You have the best gemstone videos on the internet. You are a brilliant teacher and gemologist. I am an aspiring hobbyist gem trader and my experience tells me you are the best to watch. If I was to bring some of my collection to Thailand, what would you charge me to certify? I simply dont want to pay 100-200$ per certification, if the stone is a fake... I'd prefer a gemologist to take a quick look then recommend which ones to get certified and valued. Thankyou for all your knowledge.

Forgive me if I call you a professor. The truth is that I learn from your videos like this one. Since I have no knowledge on the subject but I like to collect. As I see it, it is a way to invest in this area. To me, it seems much better to invest in this type of material than to have money in the bank.
Thank you so much in keeping your mind open in wanting to learn. I agree, knowledge is most valuable asset we all have and I do try to learn everyday myself. I am definitely not a 'professor,' though I do believe with more knowledge and discussions people will be better informed and more confident with gemstone purchases. Best Regards, Tarun Gupta, GIA GG
By the way, I have some alexandrites from Russia and with the recrystallometer it gives me 1.748-1.763. My question is, is this range real or does it indicate that they are synthetic? That's how these alexandrites are. The biggest one I have is 17+ carats and I'm about to get one of 36.45 carats. These come from the rural areas. Of course not directly. But this site is the origin of these. I would like to know if with this numbering it can be confirmed that these are genuine or synthetic.
Alexandrite has an RI of 1.745-1.755 and is doubly refractive. This test doesn't distinguish between real or synthetic as chemical compositions for both 'genuine or synthetic' will be the same. The best way to check is to see the stones under microscope to find any clues if they natural inclusions or indications of being synthetics. Of course the easiest way is to send to to reputable gem lab to verify if the stones are genuine or not. Thanks for watching our videos and other compliments. Best Regards, Tarun Gupta, GIA GG
