Alexandre Dumas collaborated with writer and historian Auguste Maquet to publish The Three Musketeers as a novel in 1844. 1974 one is severely underrated. They managed to hit historical accuracy perfectly and make a somewhat dark story absolutely comedic. So much genius.
Yes. Watching the other versions is simply a waste of time.
The Adaptation in '73-74 is the best, in my opinion. It is the codex for all other versions to be compared to. Every actor portrayed their role independently, yet as pieces of a puzzle that perfectly fit.

Nobody did it better. It's a perfect adaptation: masterclass actor ensemble (Charlton Heston would be the last actor I cast as Richelieu and yet he did the job), balance of drama, adventure and comedy, balance of source material and filmmakers changes, rich social and political background (dirt and uglyness vs fancypant nobles and all inbeetween).
YES!! They managed to capture the book, which is excellent, in all of it's humor, drama adventure and love story aspects.
I think what struck me about the 73-74 version was how the duels and action scenes felt more realistic than other adaptations. The physical spacing between characters felt much better than the 48 version, where the combatants appeared to be far too close for it to be anything but the actors just going through the practiced motions while making it feel flashy and dangerous. 93 version was just simply hard to take seriously. The swordplay in the 73-74 version felt desperate, with combatants using the environment and anything nearby to help them in their deadly battle, and there was always the sense of "someone is going to die" even during the comedic fights. The musketeers were portrayed not as superhuman, like in the 11 version, but as cunning and resourceful and when they let their guard down, they paid for it. It was one of the things that inspired me to take up fencing and learn a little stage combat for fun, which only deepened my respect for the choreography in that version.
As someone that has read all of The 3 Musketeers books, and watch almost all of the different adaptations around the world let me tell you, one of the most book accurate rendition of the story is bizarrely enough the Mexican comedic CANTINFLAS one, wrap your heads around that.

my favourite version was the 1973 version
I love the 1974 version. This adaptation also includes "20 years later", which is my fav story arc of the D'Artagnan series.
I have to admit the only version I like is the 1973+74 movies; they were funny as hell and I loved the cast.
Started watching the Disney version and shut it off within minutes and I totally missed the 2011 version which I can see is no loss.
This is my favorite version too! Loved Richard Chamberlain as Aramis. (His costume was the best.)
My favorite is the 1970s version (both halves of it; they shot the whole thing and then released it as 2 movies-without telling the cast, who only found out about this at the premiere of the first movie. They were NOT happy. Their entire contracts had to be renegotiated, and contracts to this day have clauses to prevent this tactic. I have also seen the 2011 version, which struck me as...weird. (Airships? In the 1620s? And what were the Musketeers doing in VENICE??) The only thing I even liked about this version was the cute and sort of touching relationship between the king and queen.
My favorite d'Artanagn is Michael York in the 1973-74 version, but overall, my favorite is the 2011 version. It's a guilty pleasure, to be sure, but it's never boring.

Loved the 1974 William Goldman version and basically grew up on it. I saw the Disney version in a nearly empty theater one afternoon when I was recovering from food poisoning and couldn't do anything else. I've never seen the first or the last version.

As a kid I watched three musketeers 2011 and loved it (it was my favourite movie for a long long time)
Then I read book in hopes of finding out what happened after where movie ended
And wow the 2011 movie feels so bad now that I have finished original book

I've seen the last three. And the 1974 version is the best by far. The book doesn't need anything added to it- it was that good a book. So why mess with genius.
I love the 1993 version, and that's mostly because of the great chemistry between the three musketeers. Keifer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Charlie Sheen work so well together, and it's such a fun action adventure movie. I hate the 2011 version and it's been a while since I've seen the 40s and 70s version.
The first is the best, thanks to Kelly's athletic performance, but the second looks interesting also.

Then I'll read "The Man in the Iron Mask" again, to complete the trilogy.
I've seen all these in the video! I will have to say that the Gene Kelly adaption and The Musketeers TV show are my favorites.
I grew up on the 93 version, so it's very nostalgic for me, despite its camp and the departures from the source material.
Anyway, loving all the content! It's always very informative and well put together. I would love to see a by the book for The Scarlet Pimpernel. I've been looking for a good, faithful adaptation to watch, as I read it in 7th grade and every clip I've seen from an adaptation just didn't seem to feel quite like what I envisioned as a 12 year old.
Yes, I agree. The Scarlet Pimpernel is actually my favorite book. I like the leslie Howard one in the 30s and 80s one with Doctor Quin(Jane Seymour lol). I did not like the 1999 miniseries at all. Though none of them are very faithful to the book. If you love the book the Broadway Musical with Douglas Sills is AMAZING.

I recently listened to it on audio and it reminded me of just how much I enjoyed it as a child. Incidentally, it also was how I discovered that The Scarlet Pimpernel is only the first in a series of books. I had no idea! If you've read them, are they any good?
I've read about 5 so far and while not a good as the first they are pretty good I especially like el Dorado. It's good ever now and then to just read some swashbuckling escapism. Its cool you took theater I love plays and musical myself. Its nice that a lot of theaters are streaming plays at this time. Hope You keep safe during this crazy time and a have good rest of the day.
Liked the 90’s version, as a kid. Fell in love with the BBC , The Musketeers show, although didn’t like the last season...thanks for doing this! I have long list of period dramas and my notes on them so really appreciate your work on this. Super fun to nerd out on!!!
The only quality of the terrible version of BBc is that it only had three seasons.
They replace historical facts with a bad fanfic.
The writers were unable to mix history and fiction.
Just one more comment-I still get a kick out of the added villain character in the 90s version (shown at 5:00) being the 8th Doctor! (I'm a HUGE Dr Who fan)

