    I had a pretty poor hatch rate last time I incubated. I’ve been told that dry hatching is the way to go. Definitely going to try it now! What’s funny is I hatched an egg under nothing but a heat lamp one time, so obviously humidity isn’t that crucial! 😂

      Thanks for reaching out. I’m sorry the last one didn’t go well. Incubation can be difficult. That’s so cool that you hatched am egg under a heat lamp! Dry hatching is definitely easier. I hope you make a video sharing your dry hatching experience! Today is hatching day for my shoelace method hatching egg speriment so hopefully this one will be a success too.

      I am so happy to hear you are getting your farm on! Thank you for sharing your videos. I just watched your hatching video and I love the name "Ninja" for your beautiful little chick. Congratulations on your beautiful babies. I love seeing how happy your children are about hatching the chicks. What a great experience. I just subscribed and I am looking forward to watching more of your videos. Figuring out the best incubation method for your area can be an experiment. You could try the shoelace method which I found kept my humidity stable. I made a video on it. Thanks for watching 😀

    I know it's not directly applicable but I do Quail and read a lot of people saying Quail (at least Coturnix anyway) seem to prefer dry hatching. A couple of the most prolific contributors of the BackYardCHicken forums say they dry hatch exclusively and seem to get as close to 100% hatch rates as humanly feasible with thousands of chicks.
    MyShire Farms said they dont add any water at all during the initial incubation and only raise it during lockdown, but the aforementioned BYC forum contributors say they dont even add water at the end during the lockdown and they never have bad hatches, while they say their amdient humidity is low and incubator humidity rarely goes above 50%.
    I mean, chickens are obviously a bit different being so heavily domesticated, but most birds incubate eggs in very uncontrolled environments, and usually during the hotter and dryer parts of the year, with much less overall humidity.
    There's a few people seem to think ambient humidity plays the biggest role in dry hatching here, but I'm more inclined to think it's like you said, where it's more consistency over quantity, because most people who talk of having good hatch rates, wet or dry, overall seem to all have one thing in common, which is consistent humidity levels.

    • @justonemorestoryfarm
      @justonemorestoryfarm  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for sharing your observations and research. I find it all so fascinating. I agree that consistent humidity levels seems to help with hatch rates. Both dry hatching and the shoelace incubation method had consistent humidity levels for me with 15 chicks hatching out of 22 eggs. I recently tried stack hatching and it was a fail. While the humidity stayed consistent with dry hatching, it’s a no turn method which I think affected the eggs as well as the lack of air flow with 40 eggs piled up. I made a video about it. I am curious to try dry hatching, the shoelace method and a third option to see how the hatch rates are at this time of year with each method. I am always trying to find the best hatch rates. Happy hatching 🐣

    Love dry hatching, but not just for 18. I 100% dry hatch since the first bird that zips bumps the humidity to ~70s. No added water needed and it seems to result in 100% hatch rates (for viable eggs). The exceptions of course are infertile eggs and early quitters. I've even had a 100% detached air cell hatch - 3 of 3 detached and one pretty badly saddled but all made it. 100% of the eggs that survive past day 10 seem to hatch. For my own eggs it's been 100%. Mailed eggs is usually just below 50% due to shipping damage, early quit or fertility rate.

      Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience. Those are some great hatch rates. I will give the full dry hatching method a try and see how it goes without adding water on the last three days. I’m currently stack hatching with my incubator filled with stacked eggs. I’ve had it as a dry hatch so far but I am tracking air cells and will add water if needed for this hatch. I look forward to trying your full dry hatch method after this one. Have a great day 🐣

      @@justonemorestoryfarm One thing I noticed with this hatch - air cells can be deceiving; only one of the Bresse eggs is what I would call large - even medium by grocer store standards. The air cell 'seemed' to take up half the egg on day 17. The chick looked to be in 1/3 of the egg, it lit up so much. It pipped on day 18, so it's head was in the area that lit up like a street lamp - I saw no shadow at all. It's hatching right now - day 20 and it looks like it solidly fills that shell. The others were similar; cells looked to take up 1/3 of the egg at least. 4 of the 5 are in the small/medium sized range. The smallest was actually the first to hatch on day 18 into 19 - an egg I would have never selected to hatch myself since it was oblong.

    • @justonemorestoryfarm

      Time of year and the location of your incubator will affect your humidity. My last two dry hatches were successful with a 30 percent humidity. I wouldn’t worry about the humidity being in the 30’s range if you are dry hatching. Happy hatching 🐣

    with dry hatching during the first 18 days how low RH is too low in your opinion?

    • @justonemorestoryfarm
      @justonemorestoryfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for reaching out. At 30 percent when I dry hatched, I had a lower hatch rate than when I incubate using distilled water to keep my humidity at 48-55 percent humidity. However, plenty of chicks hatched at with 18 days of 30 percent humidity. Personally, I wouldn’t want my humidity to drop below 25% because I would worry about the hatching eggs losing too much moisture.

    • @justonemorestoryfarm
      @justonemorestoryfarm  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for reaching out. I have experienced the overnight humidity dips and had successful hatching. I don’t have a lot of experience with dry hatching to be able to say how a hatch rate would be with that low of humidity overnight but it would be worth trying so you would know for future hatches. If it doesn’t work out you can always try the shoelace hatching method which really helped stabilize my humidity levels. Thanks for watching.

    So 30% humidity is good?

    • @justonemorestoryfarm
      @justonemorestoryfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for reaching out. 48 to 55 percent humidity is ideal for the first 18 days of incubating chicken hatching eggs.
      With dry hatching, your humidity level will be determined by your location and time of year. For me, at that time, it was 30 percent. I did have a successful hatch at that humidity level, but I have better hatches when my humidity is around 50 percent for the first 18 days. Dry hatching is easier and more hands off than adding distilled water as needed, though. I hope you try hatching some chicks 🐣
