I got a texture release in 2019. While it looked great, I have thin & fine 4c hair, and it was severely heat damaged by the number of passes (around 5) done by the stylist and had to restart my hair journey. I’m interested in doing it again because I think the treatment in itself is beneficial based on what you’ve stated in the video, but I think it definitely is dependent on the stylist being experienced with the treatment and knowing how to adjust based on the client’s hair type
I got a texture release 9 months ago and while my texture has slowly returned over time it's still not the same. Some areas are even permanently straight. I suspect this is heat damage from too many passes with the flat iron. Can this treatment be done with only one pass?
I had one called Chi Enviro done in 2016 & it made my hair break off badly & fall out ;-/. Should have known better when no one but the stylist who did it was using it
For anyone who may be confused about the technical difference between the Avlon Texture Release and a Relaxer - a relaxer is a product whose active ingredient is a metal hydroxide. The high pH of the hydroxide opens up the cuticle and permanently breaks down and rearranges the sulfur bonds within that make your hair curly. This is not reversible. If you break down most or all of those bonds the hair will be almost straight. If you only break down some of the bonds by processing the hair for less time (or with a weaker formulation), this is known as texturising the hair - this leaves the original curl pattern only slightly altered. The Avlon Texture Release’s straightening effect doesn’t come from the permanent break down of the bonds - the straightening effect comes from the formation of film-like materials within and also on the outer layer of the hair, which is generated by the high heat applied to the product (the active ingredient involved is traditionally formaldehyde, but modern formulations are, on paper, formaldehyde-free). These materials help to keep the hair straight - imagine fully stretching a spring and then encasing it in cement while it’s still stretched - that’s how the active ingredient in the ATR works. Over time, this coating is degraded and the curls can begin to return to their natural shape again. In cases where people’s hair becomes permanently altered after getting the ATR, I suspect that this is more so heat damage, as keratin treatments require a lot of heat to fully process (heat simultaneously smoothes the hair into position and activates the coating that will hold it into place). The scale of heat damage that someone may experience from frequent high heat usage will vary depending on the health and integrity of the hair being subjected to it. If you get an ATR with hair that is already compromised, you have a higher chance of experiencing damage. Additionally, how frequently you wash your hair will greatly impact how long your curls stay stretched. If you wash your hair once a month verses once a week, then your curls will take a longer time to revert, because the coating is being broken down slower. If you’re a few months out since your last texture release and worried that your hair isn’t reverting as it should be, take a break from direct high heat for a few weeks (flat irons, curlers, round brush dryers), do a clarifying shampoo every 1-2 weeks for a month or two, along with a deep conditioning treatment each time. This will remove any remaining coating that might still be keeping your curls stretched. *Edit:* correction made regarding my explanation of the texture release - texture release-like products *do* go into the hair strand, whereas before I said that they only work on the outer layer. Still, the bonds are not permanently broken down during that process the way a relaxer would.
I really appreciate how you talk about both ATR and keratin treatments here. I've only recently learned that the at-home keratin treatment I use is actually using the same main ingredient as ATR uses. So now I'm thinking these words don't always mean something different. 'Keratin' seems to be used for both formaldehyde based and non-form. based products for one thing. Agreed 100% on your explanation of how both work, coating, not penetrating and changing chemical construction of strands! Also yes, I can tell the little 'damage' I did was from applying to many passes with the hot iron in my 4A region, which only my 4C/4B regions could really handle. Same product everywhere, just needed to vary application of heat based on the section of my head. It's not significant, but I can definitely see how people using higher heat and more passes than I did could really give themselves heat damage, not keratin/ATR damage.
@@IndigooceanOrg So sorry to hear about the damage! And I agree - despite all the different names, the active ingredients are generally the same (and honestly, there’s still some clarity needed on how ‘formaldehyde-free’ these actives are, since I think they still technically work by releasing formaldehyde on some level, but how significant it is health-wise still remains unknown - if there is a risk, then sadly it’s more so to the stylists who may have to do them on a daily basis, and not so much the client who’s only exposed 3-4 times per year). In terms of how the different products claim to work, I really think the main difference is in the product’s instructions - a product that promises greater long-term curl retention may recommend only 5-7 passes per section at 190 C/375 F on a coily hair type, but then a product that promises ultimate sleekness may recommend as high as 10+ passes at 230 C/440 F! And I can’t imagine curls surviving that process very well. Research into how keratin treatments actually work and how they affect the hair is still ongoing, so we may learn a lot more on what may cause damage during this process. I actually edited my original comment since I learned recently that keratin treatments do work within the hair and not just outside (but still don’t permanently change the structure - just adds a material within that helps keep the hair straight along with the coating on the outside).
