  • 'Little Star' from Nik Kershaw's 2020 album 'Oxymoron' (sorry that I probably pronounced that wrong a few times) - what a song to end up this analysis series!
Let's hope the song one day gets the attention it deserves.

Hi Jonas, you now have a new fan (me) since Nik had an old fan (again me, I'm 55 years old). Thank you so much for your interesting and thoughtful analysis. To be honest, I have to admit that I don't understand 100 percent of what you describe but the portion of what I do understand gives me quite a lot of stuff to think about. You opened up doors for me, thank you! Best regards, wherever you are, from Germany

I wasn't blown away by Oxymoron. I thought The Wind Will Blow was a decent song, but none of the others could take my fancy... Other than "Little Star", which was a hidden gem on this album!
Jonas, you are slowly but surely featuring all my favorite Nik Kershaw Songs in your videos, often capturing my favorite songs from the albums. To name a few: You're the Best, You Might Be, The Riddle (of course), James Cagney, Cowboys and Indians,...
There's still a few favorites left (really, only a few!), including Nobody Knows, Made in Heaven, 15 Minutes, (s)he's Got a Hold on me,... I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

My most favourite NK song is probably "Know how" (on the Riddle album). That track is absolutely wonderful, and as always with NIk : very complex but accessible at the same time. Most of his best tracks are in the "15 minutes" album I think. "Fiction" always blew me away.

On "Oxymoron", for me the most oustanding track is "Babylon Brothers".

Ich verstehe leider NULL von dem was zu erzählst, finde es aber toll, dass Leute Nik immer noch so gern mögen, dass sie die Songs auf diese Weise analysieren 😃

Hi Jonas, long time admirer of Nik's inventive chord sequences and key changes and never thought I'd find such a detailed and enthusiastic deconstruction of them online, so thanks for all your videos. I no longer feel so alone in my appreciation of them!
In case you were worried that you might be running out of Nik songs to analyse, have you found his collaborations with Tony Banks of Genesis? I think it's actually a Tony Banks composition, but I know you'll just love "The Final Curtain" as it borrows a bunch of tricks straight from Nik's playbook. (For what it's worth, Tony's music, apart from his obvious Genesis stuff, has plenty of amazing chord progressions, e.g. "The Lie" / "After The Lie" from his solo album A Curious Feeling).
Also, Nik's instrumental "One Of Our Fruit Machines Is Missing" is worth a listen for its janky rhythm and key changes.

Thanks for your nice comment! One of our fruit machine originally was actually on a list of potential songs, but then didn't make it because there wasn't a real narrative that I could find where it would fit. Nik Kershaw is definitely not done yet, no doubt there. :)

@@jonaswolfmusic1775 Yes I can understand that. It's actually relatively well-behaved albeit with a few interesting ninths or whatever. It's still pleasingly weird though.
For me it's a big shame that Nik got somehow more conservative in his songwriting after The One and Only. I haven't really heard much from him since those first four albums which really made me sit up and take notice!
