Initially yes. But I am a great fan of all things black tapping so have been here before and no doubt will come back again. Love Jeni Legon such a natural star
Of course! Everybody is. What a book! Apart from anything else it has opened up a whole new area of artistic talent to me, especially that of Jeni Legon
The first lady that was shown is an awesome tap dancer. The three ladies sang like three Angels. I was totally amazed when they started tap dancing. They were wonderful.
She was my patient around 2008, Told me stories about Fats who she subsequently toured with. She was just convalescing before jetting off to Finland to be inducted into their dance hall of fame. She made some moves when I was escorting her to the washroom -- Yes, I danced with that woman!
@gta1221 Yes, that's who they are. Jeni LeGon is still alive and almost 96 in Vancouver Canada... she says they nailed their shoes to the floor to lean at the end!
Cantor does blackface in the spirit of 'I want to join you, I want to play music with you. In the part you don't see here he tries to communicate in French, German but finally gets a response with 'Hi Di Hi Di Ho'.
@Chauncey bloom...It's been some time now. But I hope you read this. I was thinking the same. The Peters Sisters from Santa Monica, Ca., expatriated to Europe during the Josephine Baker period. Loved to hear them, although I was a youngster. This was a great period and influence on my life. We were "colored people" then, a name I still prefer. Sad, however, is there's not much history on Florence Mills, another major star before Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday and Lena Horne. Unfortunately, technology was so poor then there are no recordings of Mills.
@@ccaammiinniiito2 Florence Mills unfortunately died just before the sound film era got properly going. One of the last big names of whom we have no tangible record.
In this case it is in the spirit of wanting to join the musicians to play the music they all love. Cantor joined everybody, Jewish, NA, he loved everybody.
Anyone else here because of Swing Time by Zadie Smith?
Bookish Wardo yes!

This should be a movie!!!!!!!!
Khakachu It is a Movie! It's 'Ali Baba Goes to Town' 1937. Lot of fun as are all the old Eddie Cantor movies.
I interviewed her on my radio show a couple of years back. A wonderful lady.
Swing that!
Look at her go! Ms. LeGon lived well into her 90's.

The band leader is a White Man, in Black Face! That is how it went down, back in the day.

Yes, exactly for that reason :-)
Are those The Peters Sisters? I read about them in Donald Bogle's book Brown Sugar, first time seeing them perform, though.
Yes it's in their Wikipedia filmography (the only Wiki entry for them is in Italian though, because of Edith Peters long residence there I guess).
racist

I love that book and yes those are the Peter sisters. Aren’t they fantastic!

Swing is here to stay? I think it went away again.
Nah, its still around, you just have to look for it is all.
I i'm looking for the scene where the dancers fall in a 45° angle, but I didn't see it.
Glenn Kissack start watching at 3:45
The blackface just makes me cringe and I don’t know how my people could deal with this back then!😔
