MAGIC Folding Rolling Staircase for Loft

- We needed a new set of stairs for the storage loft in our DREAM SHOP. To make the most of the space, we needed the stairs to roll like a library ladder, as well fold in half and be hoisted up out of the way. We were able to create a simple wood loft staircase from inexpensive materials found at our local Home Depot in one weekend.

You and Bryce are awesome! Do work out a hand rail. I have a lift up stair case in my shop and have a hand rail on one side. So much more stable up and down the stairs and worth the effort to help prevent a fall.

Great job! Our winches in the turkey sheds have 2 gears, fast and slow, maybe they are a different type. Channeling Izzy is always a good solution though.

Your ladder system is super cool. It might solve a problem with my serious vertical challenges in my shop. (I'm short...real short, y'all. )
TIP: (A bit oversimplified) The thing about pulleys is they help distribute and divide the load to make them easier to lift...the more pulleys you have, the easier the lift. If you add an additional pulley to the ceiling, your load will need about 1/2 the pull it currently requires. So, add a handle (like on a rope swing) to your rope and it will be way easier on your hands.

I would recommend adding a secondary pin because if your hinge fails it would collapse rotating at the pin. Just a recommendation. Love the design and I’m using it in my shed. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing this video. I’m glad you mentioned handrails as a future addition. Perhaps adding additional black gas pipe, aluminum or vinyl wrapped EMT. If your power driver isn’t available you can probably use a 4-way lug wrench in a pinch. Wishing you and your family a blessed week. Great job and glad you are back! There are a few good videos on TH-cam building an electric lift w a winch and a wood platform w rails on the wall. I’m sure you could reconfigure for your situation. I know, easy for me to say!

I've got a similar problem but additional obstacles. The ladder is directly under a roll up garage door, so whatever I do to raise it, has to be under and clear of the roll up door. I've got a couple prototypes in mind but ideally I want them to lift up completely into the loft area. I've even considered building out the loft to be able to install a standard attic pull down stair but like you, I want to be able to carry up and store large items without being confined by the small opening of a pull down attic stair.
One of the ideas is like yours, a library ladder but instead of folding in half, it folds into itself from right to left. Problem is, although very narrow now, it's still in the way. I'm thinking of some kind of roller system that will allow me to push it up into the loft folded, without obstructing the path of the garage door when fully open. While still making it easy to pull down and deploy. I think I'll make it roll on a pipe mechanism like yours so that the length of the ladder will fit into the path between walls (my storage is deep, not shallow) where there "shouldn't" be anything stored to allow the ladder to be pushed up there. Getting it to pivot from standing to laying at an angle in the loft is still the challenge. But I find these things always work themselves out.

When I was an apprentice a Makita 7.2v cordless drill was about $2k, back when $2k was the average corporate monthly salary so almost everything was slotted/flat head screws. We had big forearms...

The Izzy Swann comment made me give this a Like! I do have an issue with the bolts on the hinges being so close to the edge of the timber. I would suggest sistering not scabbing a block beside the attach points of the hinges.
Adding the boat winch to that staircase was definitely the easiest option and you might find that instead of having the rope going through both pully wheels at both ends you might be able to remove a wrap (so only using one of the pullies at each end) and still have more then enough power to lift the stairs. This would also make it a LOT quicker to raise and lower. I hope this helps 👍

I don't understand that those flat head screws are still being made.
They are also still in the store. But for who then? Nobody buys them and nobody is happy with them.
Those folks (not me) who make reproduction pieces (such as Christopher Schwartz) use the flat head screws.

Thing is, once you replaced the hoist handle and use the drill? You can pretty much reduce your block and tackle (game hoist) from 4 to 2 pullies, and maybe even one. That will speed it up considerably.

Lots of great tips and ideas - thanks. I think a drawback for me is the space beneath the storage needs to stay empty to accommodate the folding/unfolding of the staircase. That's not great for space usage

A Phillips, torx, square drive, or even hex screwdriver also work just fine for driving in eye bolts......one less use for a blade/flat head screwdriver. Some electrical breakers are best tightened with a blade screwdriver......I was too lazy to go get my inch pound torque wrench and the right driver tip to do them to spec.

FYI, that winch should have a high & a low range I have similar winch on my sailboat trailer. You change it by pulling the handle out or pushing in without a load on it.

try adding a tool kit that is rope operated. that will permit you to take items up or down while you below. an extendable basket to lift like the one roofer use to lift up supplies. it could call for a second staircase system. the folding staircase is a great idea. you could add a fan to remove hot air out of the shop.

Simplest way to think about pulleys, is the rope. One rope, one tension. Not counting friction in pulley shafts, the number of ropes segments actually pulling up, is your multiplier. If you have 4 segments pulling, that's 4 to 1. You do the same amount of work, since you pull more length, but he force needed is 1/4. (Some efficiency is lost due to friction).

10:17 if you chuck in a j hook, you can screw in eye hooks really fast with your fancy Ryobi drill or driver.

Pretty nifty. I wonder if it would work if you ran the lifting rope through a pulley near the current lift point, then up to the top of the stairs, then back down to the bottom of the stairs. This would then (I think) fold the stairs as it was lifted, removing the need for a second rope.
It would need a clip on it so that it is removable, as the staircase moves side to side without the lifting rope attached. Great idea though, I was also wondering if there was a better way to fold the stairs.

I would love to see plans! I am building out my attic and would use this! But one complaint that I had was that the audio was a little bad. The voiceover was a little loud and I couldn’t hear the music. But I think it’s awesome!

12:46 Once again, you can operate your manual hoist with a drill chucking the right size socket into it. I know, with all these drill operated options you feel like you need to walk around with your Ryobi holstered all the time. But would that be such a bad thing? EDIT: (oops, you got that one).
The stairs in general and folding in particular are cool ideas. I have been following the progress on your Instagram and the place looks great. I don't know what you guys plan to build/store in that garage (a giant robot?) but I look forward to seeing where you go with that.

Can you connect the lower stair rope to the main lifting rope to make it one lift after pulling the side pins?

The pulleys give a mechanical advantage which is the number of strands on the bottom pulley. It looks like yours is four which also means you have to pull four times as much rope as the lift. Drew Fisher (Fisher's Workshop on YT) uses them because his grandfather left him a bunch. It's a standing joke on his channel.

that knot you used on the yellow nylon rope should work, but isn't the best knot you could use in that application. upgrade to a bowline, which will work better, and is a simple knot to tie.
