Thank you. I have a AQHA gelding that got acute laminitis as a late 2 through 3yo year. No founder. Dr Heiti was with us from diagnosis through the 9 months of recovery. Soft ride boots, casting, eventually Formahoof was used to regrow sole….he is barefoot sound now. He was tested multiple times for insulin issues and does not have that issue. He was never overweight….lanky even. After laminitis was over he had horrible skin and got fungus looking crud. Cellulitis twice. It finally clicked in my head to allergy test him. While we will never be 100% sure, oh man does he have allergies! Corn, oats, soy, Bermuda, every single bug tested for….I mean it was crazy! He lives on Timothy hay and pellets now and full time turn out. It has really changed everything I ever thought about Feed and Feet.
This is the second mention I have heard recently about broodmares being insulin resistant during their last trimester. So my question regarding broodmares and my gelding - how do I best feed a forage only diet and make sure their minerals are in balance? Some companies recommend ‘ration balancers’ but I have found almost all pellet feed has been sprayed with Soy as a binder. The soy cant be fed to my gelding and I wonder about its consequences hormonally in general for horses as it is in humans. I feed Mountain Sunrise as they do not spray Soy on their hay pellets. But developing foals and my gelding long term - is there a need for ration balancer for minerals when fed quality forage? Is access to mineral block or loose minerals enough?
