Vorg visits Ippo after he decides to make a comeback. Meanwhile, Ippo is desperately training to evolve the Dempsey Roll before his next title defense. Vorg agrees to a sparing match as a favor in order to show Ippo the Dempsey's greatest flaw...THE COUNTER

I love how this fight starts. Volg throws out White Fang while Ippo responds with a Gazelle Punch. Both of their "best moves" during the time that they had their match, but they're merely just the opening moves for the rest of the fight. It shows how far the two have come since then

I love that Vorg doesn't even do this out of any kind of spite or animosity towards Ippo. Vorg just knows Sawamura is a monster who might just kill Ippo if he gets the chance to land this counter.

Vorg was my favorite character when he first appeared because of his root cause for why he boxed, his mother. Then when he came back, this scene sealed the deal. Without Vorg, Ippo would never have realized the fatal flaw of the Dempsey.

+Showgingah Well, he did end up winning the world IBF junior lightweight championship which is on par with the WBA, WBC, and WBO championships in terms of prestige, and Vorg did that just 2 matches after this training session. Granted, he did have Hama Dankichi on his side to train him once he went to the US but it makes sense that he'd get that far considering his skill. Honestly, Ippo was out of his league at the time, and even currently in the manga he's still lagging behind Vorg and other boxers, though he is getting closer and closer to reaching the real goal...we'll see what happens if these chapters can come out faster.

I never thought watching Ippo got knocked out cold was gonna be so satisfying and epic.
This shows how much of a badass Volg actually is. Not the fact that he knocked Ippo out, but the way he campe up with the counter. Sawamura basically studied the Dempsey Roll for hours until he found the perfect method do defeat it. Volg on the other hand thought it could not be countered when the sparring started and still tried, cause he wanted to help Ippo. The moment he realizes how to defeat it is while the Dempsey Roll is being used on him and he actually manages to come up with a counter before the DR ends and realizes he's able to connect his hit first even if he holds back. Guys a genius.
Ledge Buoy I don't know if I forgot about a scene or something, but I always thought that the one thing that made Sawamura a very potent and dangerous boxer was his ability to adapt and read to his opponents in a matter of a few seconds. I honestly don't think that such a technical and tactical boxer like him had to think about it that much, as the guy has shown multiple times in the anime and manga that, after he's seen a move, it won't work again. Sawamura really could've gone very far in that aspect as well.
Though in terms of technical boxers, Vorg's technique is off the charts of course.

DAMN! Ippo still has a VERY long way to go, especially if he wants to reach Martinez. But at least Vorg came in to show him the flaw of Ippo's best move. If not for that, Dempsey Roll 2.0 wouldn't be a thing. Thank you Russia, for birthing The White Fang! But speaking of Vorg, I hope to see more of him in the show's coming seasons. He always had a certain thing to him that made him shine more than Ippo, at least to me.

shogun harlem When up against more careful boxers (Despite being a total demon Sawamura's boxing IQ is quite high) handling a straight forward boxer like ippo is VERY possible it just takes big balls. When ippo gets close he goes for the body; its predictable, which is while he only uses it if hes positive he'll land it (I bet you noticed ippo doesn't miss his liver blows but he also doesn't use them all the time). And even if it hits, that 3 move combo will only work if the opponent is too tired to avoid it. Ippo has relied on the dempsey roll because its literally like a tornado; once it starts your not getting away till one of you is finished so it makes more sense to start out with that when your trying to finish your opponent off. But that's just a theory...

4 things you must realize, 5 if you want a spoiler
1. Vorg just got back to training
2. They were taking this fight seriously
3. He didn't fully follow threw with his last punch, as told to the coach post fight, and still got trucked.
4. Vorg was holding back in their pro fight due to becoming friends with Ippo before hand, AND was not fighting in his usual style, since he was out of country, they needed him to be an in fighter instead to his usual technician/out boxing style. They even discussed how Ippo would have lost had Vorg been fighting his usual style without holding back. Ippo has had a handful of fights like this.

sirplayalot11x i've read in wiki ippo volg went up to 130 but did not know he became the world champ. i watched the entire anime till last ep from the rising season. there's a little while, i dont remember everything, though, appearantly, the super featherweight division in this anime sucks. how can volg jump up and in two fights wins the world title ? fuck mike shitty eliot ! put volg to fight martinez ! he's gonna get fucked in seconds. even volg at 130 catchweight and martinez at 126 martinez would kick his ass easily ! mashiba and volg lost for ippo and switched of weight class. they ran away. i don't like ippo's outside ring fear of mashiba, he looks like a coward, but inside the featherweight ring ippo would kick his ass again and again. ippo is a badass. he is recognized is some ways, but still underrated. the only man who stopped him was date, a former world number one contender at 126. ippo has conditioning to become the world champ. he just need to tell that girl his feelings, certainly she also likes him, so that can help his psicological. he should had confessed before the sanada fight, he is 20 years old, its starting to get ridiculous. and ippo's mother is a bitch.

Mashiba and Volg didn't switch weight classes to run away, they were both having trouble with their weight management and just bumped it up a bit, Mashiba a second time in fact after the Sawamura vs Mashiba fight, he is tall, and thus has more natural weight to deal with. And it wasn't just two fights, Volg had been fighting in a lot of American Matches to even get to where he was able to even challenge Mike, which he was chosen not cause they underestimated him, they feared him, but they rushed the fight so Volg would have little time to prepare, but still came out on top. Yes, Ricardo Martinez shits on everyone ever, except Takumura, but at that moment and time for this clip and for their first meet up, Ippo was indeed weaker, he honestly got lucky that Volg had a soft side and was forced into an in-fighting style since they needed him to draw a crowd, which all this they mentioned as well in the Manga.
My favorite part of the manga so far is Volg going absolutely nuts with the white fang for his belt

Btw , Volg shows you how much he is better. He could have won against Ippo anytime. Not just ippo but also Sendo and Date. Volg is the man. Always loved him.

That's the 2nd time that Ippo was defeated by a world champion.
Personally, I think this fight was pretty balanced. But I think if Ippo would have used the same potential as in the fight against sawamura, he would've won.
I mean if he would've used the dempsey roll 2.0 he could've dodged that counter and throw in a very hard punch. And also this was just a fight where Vorg was SUPPOSED to show ippo the weak spots of the dempsey roll.
He didn't even think of 2.0 until after this fight. If he already had 2.0 there would have been no point to this lesson in the first place.

Vorg is a more classy fighter, sure. But Sendô is also. People think of Sendô as "not good" because he lost to Ippo twice, but people should also remember that he's better ranked than Ippo and Miyata now, destroying Mexican fighters on his way to the top 'including Ricardo Martinez sparring partner and gymate'. His next target is Gonzalez, and I'd bet he will beat him. Vorg is World Champion, and I love him, but he would not have been if Martinez was the Champ. Ippo and Sendô are targeting a far bigger fish.

Isn't it silly, a move that supposedly requires an enemy to back up is countered by simply taking a step back.
+warriorfire8103 good observation, is not silly though, normally when you are in a fight and your opponent forces you to step back, those steps are short, you dont leave their reach, but if you step back to counter, that step is longer, thus putting him in your reach, this is especially noticeable in boxing and taekwondo, the last is what i practice, the easiest way to visualize those steps it is to imagine that someone is pushing you back, try it and tell me :)

Plot twist: Volg was just trying to help ippo to avoid sawamura's counter punch
They skipped the part where Komogawa describes Volg as a natural outboxer and is better than Ippo, Sendo and even Date if he will use his natural style.
