I remember sitting in a coffee shop in a mall on my laptop and overhearing a (local emirati i presume) speak utter disrespectful trash towards the Filipina girl serving coffee.. Was a real eye opener.

I went to Dubai and stayed for 5 days, the first day was fun you know looking at the skyscrapers then I went to Dubai mall and when I was done from Dubai mall I had like nothing else to do it wasn’t fun there is no history in the city and no people from that city. After my 5 days in Dubai I visited Lebanon and Syria (yes I visited Syria and it’s nothing like it’s portrayed in the media) and it was the most fun trip of my life that I will never forget. In Beirut I saw the rouche rocks when to zaytoony bay (don’t know how to spell it) I then went to jounieh bay and took a Cable car up the mountain where I climbed the harissa and visited the our lady of Lebanon church it was beautiful and the view was I can’t even describe it. The next day I visited Baalbek where I saw the ancient Roman buildings 🏛 and wow it was amazing. On my third day I was in the Byblos harbour and the history there is just wow. Then on my fourth day it was time to go syria I drove up to tartous and stayed in the Porto hotel, it was like I was in Europe the view of the Mediterranean Sea was spectacular the restaurants food was excellent. My second day in syria I took a boat to the island of arward where I saw fort of arwad which was amazing, after I took the boat back to tartous I drove a bit north to the holiday beach hotel and wow it was the nicest hotel I have ever been too. I roamed around the pool then went to the beach at around sunset and relaxed until the fourth day where I drove to Latakia and jet skied and stayed at the Afamia hotel and resort which was amazing. Then on my fifth day it was time to see Damascus the oldest continuously inhabited city. I stayed at the Sheraton which was beautiful and then visited the old city I went to kan zaman restaurant which which was the highlight of my trip is Damascus. On my second day in Damascus I visited the ummayd moscue (probably spelt wrong) which was the oldest place of worship in the world and wow I then went to the hill to see the view of Damascus at night and it didn’t disappoint then after 12 days I drove back to Beirut and had only a few hours to spare so I roamed a lot of the city then headed to the airport where I landed back into Dubai (layover) then back to Melbourne. The trip to Lebanon and Syria was a trip i will never forget and tell everyone about till the day I die. The trip to Dubai was boring and I wish I stayed in Dubai only 2 days and saved the rest for Lebanon and syria.
That's amazing, the way the media portrays certain places is very unfortunate. The middle east is genuinely one of the most beautiful regions on the planet in terms of the culture and people but the media and politics are creating a divide that's getting bigger and bigger

Well I am an Emirati here and everyone that is talking about Nature or culture..The nature of the UAE are the deserts and mountains (Can’t really find mountains in Dubai though) you can find beautiful mountains in the other Emiratis such as Fujairah and Ras al khaimah while you can find deserts in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (the deserts are actually beautiful) and about culture..You can find plenty of culture in the UAE don’t forget Dubai is only 1 city in the whole country..While you see skyscrapers in Dubai and the capital Abu Dhabi you can find fortresses Bedouin tents and more on the other Emiratis...The emirate of Sharjah is well known for the culture while the city of Al Ain has the most culture out of every city in the UAE as it even is a UNESCO world heritage Dubai is only a small part of the bigger picture And I know everything about the labor in Dubai and I know that it is totally my countries fault and I take 100% responsibility..I myself couldn’t even believe that they were treated in this kind of way I hope there will be an end to this
My dad told me about this. Workers are told that they would be better pay so they move to Dubai to work. They can't afford to live properly and have to send the majority of their wages to help family at home. Dubai is built off poor labour.
Is Dubai the city Utopia that Plato wrote about? of course not It's a city that has faults like New York, As for the workers, they are not slaves. They can leave and return to their country at any time. The problem is with the agents, and by the way, they are not Emiratis. but from the same country from which the workers came, And better salaries that are in their country, otherwise he would not have come to Dubai as an expatriate from his family. Note: I am an Arab, not an Emirati, but I wanted to be fair. And by the way, I hate the rulers of the Emirates, and I hate the Dubai scheme, and I wish it was built like Singapore (a city for the community) or as a historical city in the Arab style.

