I totally agree with those who pointed out that painting at those cold temps are generally not recommended for good adhesion and especially with the rainy weather that you have had. I also recognize that sometimes you can't always wait for warmer weather when you are trying to get things done. We should educate, not berate. Not all of us are experts. Thanks for your channel!

With painting metal, temperature and humidity have a lot to do with proper paint adhesion. I only paint metal above 70°, low humidity, full sunshine and no forecasted rain for at least 48 hours.

In the paint stores they'll have a tool called a 5 in one or a 9 in one that works well as a scraper, a paint can opener, a nail remover, it has those round edges you were looking for and has a sharp cornered edge for poking or digging into crevasses. Also you want the paint to "cure", as latex paints generally dries to the touch within a few hours but takes 24 to 48 hours to cure. When doing exteriors I always wait 48 hours before doing a 2nd coat and make sure I'll have 5 days of dry weather before even starting to paint. I don't want customers calling me back 6 months later and I have to do it all again. Hope some of that helps!

The danger of not stripping the paint one way or another, is that water will be left behind some of the paint and cause corrosion, as well as long-term bubbling of the paint layers. You are really faced with having to sand and scrape off the affected areas -- quite thoroughly. Then wait for plenty of time to paint and for it to dry before there is any more rain.

Paint takes 30 days to cure but is usually film stable after 7 days. However that is at a minimum 50 F and 50 % relative humidity. Anything below that temp or above that humidity will take longer.

I once made a total novice DIY mistake when painting a bathroom. I bought paint and painted it, it looked great until the bathroom got really humid a couple of times and the paint started blistering and sagging on the walls. That was when I learned that you don't put regular paint over oil base paint without some sort of undercoating. I guess we all live and learn.

  • @richardjones5255

In my experience, paint and water do not mix well unless they are really rare special formulations. Even dew or humidity, can affect the results, so I can see you face some strong challenges with the container. However, I like the way that you have a moment or two of introspection, then you pick yourself up and start over. Your children and dogs are wonderful.

Here's what happened. You painted in cold weather. The metal may have been dry when you sprayed but over night the metal got cold and condensated thus developing paint blisters because the moisture got trapped between the metal and paint.

Why would the condensation happen below the paint? The moisture that would condensate on a cold surface would be drawn aout of the warmer air, and that air would've been above the paint. How would that water vapour get underneath the paint?

I painted my garage and its wood but I did the same mistake.. It was late in the year and was dew on the ground every morning. When I woke up the next morning the paint was dry but had water bubbles under it just like that. I left it alone till spring cause I was upset lol. Came back and scraped it just like you did and brushed primer over it then rolled a whole fresh coat and its been fine since. But I think it was something to do with the temps and the moisture in the air.. Good sunny warm weather is best to paint for sure..

Just a few things that I think can help: 1) The big box stores sell extensions for the paint sprayer that will allow you much more comfort while spraying in most conditions and they allow you to cover a bigger area without moving as often. 2) They make a spray tip for your pressure washer that spins like a high dollar Jacuzzi jet.. It is a MONTER TIME and BACK SAVER and it makes hitting every square inch FAR BETTER and because it works so well, you spend much less time power washing!!! 3) Before I massively ruined my back, I worked rebuilding power plants. One thing I got stuck doing was sand blasting huge steel ducts for boilers. (I MEAN MASSIVE)!! We used a "POT" Sand Blaster with a towable air compressor.. We rented the works and bought the sand. (Black Beauty). It will cost you a few hundred bucks, but it will save you weeks of prepwork inside and out... Quite often we reused the same sand after it had been collected on visqueen.. (plastic sheet). Prep work is the hard part and the most needed thing to be done right for every longlasting project..

That's fine and well but just like a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, a paint job will only protect the substrate where it has sealed properly. That's why caulking is an essential part of a paint job. It helps prevent moisture from getting behind and up under the paint job.

  • @MacBailey

Wow that was a setback. A couple of suggestions. Get an extension wand for your airless sprayer of 18 to 24 inches. They are only about twenty bucks, and you can stand up without bending over on top, and can paint most or all of the sidewalls standing on the ground again without bending, and only a stepladder to reach the top of the sides. Also scrape off any stickers you can before painting, even if you have to use a heatgun on them. I painted the two containers I use for storage 10 years ago and the painting went well, but the paint did peel off with some of the original stickers. It may also be worth getting some clearcoat and putting a top coat to help with the longer term sun fading.

  • @CindyMac4104
    @CindyMac4104 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I would just sand it…I started writing that in when Kenzie suggested that in the vlog. You can’t use water for everything. Sanding sometimes is the way to go. I know, it’s a pain in the keister- but, I am sure that you both could just take turns between watching the kids and sanding. 😊 You should be proud of yourselves…the viewers are! ❤ JDI!!! Take a little break and go away for a few days, you deserve it…after you finish that painful task! There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourselves! JDI! You can paint later when it’s warmer and when you have a few good weather days in the forecast ahead.
Spencer- (or Spenser)- do not put so much pressure on yourself, seriously. Pick two different days…schedule them apart. The first one Dad will be the first to go out for his massage and then Kenzie and the kids will pick him up for lunch or dinner. A month later, do the same but switch roles for mom. This is a suggestion…why not try.