@@meemee24739 thanks for the follow up and clarification. Thankfully the damage is being repaired by a combo of k18 and living proof. You can barely tell where it was anymore. But I will definitely adjust my methods in a couple months when I repeat the keratin process.
You are exactly correct. I get this same system on my "4c", fairy knot prone hair for about a year (3xs) and I've experienced better length and moisture retention, and ease of at home maintenance. My hair reverts when wet, so I can toggle styles. I love it!
@@voguehaven5154 Yep. After about 2-3 months of maintenance (shampooing, etc.) my coils start tightening right on up as before. The coils are much more loose in the beginning, but I promise you: the more water over time, the more reversion over time. I'm at the point where I'm going to train my hair. I THOUGHT I wanted to relax it, but a 3 month reup on this system and a stylist-performed flat iron has given me what I wanted without those chemicals.
@@voguehaven5154 my hair was 4b/4c and now it’s 4b. The heat setting matters if you want your curl pattern the same. Do 410f max w/ 3 passes. I did 395F. The 450F w/ 7passes is too high for most ppls hair in my opinion
I can definitely see a difference with the texture release on this ladies hair. Even when it was wet! She is such a pretty girl and her hair is gorgeous ♥️
We have this for years in Brazil, it’s kind of a keratin treatment but the base is with aminoacids, much safer then the keratin one once this uses formaldehyde. But you have to take good care of the hair woth hydration treatments. Many people think because it looks shiny it doesn’t need and after many times doing it the hair can have breakage. The ones that I have found here that offer the services don’t seem to have a good understanding as to what it actually is and does to Afro hair. I have done extensive research on the texture release system by watching several UK stylists channels (including yours) and read information on the Avlon website. The stylists here thinks it either a keratin treatment or a texturizer. So I guess I will never be able to have it done unless I come to London. I love your channel
Let me just say that as a woman with thick and coarse hair - that I REALLY like how you wash and separate in the bowl AND how you blow dry! It didn’t make me cringe from watching someone pull and yank - in the bowl - or even after for the blow dry. Really enjoyed that.
I’ve used it once this year and loved it. I’ll probably use it again in the winter time when I want to silk press my hair. I have 4ab high porosity hair. I probably won’t use it but once or twice a year. It’s been so helpful especially with detangling my hair and length retention. It really depends on the individual’s hair.
I’ve had it applied by a master hairdresser and Avlon Texture Release certified trainer for the past 4 years. My hair is 3c, porous, and very fine, and I live in a hot and humid climate. Since my hair is so fine, it takes a very long time before it wears off. Heat activates it. My hair will have new growth before it wears off. I once went 8 months between applications. By then, all of the Texture Release had worn off my hair. Bottom line is It’s not a relaxer and results will vary based on your hair type, texture, porosity, and how often you apply heat.
I have 4ab fine, high density, coloured hair and had mine in April. It has helped me retain length because I get about 80% fewer fairy knots. My curl pattern has definitely loosened but not enough to worry about. I see it as a type of keratin treatment. I'll definitely keep doing 1 or 2 a year as this plus Olaplex has been helpful for my growth.
I do love the idea of this. Many tighter coiled hair struggle in retaining length because moisture doesn’t get all the way down to the ends. This loosens but still keeps texture. And if they wanted to keep their hair in this state they could get max 3 times a year vs a relaxer that completely strips the hair of all texture and you have to do it every time you get new growth or risk breakage. Def a good option
I’d have to disagree. If it were so easy to have manageable hair, women wouldn’t be ripping out their edges with with extensions and wigs or damaging their curl patterns with heat. Protective styles serve 2 purposes: 1. to protect the hair from elements and over manipulation and 2. to make the hair manageable while not manipulating. These are things I’ve never had to consider while relaxed and my hair thrived. Natural hair is high maintenance, plain and simple. Some women choose to go that route and it’s fine but others choose not to and that’s also fine.
