    WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

The caller right out of the gate made his definition work for the conclusion that he wanted to reach. It would be like saying, "I define healthy food as anything I prefer to eat. Therefore I can prove that all the dieticians and nutritionists are wrong." There's no reasoning with a person who is so profoundly dishonest.
Then of course there's the other matter of claiming to know what other people think better than they know themselves. That's both dishonest and disrespectful, and just a little bit narcissistic. It happens to be a No True Scotsman fallacy as well, which again has a definitional flaw at its core.
In short, there's no reason to give any respect to this caller's claims. They serve only to showcase how bad such claims can be and yet somehow still be favored by people who prefer their internal story to reality.
Meanwhile we have examples like yours which are both logically coherent and entirely plausible according to all that we know of human nature.
Which to believe, your story, or the caller's? Hmm. Tough question.

    6. Present a false dichotomy
    7. Your fallacy is pointed out and explained to you
    8. Claim your opponent is afraid to answer the question/agree with the argument and repeat from step 3 or 6
    9. Claim victory over any perceived mistake your opponent made or over them not agreeing to your fallacious ways or

5:41 - "When people go to court and they argue a point, isn't that (evidence?)"
No. If someone makes a compelling argument to support their interpretation of evidence, that can convince people but it is not proof that what they have argued for is true. But since we can't have perfect knowledge, we may need to accept that argument's conclusion for practical purposes (i.e. use it to convict or acquit someone, or to decide on a settlement, etc.) - but we can't be certain that conclusion was correct most of the time. Our level of certainty is largely a product of the quality of the evidence that supported that argument...
...Which is the point the hosts are trying to make here, I think: The argument is not evidence itself, the argument can be a useful tool but it must be built on evidence.

His confusion and misunderstanding about the point about arguments just shows that he doesn't know how words and reasoning work.
I can make a valid argument with the conclusion that Harry Potter is real, but if I don't have a way to back up the premises, then the validity is just a fun mental exercise, not reality

If I understand it from his other calls, his argument is (at best) essentially:
P1) The "Sovereign" decrees that as evidence of their rulership, everyone will do "X" (ie: "keep to a 7-day cycle").
P2) That decree is exclusive to the Sovereign (ie: "no one else also makes everyone keep to a 7-day cycle").
P3) Everyone (for the most part) eventually does "X" (ie: "keep to a 7-day cycle).
P4) There is no other explanation for "X" (ie: "no naturalistic reason we'd keep to a 7-day cycle").
    THEN
C1) People do X (ie: "keep to a 7-day cycle) BECAUSE the sovereign told them to,
    AND THUS
C2) The Sovereign (ie "the god of the bible who said we should keep to a 7-day cycle") exists.
Fastest defeat I've seen is to point out that Sumerian calendars predate the bible and have a 7-day cycle based on the visible moving celestial bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. A 28-day lunar cycle is also easily divided into four 7-day weeks.
Bonus points for the fact that the days' names are derived from the sun, moon, four norse gods, and a roman god.

Problem is we don't live a seven day cycle. We live a diurnal one, and plants live a seasonal cycle in addition to that (as to migratory animals) and that only matters if we use those plants or animals. We never lived a seven day cycle. We had seven names for days, but the Chinese didn't. So God didn't create Asians????

I wish this would get addressed, even though it isn’t necessarily relevant to crush the conversation. It’s not an “exclusive argument”. The Hebrews were not the first to use the 7 day cycle. The Sumerians used it previously for at least 1000 years.
And better yet, we are not subjugated by the 7 day cycle. We use it out of convenience.
I am the only person in the world with my name, and I claim that my name is my name. And that’s the name that others call me. If everyone calls me that, based on his logic, I have now made a proposition that people will call me by my name going forward. And since people do that, I am now sovereign over them, because they have been subjugated to calling me by my name. This is dumb for obvious reasons, but mostly because people are not required by necessity to use my name. They simply refer to me by that out of convenience.

    • @markhackett2302
      @markhackett2302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It isn't needed to get to that, though. WE ARE NOT SUBJECT TO A SEVEN DAY CYCLE. Only diurnal. And plants, being seasonal, as are migrating animals, those are based additionally on seasonal cycles. Nowhere is any being that is subject to a seven day cycle. We have seven NAMES for days, but that no more is us being subject to it, than the decimals being called one, two three, etc make us "subject to a ten name decimal system". One of those numbers, for example, was invented by the Indians and came West via Arabia, a lot later than 0CE. Romans used X, I, V and had a different naming scheme for numbers. Meanwhile the Chinese don't ave a seven day name cycle.
Humans aren't bound to a seven day cycle.

Regarding gravity, or anything else, it usually starts with an observation.... which leads to an hypothesis... which leads to methods of testing.. which leads to tests and test data.. which are analysed to see if they confirm (or not) the hypothesis.. which leads to conclusions, predictive models, followup tests etc etc.
An argument is just talking..... possibly ideas.... but it is NOT evidence.
Same for the bible. It contains claimed conclusions without doing all the work. If it was a proposed scientific publication it would literally end up in the trashcan.

    • @AdmiralBison
      @AdmiralBison 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not everyone is taught Scientific methodology in high schools, in fact the average American adult lags behind most of the first world in fundamental understanding in basic S.T.E.M.s and which I believe allows fundamentalist religious beliefs, anti-vaxs, flat earth and young earth creationism to proliferate and possibly get into legislation.
It would be good that critical thinking such as 'claims', 'burden of proof', 'verification' etc...was taught at an early age in all public schools because of their practical benefits.
'Comparative Religion' to be taught in public schools.
would also be good as a part of 'critical thinking' as it would help many Religious people examine their own beliefs through the lens of other Religions.
