries (the JRPG/FIGHTING game Capital of the World, where PC gaming is still considered "niche" compared to console and arcade), had an Esports team reach the bracket stage. A MOBA game, *FOR PC* somehow managed to find a way to be represented on a world stage, by a country that has more crane game machines than PCs in pubs.
This is where Riot takes the cake against Blizzard. They weren't settling for cheap cashgrabs and remakes, they steadily improved the world-building of their IP whilst avoiding the pitfalls of regression and ultimately, reiteration. The devs seek to improve and at least somewhat actually listen to their fans (nobody on the face of the planet wanted Diablo Immortal), and they experiment with their game development, which at times it seems to a fault. But that's okay, it pushes the boundaries even further. One champion release (Aurelion Sol) expanded the entire universe of League of Legends a hundred fold.

As for Runterra, I absolutely love the game.
Imo its the best card game out there right now for a few reasons. The biggest being that there is absolutely zero competitive edge to putting money into the game. As someone who indeed has bought their version of a "Battle pass", the card rewards are sub par but the cosmetic rewards are fucking ballin'. You earn better cards by just playing the game and faster as well.
As opposed to MtG and hearthstone which you either have to spend cash or play the game for 6 months to have a barely competitive deck. And to top it all off, not once will Runeterra slam an in game store pop-up in your face, ever. Never once in my almost a year playing now have I gotten slammed with one. The closest they've gotten was when you open the game up, you get a patch notes of sorts that will include patch notes for items added in the store or other "Riot Games" games. Games which I remind you are ALL free.

Everything in this Marketing Monday was super interesting, but I think the one area where hes off the mark is the Riot MMO finishing off Blizzard. That project won't be done for years, and would really have to be exceptional as an MMO to make an impact on the market. The MMO genre within the last decade has really lost its weight in the gaming sphere, and while there will obviously be interest in Riots, it would take it a substantial amount of time to establish itself as a solid game rather just a fad to play for a few weeks such as Aion, Lost Ark, and many other MMOs that only see excitement when they first release.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy XIV is already killing WOW. FFXIV has been in the longest content drought virtually since the games release in 2.0, with the last update being over 7 months ago. And in that time, where there was no new content in the game, there was a mass exodus of WOW players to it, to the point that server stability had to be prioritized due to the stress of it all. Major content creators like Rich Cambell, Asmongold, and countless more brought in thousands of players from WOW and all sung praises on the game. To top it all off, in just two weeks, the games most awaited expansion drops, which will see even larger playerbase growth and generate even more interest.
All the while WOW was releasing updates that just further pushed its players away, offering subpar and rehashed content that many of its dedicated streamers didn't even touch. All of this to say, Riot's MMO won't have a massive impact on the WOW playerbase. The games playerbase is already bleeding out and going to better MMOs, most notably being FFXIV, Guild Wars, and even New World to an extent; and those who will still be playing WOW by the time Riots project is done likely won't be leaving.
Personally, I am not confident that Riot will be able to produce an MMO with any appeal outside of existing IP (though I will be happy to be proven wrong), while there are various MMOs that already exist which pull the rug out from WOW in various ways.

But I do think any discussion between the two ends if the MMO does well. If the Riot MMO is good (and, if we're judging by everything Riot has released in the last few years, it will be, they're on a crazy hot streak), Blizzard loses it's only unique pull.
I say this as an Ex-Wow addict and potentially future Riot MMO addict. This could be the silver bullet

I could be wrong, but I think Atrioc’s main point is about the talent. Because of all the major hype around Riot, it will be really hard for Blizzard to get up and coming talent for their games as the new Riot MMO will pull them away.

    • @NewChiqueChloe
      @NewChiqueChloe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The challenge when it comes to an MMO killing any other is that the momentum required to steal players away from a game they've spent thousands of hours on is immense. On top of that, the sheer volume of content and dev time required to have an MMO capable of doing that is equally as immense. FFXIV is the closest any game has come to killing WoW since its inception, as you mentioned, and it has only been able to just barely start doing that after polishing its systems and adding additional content regularly for half a decade.
Even if the Riot MMO is a masterpiece that blows every MMO players' minds, it won't have the momentum to do serious long-term damage for years after its launch, which itself is a few years out at a bare minimum.