@@jollyrancherchick Natural hair is not high maintenance once you get familiar with and use the products that work for your hair. Problem is some ladies are striving for looser curls and "definition" when that's not the hair type a lot of us have. They don't take the time to get to know their hair and end up with extensions, wigs, or treatments like the one shown on this video because they're still believing that natural hair looks unkempt or ugly if it's not in smooth, defined curls and waves.
@jollyrancherchick Obviously you're not familiar with using natural ingredients on your hair. 4 years ago I treated an elderly lady's hair with natural products; BTW, I'm not a hair stylist. Man, her hair was *really* hard to comb in the beginning! 😫😩 She had the *exact* same hairtype like the woman in this video. But after a while, her hair became soft like butter. So yes, natural hair *can* be made manageable with natural ingredients! 😏
It's a conditioning treatment that coats the hair. I used the Prismax brand. you really don't have to be careful with applying it and straightening the hair sets it in place. It was advised to rinse a percentage out but I left 100% in after learning how much was needed at the beginning of the application. My hair would dry quicker, but it didn't fight much against humidity but I still love the product. 100% recommend.
Thank you, Jennifer. I love giving this service to my clients. It’s a very good product if apply correctly as manufacture directions. Beautiful, Jennifer and thanks again.
I had just ONE TEXTURE release last September and i regret it. My hair looks damaged i think she straighterned it too much im just going to keep trimming and treating it until i get my hair back because i aint big chopping, i do need to big chop anyway because its nore milder than relaxer and that line of demarcation ( because i hate it) is actually not too bad 😂compared to how a relaxer would be i also got a very mild texture release they told me how straight i want my hair. My hair has not gone back natural either its take time so think about it before you do it
This is a fantastic video and I agree with everything in it. I’ve been getting texture releases for 18months now and I love it. Unfortunately I went to a very reputable salon who heat damaged my hair this time last year so I am in the process of cutting the ends slowly with my new hairdresser. When done well this is the best treatment for my hair.
Her hair is beautiful. There are many styles she can do with her hair, they just might not be the ones she like or it takes to much of her time to style. Either way, her hair style was nicely done 😊
Kindly tell your client that I said she’s beautiful ❤ and she looks like an Ewe (an ethnic group) here in my country and they’re the most beautiful people here in Ghana 🇬🇭. So gorgeous 🤩😍
Way back in the day... There was Vigorol!! Anybody remember that... I wish it were still around... You washed your hair with it.. now.. It smelled like sulfur 8 on steroids for a few days... But once it was pressed.... Only need to use maybe once a year.... Or every 6 month... Same thing!!! It only released the texture.... Ain't nothin' new under the sun.
Here come the shamers.. making women feel bad for doing what’s best for their hair. Who said they don’t like their hair. Women have options. It’s a great option for people who wear their natural hair but desire more manageability. This can actually help to retain growth because of less manipulation.
I just realized this week that the texture release has the same main ingredient as Answr at home keratin treatment. I'm curious now about these terms and whether they really mean a) a consistent thing, and/or b) the same thing sometimes. Lovely results!
Hi Jennifer Cynthia, Could you tell me is it safe to use this product if you have bleached blonde hair . As I’ve been blonde for the past six years, and natural. But I’m starting to miss having straight hair. Can you help me ?
