    Thank you for keeping us in the loop in this way. It makes the long, long, long wait for the next race a bit more bearable and keeps the anticipation exciting!

    Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I built double hull fibreglass boats with my father - from wood and plaster plug to finished product - and I was very confused by the narration.
    If you're wondering: the vacuum in the bag draws in the resin, which then spreads evenly across the plug, completely saturating the carbon fibre. After it dries the plug is removed and then a male mold is made inside the first one - this second mold is the production mold, off of which all the hulls will be created.

    that was quick, thanks! In the meantime, you can keep us happy with a lot more of these boat building videos! ;-) great stuff!

    Great little video explaining a critical part of the process. More pelase!

    The mould needs to be very strong and stable, additionally it will need to withstand high temperatures during the curing process.

    That is ORANGE. In 2005 Bruno Peyrons sailed this 36m catamaran around the world in 50 days to claim the Jules Verne trophy... The first VO65 will not be completed until Spring 2013.

    I didn't realize that they bagged the pre-impregnated carbon fiber. How long do they keep that under vacuum? Very cool boats.

    Retired. Designs always change and they beat the crap out of the hulls during the race. Stress cracks and damage everywhere.

    I've always wondered how many layers of CF they have to apply.

    Do they have a coating layer before the first carbon layer is laid onto the plug? How is this done? It is skipped in the explanation at 3:07

      Wax and release agents

    • @simpleman5494
      @simpleman5494 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@0718dm Obviously they won't just put usual release agent and wax onto the plug as the styrofoam is extremely weak. That's why I was asking. Has to be more like a filler which is sanded down again like that you use for surfboards.

    • @0718dm
      @0718dm ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@simpleman5494 The plug starts out as foam. Covered with a bondo like paste, reshaped, sanded and painted. Then sanded and buffed. Waxing happens after that.

    Beautiful Boats! At 7.42 the Red/White trimaran.. And the End Boat! That has got to be a cat or a Tri? Holly Smokes that's huge. Got to bigger than the O'Neil Cat in San Fran. Boy it will , or is flying now ..

    What is the reason for using carbon for the moulds? Seems overkill?
    Glasfibre wold be much more economic. Even if have to use twice as
    much comparing to carbon.
    Plz enlighten me! :)

    • @0718dm
      @0718dm ปีที่แล้ว

      For expansion reasons. Fiberglass and carbon expand differently. Best practices are to use the same material form the mold and the part that is being made.

    What is the expected life of the boats after the volvo? Is there any thought given to the boats after the race?

  • @Lux158

    the first mold was the hull not the deck!
    and the first layer of your carbon was rovencarbon, not biaxial..

    Lower costs.That's also why they switched to a one design. These boats costs many millions of dollars. If Puma thought that they could gain 1 extra mile per day for $1,000,0000 extra, they would jump on it in a second. This should open it up for more teams to enter.

    How thick is the carbon fiber being used

    • @Pimpmedown
      @Pimpmedown 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the video you can see them put on 5 layers where as the first layer was already hardened if i see it right. With just 5 layers you can know for sure that its something like 400g/m2 or thicker. Also there was at least 1 extra layer along the middle of the mold

    What type of resin is used?

    • @peter19970911
      @peter19970911 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For infusion we used in French Epoxy resin,for handmade works used polyester resin.
      But I think in this video polyester resin was used for infusion(I guess due to color).

    that was weak. A third of the time watching the presenter doing his ridiculous exercise instead of showing some actual cool production. I did like the shots with the cameraman, so cool, not.

    Imagine if all electricity in this planet dissapear so they cannt build composite then how human live using their culture. Fortunately countries that developing massive fiber carbon are not them, but china, turkey and some of africa country 😀

    This video could be more informative if the narrator/actor was an actual boat builder. He is very uninformed.

      Well everything he explained was right (kinda unorganized thou) and this video is just for interested amateurs i guess... its not to teach carbon-builders how to make a boat
