Bach’s collection of Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006) mark a zenith in solo violin writing of the baroque era. Perhaps previously considered sui generis examples of the violin literature, the early music revival in the second half of the twentieth century began to put these works in the context of a tradition of seventeenth and eighteenth century solo baroque violin music, including works by Biber, Westhoff, Vilsmayr and Pisendel. The collection was completed in 1720, during his tenure as Kapellmeister at Köthen. Like Bach’s previous keyboard collections, such as Das Wohltemperierte Clavier and Orgelbüchlein, it is probable that compiling the collection of Sonatas and Partitas was partly for the educational purposes of violinists, although the possibility they were performed during Bach’s lifetime can not be dismissed.