I’m just leaving this comment because I watched tons of videos on TRS before I got it done and I didn’t see anyone say anything bad about it. I thought I had finally found a product to answer all my prayers more manageable hair, easier to detangle, etc. But I have breakage and shedding nonstop since week one. So for anybody who thinks this is the perfect Treatment you can get it’s not. I don’t think it’s heat damage because my hair is not straight or wavy -it’s still curly but the breakage has not stopped two months out
Brazilian have the same products for about 10-15 years now. But theirs can be layered and so either one renews it before the first one is completely out of the hair and it becomes more straight or wait the 3-4 month and do it again on virgin hair
@@JenniferCynthiaHair I am not sure that we are talking about the same products! They have straightener like Brazilian Keratin straightening, then they have passo a passo, which will loosen definitely the curl pattern only if used too often and will even straighten it over the span of a year or so, and then there is what they call Keratin treatment which is different from what American call Keratin treatment and it is exactly the same steps. A shampoo to have the hair squiky clean, then a preparation that must go under the dryer, a rince that doesn't take all of the product away but about 80%, and then it has to be ironed with or without blow dry, depending on the desired effect. Heat reactivates it and for those who want it curly they just do not apply heat after it again. The hair must not be washed for about two days and only with salt free and sulfate free shampoo and the effects will last 2 or 3 months ☺️
So is it basically what Beautiful textures straight texturizer kit is? I remember using it twice in high school & it sounds like it works the same as a texture release 🤔
Keratin ? What I want to see is the UPDATE and how it returns what the medical side effects are fibroids Like a relaxer nerve or damage to the hormones ?
Ms. Jennifer thank you for all this detailed information. This definitely has me wanting to learn and see more!! With that being said what heat protectant products do you swear by?
Hey, thanks for your comment. There’s a lot of things that could be contributing to breakage that may not necessarily be related to having the texture release. It’s best to talk about it with the stylist that did the treatment for you.
You still must deep condition your hair. I do aphogee 2 step every month after treatment. It doesn’t protein overload and my hair is so much stronger and thicker.
My hair is exactly like her or even kinkier, I feel her when she says it's not easy to style. Too much work. I wish I could get a texture release but I believe no salons offer this service in France :'(
I use to have something similar in 2017 the hairstyle use to mixed relaxed medium 1/2 of the product, 3/4 of hair mask a little be off moroccanoil oil treatment mix well but i decided to go natural in 2018
I also have 4c hair. Getting micro locs was the best thing i ever di, and I'm able to maintain myself so not hairdressers yay. This just looks like a texturiser which I've had so many times in my life that eventually just damaged my hair over time and made it fall out - so yeah I'm kinda jaded. Hopefully this product is really different.
“Not as permanent” soo it’s still permanent, “not as harsh” that means it’s still harsh. It’s still a chemical curl manipulation, just with less chemical strength.
I believe a texture release is way worse. I got one done for my hair a few months back. I was okay with the results, I had to do mine a couple times to get something somewhat satisfactory. Anyhow, so I wanted to do something else different with my hair after about 2-3 months. I did a relaxer and I’m talking super strength and it felt like nothing happened to my hair. I’ve done relaxers, wave nouveau and worn my hair just straight ol natural kinky curls and have had excellent results and hair growth. I will never go back to a texture release, something’s way off about that process and what it really does to your hair.
@@JenniferCynthiaHair thanks! also last question, im getting it done purposely for my birthday (want to get a leave out) im going to have to wash my hair twice after getting it done initially now (once for the dye & another before the install) i guess my question is, is that going to affect the straightness of my hair, im going to blow it out and straighten it obviously but will my leave out have higher chances of reverting since i washed twice?
A texturizer permanently loosens the curl pattern, but the Texture Release only changes the curl pattern for a few months (permanent changes that people report from the process are likely caused by heat damage, not any chemical in the Texture Release system).
Not ya'll renaming the protien(keratin) treatment thats been around since the 90s? lol I think tht the keratin treatment had formaldehyde in it though, or something like that so stylist stop offering it as a service. Anyhoo, nice try with the rename😅
Have you had a texture release or something similar? what was your experience with it?

I do love the idea of this. Many tighter coiled hair struggle in retaining length because moisture doesn’t get all the way down to the ends. This loosens but still keeps texture. And if they wanted to keep their hair in this state they could get max 3 times a year vs a relaxer that completely strips the hair of all texture and you have to do it every time you get new growth or risk breakage. Def a good option
Kinky hair can be made manageable with the right products, especially natural ingredients.
I agree, I love using Ayurvedic herbs on my hair 🔥🔥
@@inesclaudia8390 💗💗🥰🥰
@jollyrancherchick
Obviously you're not familiar with using natural ingredients on your hair.
Her Shrinkage is real .. ❤
Thanks for your comment
Would love to see you do a texture release with a wash and go one day on 4c hair
Good idea, thanks
Thank you, Jennifer. I love giving this service to my clients. It’s a very good product if apply correctly as manufacture directions. Beautiful, Jennifer and thanks again.
