Kwaharaba Art Gallery and Cafe

The Travel Malawi Guide team had a chance to chat with Thoko Liwimbi the Managing Director of Kwaharaba in Blantyre City, where we talked about the arts industry in Malawi. We talked about Kwaharaba art gallery and cafe, the effects Covid on the business and the reasons why arts is not supported.

Malawi has a lot of talented artists that produce beautiful art; from paintings, carvings, sculptures, masks, drawings not forgetting music and poetry. However, most of these artists do not have a platform to showcase and sale their art. This is the reason Thoko Liwimbi decided to create a hub for them and named it Kwa Haraba as she herself has so much love for art.
Kwa Haraba Arts is located behind Phekani House in a tranquil and serene atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of the street within the commercial city of Blantyre.
The space is open to several stages that are ideal for exclusive live performances. Every first Wednesday of the month, Kwa Haraba hosts live poetry and spoken word performances by Vilipanganga Poetry Movement.
On Saturdays, children are welcome to dance lessons and yoga; and later, patrons spend the afternoons listening to live acoustic music. Traditional dances, live band performances, children’s birthday parties, celebrations and serene space for private meetings is also offered. Kwa Haraba is also a selling point for Malawian music; CDs at affordable prices.
The bookshop is a Shangri-la for connoisseurs of literature, from classics to contemporary writers of the world, and a whole Malawian Section offering novels and works of poetry from Malawian authors.
The space has a restaurant offering alternative dishes with fresh juices, coffees, assorted teas and alcoholic beverages, vegetarian and vegan diets also on the menu.
