    I enjoy your videos, but have a CC: Often you place your camera settings at the bottom of the screen. They aren't there for long, so when I pause the video the settings are overlaid with TH-cam's timeline. It would be nice if they were in an area where that won't happen. Thank you for helping me learn!

      And making the text last a little longer on screen. I keep having to rewind, which is annoying in the end. May I suggest you go easy on the « liquify » tool in Photoshop... Useful video otherwise, thanks.

    Great video - I think it would be much more helpful if it showed a split-screen side-by-side of the photos taken with the different modifiers. Comparing them is difficult when there's a minute between seeing each photo.

    Questions:
    1. What Mic did you use to record?! Worked really well!
    2. What software did you use to edit?

    • @fjhphoto

      Camtasia 8 to edit and used a H1Zoom Mic with a lavalier. That's what I was holding at the end.

  • @KAGilligan
    @KAGilligan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done. Useful info. Nice to see you are having a good time while photographing. LOVE the bloopers! Hope your gear is ok. My only suggestion would be to place the camera settings on the top 1/2 or 1/3. When placed at the bottom, they are partially covered by the TH-cam timeline if you pause the video to look at the settings.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Ralph! I learned my lesson from this shoot for sure, haha.

  • @davidpoller6698
    @davidpoller6698 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. I notice you kept the model about the same distance away from the octas in all the shoots. Any particular reason for this? The sweet spot for best quality of light* is usually the distance from the light to the model being the diagonal measure of the light source. So with a 18" soft box, your best quality of light is to have the light 18" away from her. With a great big 60" octa, your best distance is to have the light 60" from the model. That may be why you noticed the 18" as having "harsh" light - it was too far from the subject. Thanks for the video, keep up the good work.
    *"best" is entirely subjective, of course, but the formula I mention gives soft light with nice wrap and transition to shadows.

      Aftab Khan You don’t need HSS in a studio for the most part because you don’t have to battle bright ambient light, which forces the use of a higher shutter speed.

    I dont know if the problem is on my Side (Opera and html5) but you show the photo, then you blend in the settings, which I can bearly read while I focused on the picture. When I want to pause the youtube Timer is over the settings :(
    It also would be Interesting which Flash Power do I need for the Octa´s. Can I go with a Godoxtt685 into the 38" Glow with HSS or do I have to step down to a 23" softbox?
    Other Question, would you rather buy a Godox ad600M or a A360. More power for a little bit more money (I dont need the ttl for 1 flash Settings)
    Otherwise I really liked the Video.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great feedback. Yes, if somehow TH-cam let me change the video with an updated version I would do that right away. I did a lot of changes after uploading the video. My light was on TTL but I know it was probably around 1/4th power and that's more than the tt685 on it's own. I'd go for the xplor for more power because that leads to more possibilities in my opinion.

    So by your light being on TTL mode it automatically adjusts for you?

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does but I recommend shooting manually now.

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No for these shots I did not. I rarely use gels.

    I have a Phottix 60x60cm, aswell as Neewer 60x60cm, thats (~23'') softboxes. Im looking for something of good quality that spreads the light really well.
    I want a good all arounder, mainly for outdoor shooting, (I don't own a studio - and I don't have assistants). I own three Manfrotto 1004BAC stands which I use with Nissin Di7000A speed lights.
    Given this information, what would you go for a 90cm(~38'') octabox or a 120cm(~47'') octabox. I'm pretty new to Octaboxes, I'm mainly a street/landscape photographer with little to no light knowledge, but I am trying to find a middle ground between good yet not so expensive gear, that can last for few years and still be versatile, I never used anything else other than Softboxes.
    Another question I have is:
    I really like the look deep octaboxes appear to give in photos, at least in studio, the dramatic effect really appeals to me. On the other hand, I don't own a studio, as mentioned above, and I'm mainly looking to light my subject from the front when using the octaboxes with soft light (indoors) or as 45º sidelight (outdoors). I know too many variables too answer to a zero clue light/portrait photographer.
    So, considering you can buy one and only one, what size/shape combo would you take and why?

    For these shots did you add softness in PS, or just minor LR retouching? Thanks and great video

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Vadim! I didn't add softness for the shots. All of these were minimally edited with only blemishes and stray hairs removed. Putting the light really close for all the shots helped give soft skin to the model.

      Thanks, also one more thing, for your off camera flash in TTL do you use auto iso, and keeping the rest in manual on your camera? Thanks

    • @fjhphoto
      @fjhphoto  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I keep the ISO on the lowest and aperture wide open so I can just worry about shutter speed.