One of the only BBC news reporters that doesn’t have a depressing tone with every word even when talking about the problems of Dubai. That’s how all news should be reported.
Dubai always struck me as a "gilded culture." It's dressed up in glass and gold to conceal the oppression and rot. If ever it adapts a working democracy, I'll be glad to visit, but not a moment before.
I think because of demographic, it's a country where 90% are immigrant/tourist/foreigner. And path to citizenship are difficult if not imposible. So i guess that's why they try so hard to advertise and made a country to become a hub of international citizen with different culture, but ofc the ones with lot of money.
Went to Dubai earlier this year, the place is one of the most amazing places I’ve visited in terms of wealth, building structure, beaches and the cleanliness... but there is just something missing, there seems to be no atmosphere unlike cities such as LA, New York and London. Hmm
Its about not giving the benefit of the doubt to its residents. Its not about not giving people a citizenship, its about they're treated as guest or outsiders depsite playing a big part in the city's development. There are certain pockets where this 'atmosphere' exists but considering the majority of the people are non-Emirati, non-Western, mostly Asian and some African expats and aren't melded with the local cultures as such (they have to live among themselves, the Emiratis are richer and live in the suburbs instead so barely any interaction in between). Because of all this, most retain their unique cultures like the Filipinos or the Indians, most are part of the labour or working class, so their areas too aren't classy as you would have in the Burj Khalifa per say.
I'm a native of a Los Angeles suburb and I say Dubai is exactly like L.A. in that it sprung up seemingly out of nowhere to become a world-class city in a couple of decades! I get it, but give Dubai a chance and look a little closer. The same thing is said about L.A. as we compete with cities that date back to the Roman Empire (Rome, London, Paris) and older cities in our own country (New York, Chicago, San Francisco), but I can point out Los Angeles's history. A lot of it just started before it got famous and big.
As someone who has been living in UAE for 16 years, dubai is a place to visit once in a while, its not grt for living unless your rich enough, I prefer sharjah more, it has a more comfy and warm environment, it may not be as attractive in terms of luxury to dubai, but its more homely, dubai will always give u this fast paced and dry feeling if u spend more than a week It also saddens me how UAE is practically known as dubai, ppl r rarely aware of the fact that their r 6 more Emirates that r equally as gud just in their own diff ways
@Khadr Trudeau bright children? So some children are simply born to be doctors? Education is a lot more than "looking for bright kids". A proper education system gives all kids a fair chance and only a few European countries do that. Most places expect parents to pay for children to have a decent education, while the rest a left to wilt in failing public schools.

I remember sitting in a coffee shop in a mall on my laptop and overhearing a (local emirati i presume) speak utter disrespectful trash towards the Filipina girl serving coffee.. Was a real eye opener.
Yes some are like that, but most Emiratis are nice to them (I am Emirati and my whole family is, in my school, too). Even family friends. They all donate and speak to them with a nice manner.

Hmm
How about stepping away from downtown? There are 6 other cities yknow, even Dubai has some natural landmarks which are incredible

The same thing is said about L.A. as we compete with cities that date back to the Roman Empire (Rome, London, Paris) and older cities in our own country (New York, Chicago, San Francisco), but I can point out Los Angeles's history. A lot of it just started before it got famous and big.

Dubai is a wonderful 22 nd century city.
My daughter lives and works there, she is British and loves the place, feels very secure and when I visited, the place was magnificent.
No sign of any trouble makers, friendly international neighbours and a quality environment.
toonmag50 bullshit
@@jaydbluxurycars2502 tf ive been living in dubai for 16 years now its really nice the most safest place ive ever been at
That's exactly why your daughter loves the place. White people are treated with a lot of respect more than others. In both the social gatherings and the work place.
lmao try asking the filipinos, pakistani, indians, etc then you will realize its a hell how they treat them
Its a modern slavery there
Dubai is a city of gold without freedom

Economic meltdown in Dubai has been going on in full swing. Not the right time invest in Dubai.. tourism wise one must visit. A unique city
@ZionHillCalling let me guess terroist or slaves are one of those reasons right?
BBC, please do more snippets about other countries like these please. Keep them coming!
Everyone is crying about how the poor are exploited for the benefit of the country as if their countries don't do that. I'm not from Dubai but seeing you crying in this way is really pathetic.
