I saw her onstage as Salome in New York. It was also Andrew Davis’s debut at the Met. Gwyneth’s great specialty was being able to sing beautiful pianissimo phrases, and then unleash a tsunami of sound in the next passage. I adore her.
Dame Gwyneth’s voice will have your hair standing up with that Ferrari of sound. I’m so glad she’s still around in 2023, bless her. The female voice is quite something, I know her daughter is proud of her mother regardless of a mild this & that the beauty rings through. 🔔
The less than pristine 1980s DVD was worth this moving and powerful performance. Strong, warm and lush, and as noted below, with little wobble, Gwyneth not only sang beautifully but acted the depraved biblical princess perfectly. That was just the expression I would expect on someone's face lusting after a severed head! I don't know who the orchestra or conductor was, but they served Gwyneth and Richard Strauss well, and I like that the tempi was quicker than what the late, great James Levine would have taken. It added to the perverse drama. Thank you for posting this.
Yeah, I keep thinking severed head, severed head, severed head.... "They say that love has a bitter taste...." Good to dust off my Decadence credentials!
@@dimitrovajunkie there is a video of her as Aida, and the voice is beautiful and steady. I wondered if she pushed the sound past its natural limits in order to get this huge sound and got it wobbling. Sometimes voices record wobblier than they sound in the house.
@@Shahrdad Yes, that Aida video was from the late 60s. Her voice started to acquire problems in the 70s when she started singing more heavy Wagner and Strauss roles.

Her dresses are ALWAYS the most elegant ones!

Magnificent! Thank you!

está incompleto, faltan los acordes finales.
The voice sounds more grandmotherly than that of a 16 year old girl. Those high notes near the end are HUGE!
I believe a London critic unkindly referred to her Minnie as Granny Get Your Gun.

Does anyone know which hall this concert took place in?
Salle Pleyel.
Théâtre du Châtelet Paris
Mein Gott in Himmel! She is not wabbling too much.
