I’ve been trying to learn how to isolate the belly muscles for a belly roll. I really like your explanation on how to isolate each abdominal muscle. Could you please make a video putting it all together for a belly roll and even perhaps flutters? Thanks!
You explain things very well! Thank you for being so descriptive. I'm new to it all, but I find belly dancing (and yoga) a great way to stay in shape without having to go to a gym. 💖
Hi there and good day having some extra time this morning. and viewing many styles of Belly dance and observing the dancers behaviour exedra . (Before I actually take the dance lesson )The lady Sahira , is an excellent teacher and does things very professionally Good job!!
I know that this video is pretty old, but i really hoped to get a little help. I get contract the upper and middle abs, but I'm having a really hard time with the lower. You said try to straighten the curvature in your back and i do that but i still havent felt much in that part of my body whoch i think they are just weak fromcnot using but im not sure if im even contracting them in the first place. Is there a part of my body that will tighten if i touch it when contracting or should i just continue attempting and hope it will eventually strengthen them? I just really want to be able to belly roll and contract middle and lower abs in time to a beat as ive seen many talented dancers do, or some have said to get on all fours and try, would that help with trying to contract my lower abs if i got down on all fours and tried? Sorry for such a long comment and i really hope i could just get a. little advice. Thank you very much for reading. Also what you said about the uper and lower abs, like opening the chest uplike when you doing a chest lift and with the middle imaginnnning a thread through your belly button to back was very very helpful and helped me figure those moves out a lot easier. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
Here is another exercise you can try. Lay on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Feel the arch in your lower back (there is probably a space between your lower back and the floor.) Without pushing your feet into the ground try to flatten out your lower back on the floor using your lower abdominal muscles. This will be the same contracting you use to create the movement you are looking for. Let me know if it helps!
I can isolate lower abs, but not the upper abs. It's harder for me to isolate the upper abs because to do that, I need to pull my whole ribcage. And when I try to do that, I end up moving my lower abs too. What should I do? But none the less, this is a very useful video, you explain very well!
I totally understand! It's tough, right? Honestly it just took a ton of practice... try drilling both while lying on your back and while leaning over at the waist to get gravity to help you as your build up the new muscle skill.
Can anyone help me figure out how to engage my lower abdominal without my upper abdominal being involved/strengthened? I've just returned to dancing after 11 years off, and back when I was teaching I struggled SO HARD with the lower ab isolation. I canNOT do it without engaging my upper abdominal. Now that my muscles have atrophied from 11 years of not dancing, I am hoping to retrain them so that the lower abs can work without developing these overpowering upper abs.
Thank you for the instruction but can you please make the exercises longer so that it feels like an actual ab workout? I'd like something that I can follow along.
chariots8x Thanks for the feedback! I’ll have to make a more “exercise” oriented video soon! All my videos are more technique-based, but I love the idea!
I know this is old but I truly love the way you explained your lesson but I'm still not getting how to move my upper abs every time I try I end up isolating the lower instead of my upper abs
Hi there! Thank you for your kind words. :) Here's another idea to isolate your upper abs. Trying lying on the floor on your back with your knees bent and your feet on the floor. Now try lifting your shoulder blades off the floor. This should engage your upper abdominals more than the lower. The rectus abdominus is one large muscle, so it's not that you are trying to use a different muscle, just isolate one particular part of a larger muscle. I hope this is helpful!
Thanks for your comment! I would love to invite you to check out one of my full-length classes on Undulations that explains the abdominal isolations in depth. www.powhow.com/videos/sahira-belly-dance/belly-dance-level-i-upper-body-undulations/22146 I am happy to gift you this class if you can send me an email at sahira@sahira.cc I will give you a code to access the class for free! I am also available for online classes if you'd like more help one-to-one. Happy dancing!

That top ab movement is the trickiest for me
Agreed! It's tough to do and takes lots of practice. You can do it - I know it!

I'm definitely going to keep practicing this method. I have a feeling this will work for me, and I will get better. Thank you!!! :-) :-) :-)
So great to hear! How is your practice going?
It's still a work in progress.
Great video, thanks!!

Bend the knees and think about tucking the tail bone instead of focusing solely on the abdomen itself. You’ve got this 💪
I used to be able to do this easily as a child (and my brothers did too). Now I can do it again as a non-child. Ta.
Wonderful
Thank you for explaining it so simply! My abs hurt like crappp 😂
You got this!
Thank you for the instruction but can you please make the exercises longer so that it feels like an actual ab workout? I'd like something that I can follow along.
