- Cheap Shotgun Microphone for Filmmakers ($25! Is it any good?)
We're always looking for good audio, but how good can a cheap microphone be? Ulanzi sent us their $25 VM-Q1 microphone to test out... to be honest I didn't think it would be any good for the money, most cheap shotgun microphones aren't but actually if you're a filmmaker I think you may be like me and a bit surprised, this cheap shotgun microphone is actually pretty good!

What microphones do you use?
i use a moukey Mcm-1 mic looks the same as the ulanzi one in every way, bought it about 9 months ago for my sony zv-1, i would say the sound is clearer and louder than yours in this test, it cost about the same to be fair, same red mount, dead cat and foam, no phone lead though just curly mic lead.
I use a Rode Videomic Me L and a Saramonic Blink500.
Yes, I was quite impressed with the quality of this small microphone especially, considering it's price. And I expect with a little EQ adjusting it might even sound a little better. Thanks for this video!

The Rode sounds a little fuller but the VMQ1 sounds really good. Highly considering it.
I got mine for free with the iphone 13 ulanzi camera holder with handles. Another benefit over the rode is that the sairen doesn't need a battery.

I heard some bassy rumble and bad resonances, I suspect it is the shockmount to blame.

Yes I noticed that too... we’ve heard their might be a bug with the current iOS
The Rode does not sound a lot better, its sounds, kinda slightly better.

btw, somethings wrong with the phone test, i think the mic was not properly plugged or so, it was absolutely no difference in sound
It really looks like a clone of Rode Vlogger. Even design and color are very similar. Just like Amazon was selling the clone accessory of gopro.

I am not able to use this with my Android Phone? Any idea how to do it. I even tried using the open Camera app but still, my phone is not detecting an external mic.

That is a quite descent microphone but I don’t know if it would be compatible with my gopro hero 7. I had purchased a mike a while ago which claimed to be compatible and I ended up shooting an entire trip with no sound. Otherwise for its price it sounded quite good.