Just wanted to say that the animation of arcane was made by a totaly independent studio named Fortiche, which riot had already collaborated with in the past. The story however was made by riot themselves.

Funnily enough I feel like the fact that Riot is 100% owned by a Chinese company made it more excusable for them to ban people to discuss Hong Kong and other topics…

I think an interesting point of comparison between Riot is Apple. Both companies are at the top of their respective industries, and have a very similar competitive advantage. Theyre never the first to produce an idea (Riot base their games heavily off of existing titles; Csgo=Valorant, Dota 1= Lol, TFT is a blatant auto chess rip off, whereas all of apples products are self explanatory), but when they do make it, they do it well. They examine carefully what works and what doesn't, and from that produce their games. They never produce something really experimental, and I'm sure riots MMO will draw heavily from FFIVX and WoW, but it will produce a good user experience which draws the best out of the games.

Tbh FFXIV is the toughest competition for Riot MMO because how passionate and loyal the community is in that game in fact the game producer even encourages to take a break from the game to play another game once you feel like you have nothing to do in that game

the main reason Toast is fed up with Blizzard is that he got banned on multiple occasions because all he did was "exposing bugs in Hearthstone"
and blizzard banned him for that. so Blizzard is just an all-around "F you" in your face whatever you do even if it means "Helping the company" by exposing said bugs and make them visible for the company to see and improve upon.

Don’t get me wrong: blizz is shitting the bed while riot is taking the cake. I hope some day blizz will return to its roots and I also hope riot will keep pumping out wins.

The point about how they handle the controversy is pretty interesting. As someone who doesn't play and riot or blizzard games anymore when the whole controversy happened at riot I heard about it just from being on the internet but eventually it faded out to the point where I have no idea what eventually even came of it. On the other hand it feels like blizzard is screwing up every week sometimes every day with more bad news and shit coming out about them.

i have been a league fan even though i have only played league one time, and only about one game, and it's just with bots. but i kept going back to league news cause i see all the things they have. characters, lore, splash arts, music, animation, etc.
then to see them slowly expanding, from releasing new games to creating their own animated series, like are you serious? that anniversary video gave me so much hype because all of those made sense to me. they did not made me feel "oh they're doing this cause money" well, we all know money was part of it, i mean they're a company, but i also believe it was a very logical step to take. especially on the animated series part. if there was one thing that i really adore in league is their cinematics and music vids. honestly, we were just waiting for the time riot make their own animated series or movie, and then, boom! arcane

Riot cares more about the runterra IP and they are doing so much to make it into a multimedia franchise. The more quality games they put out in more genres the more and more of a titan of gaming they become. If riot keeps this up they'll have a cultural force like marvel in the making

League of Legends is an incredible avenue to make a ton of engaging content. With the removal of the strange Summoners lore, the stories told can really expand outside of the game itself. Even if you hate league of legends you have to appreciate how well done alot of the lore is for the characters and how well they have branched into different mediums. The animations get better and better, TFT and Legends of Runterra are good games in their own way. The Music they have created is generally to a good standard and faithful to the Genre. and Arcane was an incredible series.
I think the creators at Riot have made an incredible product overall. It is a shame that they dont embrace a wider diversity in character body/ face shapes with the exception being Illaoi and maybe Talliya. It's a shame that they are kinda removing the visually ugly champions and making them cool, check urgot and mundo. And it does feel like they are handicapped by who they are owned by. The Thresh change was terrible for the character. Homosexuality, Trans or even androgynous is generally something they steer clear from which is unfortunate. e.g. Diana and Leona or Vi and Caitlyn are currently only alluded (granted fairly heavly in the latter) to as having or had relationships. A route i believe lore or the series writers want to go down but it is ultimately its owned by a chinese company. I wouldnt be suprised if this is as far as it goes.
