I’m Colombian and I LOVED both Encanto and One Hundred Years of Solitude. If you loved this one, you will LOVE “The House of the Spirits” by Isabel Allende (Chilean) which follows a family as well through magical realism. You’ll love it! Also, the mass murder in the book actually happened in Colombia, it was called the “Banana Massacre” of the Banana Fruit Company workers in Cienaga, Colombia in early 1900s. Lots of real events happening there.

Agreed! So glad you said that, not many encanto review covers how marquez's 100 years of solitude might be the biggest inspiration for encanto. I mean, colombia, a big family living in one house, abuela as a matriarch, and yellow butterflies? Totally screams marquez!

Maybe someone has already said this, but actually Gabriel García Márquez considered the translation into English by Gregory Rabassa of A Hundred Years of Solitud better than his actual original novel written in Spanish, so no wonder why you have liked it so much 🥰

Oh when I watched Encanto I was instantly reminded of 100 years of solitude and decided then to get the book, prior to that movie i had an idea about the book bc one of my friends that told me alot about it. I'm glad I am not the only one to see the connection ^^

If you like a hundred years of solitude, you should read the house of the spirits by Isabel Allende. The book follows a couple of generations of women and it is a magical realism as well. It is a wonderful book, hope you give ir a try!

wow when I was watching Encanto I had thought some of the elements seemed vaguely Márquez-esque (yellow butterflies, big family, the Macondo-like town etc.) but I didn't know for sure that it was actually inspired by 100-years! I wish more reviews could mention that... you have the prettiest edition that I have ever laid eyes on🤩so glad you liked it, it was one of my favorite books of 2021. great video!!

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I loved reading it right until the end and then I got mad at it. I was so angry I had trouble sleeping the night after. The idea that fate is inescapable, that our natures/fates doom us and there's nothing we can do about it makes me mad. I just kept growling at the last Buendia to get over themselves in those last pages. I just felt such helpless frustration at how bleak the world-view described to me was. I just don't want to see the world that way, you know?

    • @soonerorlater888
      @soonerorlater888 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Of course it's bleak, because that's how bleak the latin american experience is, sadly. Garcia Marquez is basically exposing the monumental latin problems of generational trauma, lack of self reflection and misunderstanding of progress. The last aureliano had a chance of breaking the neverending cycle of solitude by not naming his baby like the family traditions, but guess what, nobody learns anything in this story.
Even though it seems badly written or maybe too cynical of an ending, it really is the most acurrate and real portrayal of the latin american mindset and culture.
You have to remember that Marquez was a Journalist first, writer second. And his politics were heavely influenced by the call for social chance that the cuban socialism represented. Therefore, his books were a criticism of the social and cultural loops that he has seen and experienced, disguised as pseudo-fantasy tales.
This book is a wake up call for latin america (and also the rest of the world) to break their cycles of pain.

Thanks so much for the screenshots of actual pages! I’ve been trying to decide which copy to get. I had only seen photo shots of the cover of this edition, which I love. Since it isn’t available in US, I have to have it shipped internationally from Book Depository. I wanted to be sure of my purchase since return would be costly, if even allowed. I was pleased to see it appears to be a nice font, good font size, and good spacing between and around the text. I am ordering it along with a beautiful 50th Spanish edition from Vintage Español.😊 I plan to read them side by side, while listening to Cien Años de Soledad on Audible. (I am Latina, but my Spanish is not fluent level.)

Loved when I got to the line that explains why the book has this title. Úrsula Iguarán was my favorite character.
As a Colombian, it makes me happy when people from around the world read literature from my country.
I read the One Hundred Years of Solitude in Spanish years ago and have always wondered how's the English translation. ¿ Is it good? I ask because sometimes a translation can ruin a really good story.

I unhauled this book a couple of months ago without reading it... Now I feel that maybe I made an error!! Although it seems that the way you read it, in really long sections, is probably the best way to read it if it can be confusing.
Either way, really great vlog and the edition you have is so beautiful.

May be some things make lost in the transcription. I read this book in Spanish and it was brutal for me! I totally understand why is a classic and you liked it, but it is a complex novel.
In Latin America today many people live in "solitude" is common find families with that structure and the repetition of the names is also very common.
Gabriel García Márquez was raised by his grandparents and aunts, from whom he heard many stories that inspired much of his literature, especially this novel.
Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy you read it. It's a wonderful book more realistic and historical than magic for me.

Thank you so much for this reading vlog! It genuinely made my day better💖
One Hundred Years of Solitude is a wonderful book, I'm so glad you've read this! The writing style is what made me invested into the story in the first place. I love this feeling of a river-like, flowy narrative. Also, I somehow wasn't confused by the repeating names. You were talking about depth of the characters. Guess that is why I remember them well even months after finishing the book (read it in summer). Thank you! Your videos feel like warm, chocolate cookies and rays of sunshine lighting up the entire day💛

Thank you so much for the vlog. It is so great to see someone actually include the book so viewers can see it - and see the inside. For some of us with neuro/migraine symptoms choosing an edition that has good page layout (as well as looking pretty!) can be hard. Especially when booktube reviewers tend to ignore the actual edition, so you never get to see it close up. So massive thanks for that! I've subbed!

I recognize it is a well written book but when the story is so much like your own family it depresses you a bit, the whole hopelessness of the Latin American experience.
