  • The Wild History slide presentation takes participants on a virtual journey through New Hampshire's past, focusing on changes in the land and how wildlife populations have responded over time. You'll learn why changes in habitat in our past are behind the decline of many of our rarest species today, and what you can do to help.

The fault of this sort of analysis is that it falls into the trap of viewing pre European north America as pristine. By that time the settlers got here temperate zone musk ox, horses, tapirs, 2 sorts of peccaries, giant beavers, 3 sorts of ground sloths, mastodons and mammoths had already been knocked out of the equation. Elk and bison followed soon after European settlement. In the past these big munching mouths kept much of the landscape as open grassland dotted with trees and groves wrapped in thorny/fruity hedge. Management choices should be made with these facts in mind.
