  • What is Maschinen Krieger Ma.K ZbV 3000?
Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K ZBV3000) is a science fiction universe owned by Japanese Illustrator (his preferred job title) Kow Yokoyama Sensei. It started as a series in Hobby Japan magazine with the creation team of Kunitaka Imai san, Hiroshi Ichimura san and Kow Yokoyama san. The then president of Hobby Japan naming the series, SF3D or “Sci-Fi Sunday”. A play on a possible Japanese pronunciation of 3D and to imply an enjoyable weekend spent building plastic models. Hobby Japan then partnered with Nitto Kagaku Kyouzaisha to produce the first generation of SF3D plastic models and who with Imai-san designed the iconic tan box. Ichimura san wrote the story and Kow Yokyama san did the concept art, illustrations and many of the kitbash and sculpted models as original artworks.
Now Kow Yokoyama Sensei leads of small team of artists and modern kits by Hasegawa Models and WAVE Corporation are currently in production and available as well as a large number of licenced toys, garage kits and goods. There is also talk of a movie!
I was most fortunate to work inside the Ma.K or Maschinen Krieger studio for many years as one of the creative team working on the core content and decided that it might be a cool idea to share with you an insider’s perspective on what Ma.K means to me, how it seems for the creator Kow Yokoyama Sensei and how it felt at community events in Tokyo interacting with some fans whose passion for the genre stretches right back to the early 80’s when it started. Working with the creator is fantastic but also learning from people in the community who were involved when it was first released was extremely cool and rewarding too.
I hope this video helps for you to further understand the genre and I appreciate you watching.

Still amazes me how this 'niche' of the scale model world has such a worldwide following. Thanks for this upload, Lin.k, I thought i knew the most of the basics about the history of Maschinen Krieger but you taught me some new ones with this. Can't wait for the next installment. Oh and what I absolutely love about the Ma.K community is the sometimes downright hilarious sense of humour in the builds. Stay safe! Greetz, Sticky Fingers

I found it while looking for gunpla tutorials and honestly, your genuine passion and enthusiasm for Ma.k is what made go out and look for one! Not the easiest to find in the US but managed to get my hands on the Friedrick from wave and I'm excited to work on it very soon! (I will definitely be using your tutorials for reference)

I'm a ship and aircraft modeler who's had passing interest in Ma. K for a while but wasn't interested enough or confident enough in my own abilities to try my hand at it. This video provided just the background I needed to fully raise my interest in the brand, and your tutorials and videos have been a massive help in raising my confidence in how exactly to do this sort of modeling. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. Your first hand account is invaluable. I am a Maschinen Krieger noob. I only recently discovered Ma.K. from Fantasy Figures International Yearbook 2021. I was immediately drawn to Ma.K. from this issue, and have been searching for more information. I recently attended Wonderfest Kentucky (no relation to Wonder Festival Japan) and was on the hunt for Ma.K. kits. To my surprise there were quite a few vendors offering them. I picked up my first Ma.K kit (Gustav & Melusine) and really look forward to watching your painting videos and learning more about Ma.K! Subscribed.

I first became aware of Ma.K.sometime in the late 1990s (I think there was an article in Tamiya Model Magazine International) but didn't build my first kit until the release of Wave's Melusine and now I am hooked. I first heard about ma.K from a close mate, a WW2 modeler way back in 2003 maybe 2004.
He had just acquired a vintage Heinrich kit off eBay. When I visited him he proudly held it up to me and said, "this is it, this the pedigree".
It was a combination of everything we both loved about ww2 kits and sci-fi.
For me it encompassed idea's of the reich wunder-weapons program and what might have been, set into the future of ww3, ww4 and the evacuation of earth. Specifically i liked the technology tree while obviously advanced it kinda feels analog with thematic tones of ww2 in certain design elements.
I think it's fair to say after that I was hooked.
Praise for your work Lin.K and I love the channel
I would especially like to learn more about the ma.K tabletop game miniature line that you mentioned your involvement with an Australian miniature company. Many thanks.

This is very close to how I felt when I first stumbled into some Nitto kits high up on a shelf. It looked WWII + Heinlein Starship Troopers... Just blew my mind but the kits looked difficult. Yes I think that miniature game is moving ahead and has some products available now - Slave2gaming - I hope I did not misrepresent myself though, I am not involved at all. Just the messenger and shared their news. Look like fun stuff!

