Love watching your videos. You've taught me a lot and I'm inspired to build one like this. I like you comical comments as well. Would you happen to have any details on this one and perhaps a material list? Thanks, and please keep making the videos.
I'm a pretty new subscriber and could watch this stuff all day. I had a thought since you mentioned being one person lifting those micro-lams. I grew up in the masonry business working for my father as his hod carrier, so the first 18 or so years of life I spent picking up heavy things. If you had 4 6' scaffold frames that would get you 12' high. If you sat it up at the openings and put out riggers up and spanned them you could hook a hoist to it and wrap the beam with a tree saver strap to hoist them up then steady everything into place. It seems you always have electricity. I don't know it may be too much work and and time a pain to carry with you. I'm 58 and everything hurts and a lot of injuries, so I do a LOT of thinking about lifting things. I have more hoists and lifts in my barn than you can shake a stick at and a tractor with pallet forks and all sorts of attachments. You do nice work, I did some rough in on the other side of the family. Hand in there.
The way I cut the rafters allows me to use the bottom of the rafter as a reference for where to install the fascia. As for left and right orientation, I screw a block to the end that buts into the end rafter.

Thanks for the video. Great job, just starting to build for myself after seeing the quality of work in some jobs I've hires out. Auro Mechanic by trade but always been handy. I'm starting with a chicken coop, the shed, the shop. Wish me luck. A list of must have tools would be great and a price on builds would also be beneficial to the DIY guy pricing out projects.
Look into portal frame openings when you have narrow wall segments around large openings like the ones in your garage. As you framed your front wall there is not enough shear strength and are susceptible to racking. The structure is pretty well protected from wind by surrounding buildings. But given time and other lateral loads it will eventually fail.
@@MyDIYAdventures I would suspect they pass inspection due to not being living space. If you get a project with finished livable space above the garage look into the portal framing the APA prescribes and is in the newer code books. APA website also has a good shear wall calculator that will produce a report showing compliance if the design meets the code.
If you give your order to the lumber yardin the reverse order that you need it. When the guy loading grabs the sheet you will end up with the correct order. The last thing on your list should be the 1st thing you need. Get it?

I think it’s great how you build the walls in sections so they are easier to put up.
I learned that trick when my helper didn’t show up and I was stuck trying to lift a 24’ wall by myself!
gotta love garages! Sorry your elbow was acting up, glad it didn't stop you from finishing!

@@MyDIYAdventures yeah but with it being windy it was nice hearing the music instead of the wind in the mic.
@ Agreed!
Id like to see how you do the split on rafters when you have to use two boards to make it from wall to wall
You mean the ridge board? I just put up all the sections, and if they don’t break on a rafter, I attach an OSB gusset over the seam.
I just came across your build and enjoyed it very much. I’m a new subscriber to your channel. Keep at it man, you do a great job for a one man band!

That’s true that those walls are a failure point, but I’ve never had any issues with them and they do pass code here.

They get easy after a while, I’ve built well over 200 garages and additions over the years.
What I do is build a temporary pocket on one side to slide the header in when I'm by myself. 2 short pieces of 2x6 scrap is a back saver 😅

These joists are 2x6, building code where I’m at does allow split ceiling joists as long as there is at least 3’ of overlap.
How much for all the lumber on this build?
I don’t know exactly, but probably at least $8,000

It gets wrapped in a vapor barrier, then vinyl siding.
