  • In this video Darren Magee discusses Avoidant Personality Disorder, often confused with social anxiety due to the avoiding of social situations, is part of the Cluster C group of personality disorders. What makes is it a personality disorder? What are the common beliefs and behaviours associated with it?
(low self esteem, low self confidence, fear of rejection, low threshold for criticism, panic attacks). Also looking at the criteria for it as set out by DSM 5.

The videos I make are topics suggested by you the viewer. Feel free to suggest any mental health or psychology subjects you'd like me to cover in future videos. Just a reminder though, these videos are not a substitute for support from a mental health professional.

I like how you avoid using intellectual psychobabble - very easy to understand and well presented

Even two years after this diagnosis it still astounds me how much I recognize myself in everything you mention.......... I had a good career in the arts going, and I dropped it all because I couldn’t do it anymore. It is not easy to find myself doing my unfulfilling parttime job - where I can happily avoid human interaction... but not fully - and knowing what I ACTUALLY want to do, but feeling like my mind could never deal with it. I feel inadequate, because even when I start thinking of trying again, my brain just tells me people would realize I’m actually not talented at all, and it would all fall apart anyway. This disorder is no joke, and I can imagine many people with AvPD feel like they are wasting their time on Earth but they don’t know how to change. Therapy has helped me see the patterns in what felt like a mountain of chaos, but I still have the disorder. It is a challenge... but luckily I am up for those :).

I think this is one of the disorders many people have but don't know it. It could be easily confused with a generalised anxiety

I'm sure this can be often confused with a general anxiety disorder - I'd be keen to hear you talk about the differences

In real life instead of referring to descriptors it makes sense to want to avoid people who like to attack n ridicule

How do you differentiate between APD and social phobia?

Could you make a video on someone with AvPD and the best forms of therapy for them, and what you mentioned about willingness to take risks? I have been trying to not shy away from discomfort, because I know it is vital for me to grow and get stronger, heal and learn. To move ahead in my life. But I would really appreciate some insights into this! Thank you :).

But if someone with AvPD first acknowledges there might be a problem, and then resolves to visit their GP to explore the possibility of treatment, what are the chances that they will be referred on for therapy, or at the very least assessment - especially with the current workload that the NHS is under at the moment? And, if they are fobbed off on that first occasion, will they go back and insist that they need help, or feel discouraged and revert back to their usual avoidant way...???

I dont think anyone likes me and so ive been alone for 10 years. I have extreme depression and bad self-harm thoughts everyday because being rejected and alone hurts too much. Im trying to see a therapist but cant

What disorder might someone have who is incredibly undisciplined, lazy, and self-indulgent to the point that their health is failing, and at the same time is unbelievably inconsiderate of others?

Is it typical for AvPD’s to avoid physical contact with others? I mean avoiding physical contact like hugging, kissing and sex?

This is a basic idea of this disorder. It’s not about fear of feeling shame. It’s about the shame and embarrassment you cause others by your inadequate being. It’s not self oriented it’s other oriented. Basically sorry for making you endure me and my stupid self, I won’t do it anymore.