MAK has been on my 'radar' for quite some time. Until I really got into digging it for kits through online sources, I'd only seen the old models in well established hobby shops in North America as assembled and painted pieces in display cases. Now, I see the kits (garage and the re-released injection molded kits) on EBay and Amazon. You popped up in my TH-cam recommendations, and I'm glad. I just got my sons started in Gunpla this last Chrismas. While those are neat, along with the Tau 40K battlesuits; MAK always struck me as a good balance of hard SF and near future realism in the Mecha genre that neither 40k or Gundam could ever match (though the Canadian Heavy Gear wargame/RPG franchise comes very close). One of these days, I'll get a MAK kit! I'm so happy to see that they are once again mass produced as injection molded kits, along with the great garage kit resin assecories! "Collectors Premium" is hard to eat when one is building with a 'shoe string' (small) budget!

First exposure to your content would have been about three years ago; I was building a garage kit sculpt of Battle Angel Alita and looking for videos on rust and weathering effects, and ended up watching your K2SO series. Little while later a friend recommended the PoP Facebook group and I was like "Oh hey yeah that's the K2SO guy from TH-cam." So I started looking at what else you had on the channel when I joined the group, which I guess you could say introduced me to Ma.K? I'd been somewhat aware of the franchise prior to that, seen models at hobby shows and such, but didn't know a ton about it. I think I had assumed, as many do, that the models were from some Japanese media franchise that hadn't made it to the west; cool models from some anime or video-game I hadn't heard of. Was pretty thrilled when I learned that it was first-and-foremost a modeling franchise. (I see a lot of other faces light up at the idea, too, when they ask me about it: "Wait, the model isn't FROM something?" "Nope, primarily just the model itself." "That's AWESOME.") I want to say I had figured that out by the time I found Paint on Plastic, but that was definitely the point when Ma.K for me went from being something I was dimly aware of other people doing, to being something I was seeing quite a lot of, and then quickly became something I started getting into myself.

My introduction to MK was strange. I'm an artist, and i've always wanted to push mechs away from conventional designs.
I'm a fan of anime and manga from the 80s and 90s, particularly the armor designs.
So over the course of my life every now and then i'd find these cool model kits, and be like "i can never do that"
well now i have a job as an art director on a webcomic. Its scifi. And while i have to meet with the demands of the other heads. I started looking for the mech designs i loved. Bingo Bango Bimbo, M.K.
Last month i got my first kit, 1/35 sg prowler and Fireball SG.
Today i got my Raccoon 1/20 in. Building the two 1/35 models, gave me a sense of peace and serenity i hadn't felt for a long time.
Working in art, you constantly have to find new ways to engage with your passion. Especially when you are working for others.
My Boss has been pushing me to work less and get a hobby. She was very supportive of me building models. And does enjoy the M.K. Aesthetics.
As much as I want the project to go harder on MK Designs. I've managed to work a bit of its DNA on combat gear rather than mechs.

I found your channel looking for gunpla videos, building up the courage to paint the kits i've been hoarding over the years. I first came across Ma.K when Medicom made little Kubrick versions of them back in 2003, i used to use this international forum called Ningyoushi which was mostly about designer HK vinyl characters. Anyway I remember trying to find out more about Ma.K and feeling so amazed by the mystery of having no idea what it was, but this feeling that the hobby went very deep and i was just scratching the surface. Now watching your videos has got me itching to find out more. I'd like to know more about the lore, since I find it quite tricky the fetishization that can sometimes come with an interest in ww2 fascist mechanical design. But yeah you've sparked a little fire of curiosity! Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for sharing with us! sorry for my long comment!

Hi Spriken Studios, first of all, thank you very much for the support, sincerely appreciated! I've been working with the TH-cam system but it's not very good, that is the simple truth. The videos are supposed to be visible in your Community Feed. But there is no search function, I can't upload the older extra videos or even tag them to show up. The features are almost none! Despite some challenges within Patreon, it's still one of the better options for us. Plus I link them to my website and gallery site for a visual search reference. Last one, with patreon I also have a Discord Chatroom attached and that is the most amazing reference ever! Hello Jay and welcome. It's quite big in Japan but everything feels small after Bandai. They dominate there in every store. Every hobby store will have their 80% Bandai, then another 10% is probably Kotobukiya. Then "misc" which will be made up of Macross, Maschinen Krieger, Votoms, MechaTroWego and and on and on. The "tail end" is actually a pretty big industry in of itself, truth be known.
Next time we can visit Japan, I will shoot a video of my travels around various stores and share some pointers. Even just a video of my old "Hobby Hood" would probably be pretty fun!