The Gene Kelly Version is the best in my opinion
I've seen 74, 93, and 2011. 93 is my faviorite.
I saw the 90s movie in the movies (I was just getting out of high school) Despite the changes to the book (usually a deal breaker for me), I REALLY liked it. That said, the 70s duology of films is the last word in adaptations in my opinion. Yes, it did have Richard Lester's zany humour (see Superman II, Superman III, or A Hard Day's Night, and you'll know what I mean), but yet it stayed very faithful to the book. The only deviation I can remember is the final fight between D'Artagnan and Comte de Rochefort. But that was an iconic moment. So much so, that the 90s version copied it (with Athos fighting the Count, getting wounded, and young D'Artagnan taking over. And the same cast even filmed 20 Years After in the late 80s!
The 30s movie was ok, but it had too much of the swashbuckling flavour of films at the time for me.
Gene Kelly´s adaptation it´s from 1948. Anyway, that´s my favorite version.
The Three Musketeers (1973) brought me here...and The Real Three Musketeers TH-cam - SandRhoman History, is also a helpful reference of the four's characters' plot theme, one for all and all for one verse.

I have seen all. The best is the 1974 version. Why? Because it demonstrates something none of the others do: the weight, vigor and luck required to fight with swords. Most accurate considering the situations, surroundings and attire of the period. Twas not as easy as thought.

I have only seen 3 versions. I am not a big fan of The 3 Musketeers, though I have read all the books. Because of this the only retelling of it I enjoy is in an episode of Wishbone.

I have watched three adaptations: The Disney animated inspiration with Mickey, Donald & Goofy, the 1993 movie & the 2011 movie.
My favorite is the Barbie version 0:39
The Disney version is my favorite, a fun adventure all round - and nobody can beat Tim Curry chewing the scenery! I generally disliked the 2011 film except for the final D'Argtanan/Rochefort duel on the rooftops.
The 70s version does a great job of mixing the urban 17th century squalor with the glamour of the royal court, and the adventurous swashbuckling with the physical humour -all whilst remaining extremely close to the source material.
Are there any versions that include the characters Grimaud, Mousqueton, and Bazin?
Actually, the BBC did a serialized 10 episode version (interiors were shot on black and white video and exteriors on film) which includes the Musketeers servants. Brian Blessed(!) plays Porthos and it is excellent and the series draws more of its dialogue directly from the book(s). The mid 1960's video technology is distracting against the look of film.
The 1970s version is best of these by far - the Gene Kelly one is good, but dated, and the 1993 one is an insult to intelligence with not only the deviations from the book, but the much more black-and-white characters. Making Richelieu a sleazy pig who makes passes at the oh-so-innocent Queen, who is suddenly close to the King, like they were Disney royalty? Ugh.
I grew up enjoying the 90s version. Then later I did watch and enjoy the 40s one. I found the 70s one kinda silly and dull though it did have some good moments. I have not watch the newest version. Finally made my way through the book (Dumas is sometimes hard for me to read due because it can very long and detailed about things like clothes and food.)I liked the book pretty well though my favorite book by Dumas is still the Counte of Monte Cristo. He is such a clever,nuanced character. It's so interesting how he uses everyone's vices against them but then gradually realizes living for revenge can also hurt innocent people. I would like to see a video on that (Is there any version where he ends up with Haydee instead of Mercedes?)You do awesome work Btw. I enjoyed this video.

It's funny how the Three Musketeers are frequently adapted throughout cinema and TV history whereas The Comte of Montecristo one of Dumas' best books is not. Maybe it's harder to adapt or less known in english.

I've seen part of the Gene Kelly one. Caught it in the middle and turned it because I refuse to watch something from the middle. Saw the Disney and the last one.
I have seen have seen 4 versions of TTM (The '70s Four Musketeers w/ Michael York, the Disney 1993, The Musketeer in the late '90s, and the 2011 version), plus Man In the Iron Mask and a French movie about D'artagnan's daughter. I think I ike Disne version the best. Was pretty disappointed with the 2011 version.

The 40s version was released in 1948, not 1943.
I just checked out even the third part of the 2 book, The Man in the Iron Mask, and thought of the movie. Man was the movie way off.
Dumas was a Giant of Literature .....in an Era of Giants . What happened ?
To steal a line from Black Adder, comparing the 93 & 2011 versions to the 73 version, is "like excrement compared to creme."
The 1973 version should have been the last one ever made since it and it's sequel are pretty much perfect. All the version that have come out since have been infinitely bad....not just in comparison with the 1973 (although they do suck in comparison) but just generally have been very, very bad. Just sayin.

God, the 1993 version sucked balls. Stayed away from the 2011 version for obvious reasons. Gene Kelly is always worthwhile but his version is only fair in justice to the book(s). The 1973-74 Richard Lester version is/are the greatest of all with only one failing - the principles are distinctly older than the literary characters - a minor point with how truly excellent the cast is overall - themselves a who's who of remarkable actors at the top of their game. Simply the best.
Most faithful adaptation is french one from 1961. The best ones is 1973-74...1993 disney version is downright insulting - cardinal seducing queen and trying to kill the king, by a sniper! lol, in 17th century! musketeers trying to set stagecoach on fire with a wine, etc. it is just dumb movie. 2011 is absurd but in a funny way and more enjoyable than the disney imho...never saw the 1948 version but you can make a picture about how faithful it is by simple fact: Richelieu is not a cardinal there, they were afraid to offend roman catholics (political corectness of 1940s :D )
Just a small criticism: Could you please try and pronounce the French names or any non-English names as they are pronounced originally? I'm not even French and it irritated me every time. It does not have to be perfect, but trying would be great.
I'm sorry if this came off mean, but it's just how I feel.