Finally! I always wondered what this was. Her hair looked amazing at the end!
Glad you got some understanding about the texture release
This is very interesting. I've never heard of a texture release before. Thank you for sharing this new information!
It is actually good, I am from the uk and its the best thing that I have done for my 4c fine hair (curlfriend) lol
Hahaa, I love that!! 💛🤗@@JB__.
My hair has not gone back natural either its take time so think about it before you do it
This isn't a relaxer.
Seems permanent.
It's better to treat your hair with an egg wash, condition it and then silk press your hair. It will give nice results as well.
If the stylist uses heat over 410 degrees, you will get heat damage. The problem is stylists and customers using excessive heat and multiple passes.
It sounds like the damage was done by the heat styling as opposed to the product. Hope that your hair returns to its former glory.
Thanks how long do you have to wait after relaxing hair to do texture release please
Thanks how long do you have to wait after relaxing hair to do texture release please
Sounds like another name for relaxers.
Look up the chemicals and compare.
Not the chemicals 😬
What is the chemical in it?
I still have my curl pattern. My hair is just .... softer and more manageable
Well it’s not because a relaxer will never fade/revert back to natural aye? ☺️
I’m thinking about getting this done, her street results are beautiful
What a great head of healthy thick curly hair 🎉
This is some ASMR glory!
Oh yes, my mom and her sister were big fans of it 😅
@@MissNolver2 If they still made it.... I would be on it.... This looks okay but... I'm sure it's very high dollar. Vigorol was on the shelf😉
@@cynthiahillian Yeah 😁
I had that but I think it thinned out my edges BUT my hair stayed straight for a few weeks...wow that's a throwback!
I read the term “texture release” and instantly thought relaxer.
Her hair is beautiful 😊
Here come the shamers.. making women feel bad for doing what’s best for their hair. Who said they don’t like their hair. Women have options. It’s a great option for people who wear their natural hair but desire more manageability. This can actually help to retain growth because of less manipulation.
I just realized this week that the texture release has the same main ingredient as Answr at home keratin treatment. I'm curious now about these terms and whether they really mean a) a consistent thing, and/or b) the same thing sometimes.
Lovely results!
Thank you for this video! I absolutely want a texture release.
You are so welcome!
Gorgeous!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You did that. Beautiful results ❤
Such beautiful hair. I want to go wash my hair now just to enjoy my curls after having it straight for a week
Hair looks fine like it is!
Boohoo lol she likes it, I love it!
That smile at the results ❤
This is beautiful!
Hi Jennifer Cynthia,
Could you tell me is it safe to use this product if you have bleached blonde hair .
I don’t think it’s heat damage because my hair is not straight or wavy -it’s still curly but the breakage has not stopped two months out
Was that a track you put in her hair
YES IT WAS A PIECE OF TRACK SHE PUT IN HER HAIR
TAPE INS are what they are called
Is it just a texturizer? Or the mildest form of a relaxer?
Ficou linda. Parabéns. Rj Brasil ❤.
Brazilian have the same products for about 10-15 years now. But theirs can be layered and so either one renews it before the first one is completely out of the hair and it becomes more straight or wait the 3-4 month and do it again on virgin hair
You’re right, but they’re too strong for some Afro hair… especially if one wants to keep their texture and not loose then completely
@@JenniferCynthiaHair I have 4A-B and still have my curls but I will see if I can have access to the Avlon in Switzerland 😅
So is it basically what Beautiful textures straight texturizer kit is? I remember using it twice in high school & it sounds like it works the same as a texture release 🤔
Oh, I’ve never heard of that one
Just beautiful! 🤩
Beautiful Results 😍
Absolutely😢Beautiful.
Thank you so much!
*Fyi, These products are usually fine, as long as you dont mix with permanent color, thats when things het tricky.*
Beautiful work, but what happens when the client sweats? Do the roots puff back up?
Not immediately but yes new roots will eventually come through (noticeable at around 8 weeks) and revert faster than the rest of the hair.
How do you maintain it on a day to day basis?
I'm confused, her hair looks exactly the same after?
It was edited clip from the beginning of the appointment. How can you not see that?
