  • Just a quick little video I decided to throw together to teach ya’ll a bit of what I know about mapping cell towers so you can go ahead and try it yourself and hopefully make some money. If you have any questions or want me to do another video showing how the pictures turned out or to throw it into a 3D mapping software let me know and I’ll do my best to get to it.

    That is a very tight space to make orbits in, and there are so many obstacles----trees, power lines, fence, etc. Good job!

      Thanks! Once you start getting into it a tower like this is actually pretty easy and you look forward to it. The difficult ones usually have tall trees that stick into the compound near the tower or large powerlines on some of the taller towers. Those tend to be the worst since it's very hard to see where your drone is in reference to the powerline; Sometimes it seems like youre well above it when you really arent lol.

      @@egorchorniy346 I personally got the job through word of mouth since a classmate of mine got the job. But he actually got the job just looking around on local drone facebook groups. We were subcontracted out by a bigger contractor, so we got to start our own LLC's and the pay was much better. But you can find a job working directly for dish network and other service providers, however it just doesn't pay as well. You can find those kinda jobs on linked in, indeed, etc. Another classmate of mine recently got a job through Exon doing similar work, but just inspecting windmills, and power facilities instead, which is a bit easier.

      I'm sorry, but that's all I have for the subject! Really the best thing to do is to go out and try to practice on your own, with permission of course since all cell towers are on private property. If theres anything else you'd like me to cover, I can try to make time for it. I majored in UAS in college, however I don't do as much work in the field right now since things are slow and mostly just gig work.

    Good info.
    Are you still using the P4 v2.0 drone for this? And ... are most of your tower jobs okay with the P4 v2.0 ... of equal {video} quality? Finally, what is the average fee for a basic tower job? Thanks, Chuck

    Very helpful. What 3d modeling Software do you use? Also how do you get the red boundary lines in the video?

    • @aaibrad
      @aaibrad  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you get hired to do these usually the company that you're contracting for will have their own proprietary software that you upload your pictures to. The red markings are the standard threshold markings in your settings.

    Are the towers powered down when you do mapping? If they are on, do the tower signals affect the drone?

    • @aaibrad
      @aaibrad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The cell towers are always on since they are an essential service and they definitely do affect the drone and cause rf interference as well as electromagnetic interference. Some drones can’t handle the interference and will not work or will be too dangerous to operate due to the possibility of fly aways and loss of controller input. The only drone i can say for certain can handle it is the dji phantom 4 pro v2. Even those can have some issues at times depending on how many antenna arrays are on the tower.

    lol anything more than 30 ft away from the tower is semi useless... you want to fill minimum 2/3 of the frame when flying RADs. Also use either litchi or drone link vs DJI software

    The pictures with the sky in the background, are they used in the 3D model? I thought the sky in the photos for creating a digital twin is not good.

    • @VintageChiefKeef

      In this case they are put into a separate file to model the antennas only, so it’s ok.

      Hi Darren, when it comes to cell towers this is the best information I'm able to provide! The only thing you can really do is get some practice in on a real tower, with permission from the tower owner of course, to hone your skills. If you or any of your friends have any other questions for other drone topics, just leave a comment and I'll try to answer them or cover it in a video free of charge to the best of my abilities. If I can't answer it I can try to refer you to a source that can.

      Best of luck! Just an FYI it's going to be hard to get consistent work in one single area and most of these jobs require you to be able to travel across the nation as a contractor. I got lucky and was able to do a contract that was in my area. Once that was finished though I decided to move on since I wasn't willing to travel on my own dime and live in a hotel a majority of the year despite the great pay.

    How would a new guy get started in doing cell tower inspections? Is there a school that teaches this?

    • @aaibrad
      @aaibrad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first step in the process would be acquiring your Part107 license. This is what will allow you to fly drones commercially and there are a ton of free online courses and material that can help you study for the test. Personally just using the FAA part107 practice exams are what helped me pass since the practice book is word for word questions that will be on the test. So if you can study those and pass the practice questions, you will be able to pass the test no doubt. From there you would have to go out online and try to look for jobs on that are hiring for Cell tower inspections. I would try formal sites like indeed as well as forums like reddit or facebook that might be able to point you directly to someone who is hiring. In the mean time try to find a local cell tower and talk to the land owner to get permission to practice your flights around the cell tower. The property around the cell tower is most likely private property, so be sure to abide by your local laws and regulations when practicing.
