Real old school NY joint with genuine history. Thanks for sharing this one. Slightly surprised by the lack of potatoe with the mutton. A small jacket would do the job nicely ... It's hard to find mutton in the UK nowadays so good to know its a thing at Keens!

Hi Lee I practically grew up on mutton. I was brought up by my grandparents who always used to cook Mutton and similar types of meat. Chicken, Turkey etc were very expensive long ago. I think also by my grandparents having been through the war. They didn't waste anything.

We were so happy to see you finally get a meal that you enjoyed, up to that point I was feeling bad that it was all going south, the managers education was unreal, you can tell his heart n soul is in that business, a first class review, loved it.
America really has changed especially in the last 2-3 years, its not just NYC, food quality is down, prices are up and the greed with tipping and service charges is beyond belief, everybody has their hand out, we have certainly cut back on eating out, the prices are killing us., Id sooner stay home and have scrambled egg or beans on toast than drop close to $50 for a no frills one course meal, it all goes down the same hole.

Wow! This my kind of thing, and my favourite meat. When you said you were going to a steakhouse I thought you'd have a steak, but I hoped you would have the lamb after mentioning it, and you did, thankfully, and It looked absolutely gorgeous. I don't know what the greenery was and I would have preferred some other type, buy hey. I might have had mine a touch more well done too, but I can't fault the meat and I'd definitely visit this place if I were visiting New York again. Top notch this was. A definite 10. Places don't usually last 100+ years if they're not good.

I've actually been to Keene's years ago. When you said NYC's most famous steakhouse, I was certain you were going to Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. Luger's has a distingushed history going back to 1887. Also excellent is The Palm, which has a theatre district location as well as an Eastside one. I don't think these steakhouses have any truck with mutton!

Incredible steakhouse and the service seemed exceptional, its the first time that I’ve seen someone actually do something for their tip in NYC. After your dismal foodie experiences of late including what must have been the worst fish and ch...errr whatever that flat thing is actually called, I was beginning to give up hope that you’ll find something decent in the most famous city in the world. Though the Silver Fox is probably right that you should try the dishes that he has suggested. Great vlog 😊

    One word... WOW!!! 😮
    BRILLIANT REVIEW!!!
It was a 10/10 as soon as you walked through the doors of that place, and it never budged from that rating.
There are little gems such as this dotted around New York City (please, if you haven't been, go to McSorley's Irish pub and to Fraunces Tavern, and please do an upload of them at some point). Please do more of these historical places (that are, comparatively, reasonable priced), and less of these franchise places.
That steakhouse is so steeped in history. On the one hand, it's veery English, and on the other it's entirely American.
For what you paid, for that level of service, for that location, for that history, and for that food and wine... CHEAP AS CHIPS!
The price you paid would've probably got you a couple of those greasy diner 'meals' from that place Damien recommended. No contest really.
The mutton looked spot on, the advice from the waiter also spot on, and you could probably have cut it with a butter knife. Everything about it was perfect. The chap who showed you around was brilliant, and his knowledge fantastic.
I'd give that man a 30% tip, and either don't tip in places where the food & service is sub-par (that place that served the round chips), or cut it back to 10% tip to those places. Places such as this steakhouse 100% earn their tips, and I'd tip them even if I didn't have to.