Try Sherwin & Williams metal latex it's an industrial coating maybe prime whole container temperature and moisture are essential to watch paint soon as air gets above 50 °F hurry so you'll have all day for paint to dry surface might flash under paint may not dry as metal is cold.

Why have you been applying your paint under adverse weather conditions? Never apply paint unless you will have a prolonged stretch of good weather. Both wet and cold weather will lengthen the dry time of all paint products and cause failures. This goes for both water based and solvent/oil based products. At this point you should wait for warm/dry weather and then prep the surfaces by sand blasting, repriming, allow to dry, and then apply finish and allow to dry well in good warm weather. An alternate prep would be to lightly scrape or wire brush. But in all cases allow all coats of paint to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. The colder and/or wet weather should always be avoided when painting at anytime. Painting just isn’t one thing that can’t be just slipped in between short sells of poor weather conditions at anytime. At least not without adverse or potentially adverse problems in appearance and durability. Best of luck with fixing your problems.

One of the biggest challenges seems to be thermal transmission and moisture when it is cold outside and warm inside. I've resolved most of my thermal issues, yet the corner conditions seem to still be an issue.

🦋Love the color by the way. I think you need to train your daughter how to use the Camera before she gets too used to being in front of it. She’s delightful! Much love and many blessings to everyone for all your hard work putting these videos together and taking it on this journey.

Wrong time of year to paint such a large area outside. Again when manufacturer say touch dry in so many hours, think again it takes days to cure. You wouldn't spray paint your car and take it through a car wash the same day.

A headlamp would be easier than holding the phone in one hand matey. I use a unit i got from AliExpress which has a big COB LED and a spot light in the middle - works well, cost almost nothing. Ended up buying a second one for my partner to work on her motorcycle with (because we are old and going blind!)
I use a small (18kw) LPG jet heater to dry off paint faster on both concrete and wood during winter - should work really well on steel.
I am sure you two know it will be awesome in the end - given we all have seen you overcome so many obstacles before...

I know you're anxious to get a lot of work done on the new container guest house while the Texas weather is cooler, but I'm wondering if it would've been better to hold off painting until you have better (warmer, drier) weather and longer daylight?

Y'all haven't had the easiest of winters that last, what, 3 years. There's a reason the building industry boons when the weather is warmer...and dryer. Could you install the windows and door now so you could work on the inside? If you could then you could progress while the weather is wet & overcast. On a bright note, I bet your water tanks are really filling up.
Kenz - Good job! Love the interplay between the two of you & the kids & pups. Adding things like that help really personalize and round out the story you're telling about a family building their lives in Texas. Folks started watching your channel because y'all were building an unconventional house, but they got emotionally invested and stayed. It's really about the relationships y'all have and how y'all support each other through things, together. Remember your premise, according to the title, is Life Uncontained, not building a container house, right? Your lives are so much more than shipping containers. Producing the vids is an opportunity to think outside the container, er, box... As you know, adding 'artsy' stuff - visual and audio - can support specific feelings you're working to get across. Play with ideas for that & be open to possibilities. They can expand your horizon. Peace, Kevin

Wrong time to paint especially in the winter time, if it's not a controlled environment and has to be painted outside forecast and temperature are huge factors. I'm not a pro but applying primer, touch-up, and protectant coat that's a good 3-day cure with no rain. Cold is your enemy when painting almost anything, your best bet is to paint on a good warm clear day like 70-80 degrees with mild humidity with a clear forecast night and day for a week. Other people may have other opinions but this my observation, good luck with the project.

I was given advice and it sure came in handy.....if you are covering a wall with different colors on it, use a dark primer, then paint white or light color. Scraper, use a scraper.

Well dar of coarse it didn't have time to cure before the rain and the cold temp of the metal wouldn't help either.. Why worry about painting the outside right now, work on the inside till it warms up. You put a video out every two weeks, so that will take you into and past spring.

You can’t do outdoor painting when the temps and humidity are outside the manufacturer’s recommendations. With a rapid temperature change you may have had condensation form under the paint. The best way to resolve this is to sand blast the whole container. If you don’t get the improperly cured paint off nothing is ever going to stick properly.

  • @wirelesmike73

There is one more possibility for what caused the water bubbles behind the paint. The moisture in the paint along with the fast drop in temperature could've caused condensation beneath the dried surface. If the surface dries faster than what was contacting the primer, the moisture becomes trapped underneath and can cause the dried surface to lift away and form bubbles. Those bubbles between the paint and the primer can catch excess moisture trapped beneath that fills the empty space as the temp drops. This happens where the paint is most heavily applied because the paint cures slower beneath the surface where it doesn't have contact with the air around it, and the colder it is the slower the paint underneath cures. The weather was simply working against you, and it's just not the best time of year to paint metal out in the elements.
Waiting for warmer weather would be your best bet. But, that's not always an option, I know. But, it's better to be behind schedule than to have to do so much extra work as well as use more materials than originally planned or budgeted for, as well as being behind schedule.
It is a cool color, though.