I got this texture release 2 months ago. I love how my hair looks and feels but I’ve been noticing some breakage. Any tips?
Hey, thanks for your comment. There’s a lot of things that could be contributing to breakage that may not necessarily be related to having the texture release. It’s best to talk about it with the stylist that did the treatment for you.
You still must deep condition your hair. I do aphogee 2 step every month after treatment. It doesn’t protein overload and my hair is so much stronger and thicker.
Thank you. I did a protein treatment and a cut a few days ago. I’ll keep an eye on it to see if it improves. 🤞🏾
Steam treatments, trims and protective styling, that's what I have found that benefits me :)@@mandysway9729
Jordan Davis 21 got Some but
Would love to understand the difference between this and olaplex
Olaplex repairs the bonds broken by relaxers, bleaching, curly perms, & permanent color.
I love it ❤
My hair is exactly like her or even kinkier, I feel her when she says it's not easy to style. Too much work. I wish I could get a texture release but I believe no salons offer this service in France :'(
qui qui baguette
May want to get the euro star over to London for the day to get your hair done in the future
She has beautiful skin
I use to have something similar in 2017 the hairstyle use to mixed relaxed medium 1/2 of the product, 3/4 of hair mask a little be off moroccanoil oil treatment mix well but i decided to go natural in 2018
Real nice
So should I still wash/ condition my hair every week or week in half with this in ???
❤ Lovely smile lovely shine. Great job.
how do you feel the texture of the hair with gloves on?!?! 😅
Beautiful 😍
Thank you! 😊
This sounds exactly like a Brazilian Blowout. Even the amino acid base.
It’s very similar
But u don't cover Brazilian blowout right
Where in England are you based?
So is the texture release the same thing as hair Botox?
Very similar
@@JenniferCynthiaHair ok I’m going to try hair Botox. I have been doing keratin since 2020 but damaged my hair from coloring it.
There is hair botox?
Well done ❤
I'm think about silk pressing but i found this video so I'm going to texture release it instead 😊
Go for it!
I didn't notice what the texture release did!
Heat was applied
“Not as permanent” soo it’s still permanent, “not as harsh” that means it’s still harsh. It’s still a chemical curl manipulation, just with less chemical strength.
Are you in London? Where is your salon?
Yes it’s in Hackney
Nice vid!!!!
I love you so much thank you for all
I believe a texture release is way worse. I will never go back to a texture release, something’s way off about that process and what it really does to your hair.
so i can dye my hair jet black before getting this done?
I recommend you do black a week or so afterwards to avoid fading
@@JenniferCynthiaHair thanks! also last question, im getting it done purposely for my birthday (want to get a leave out) im going to have to wash my hair twice after getting it done initially now (once for the dye & another before the install) i guess my question is, is that going to affect the straightness of my hair, im going to blow it out and straighten it obviously but will my leave out have higher chances of reverting since i washed twice?
Ficou lindo 😍😍😍
Real nice
Where can I get the iron and the hair dryer?
How often can i Use the System?
Hello my friend how you doing?
What happens if you your hair doesn’t revert?
Nothing happens, the hair is now a different texture if it doesn’t revert.
Sounds more like a keratin treatment/ kerastraight system
But keratin doesn't straighten hair
It's a hair texturizer. That's nothing new!😊 Or is there a difference?
A texturizer permanently loosens the curl pattern, but the Texture Release only changes the curl pattern for a few months (permanent changes that people report from the process are likely caused by heat damage, not any chemical in the Texture Release system).
I MISS YOUR VIDEOS
Aw long time. How are you?
@@JenniferCynthiaHair I’m good! Much love always from Canada!!!

this is a vigorol from the '70s.
Not ya'll renaming the protien(keratin) treatment thats been around since the 90s? lol
I think tht the keratin treatment had formaldehyde in it though, or something like that so stylist stop offering it as a service.
Anyhoo, nice try with the rename😅
What happens when it rains
Keratin treatment under a patentable name.
please. 😞
I have a new hair goal
Liked her hair better natural. 🤷♀️
Well, God gave you your own hair to with as you please.
Texture Release System? In other words, it another name for that System would be a RELAXER? HHMM 🤔❤
Exactly
No, that’s why it’s called something different lol
