  • Take a boat tour around Houseboat Bay, Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife NWT. We saw a special plane, a N3N US Navy open cockpit floatplane which was used from 1937 to 1944. It has one centre float to balance on, with two outrigger floats to keep it upright!.

    you guys should watch icelake rebels . it is a show all about this houseboat community. as long as they dont anchor on shore, they dont pay taxes. which is why most choose this life style. and it also shows how they get through winter

    Happiness is living in Yellowknife! I thought I was the only one who motored under the bridge. Guess not! Love Joe's old planes. Cool to see Max Ward's Turbo Otter again this year, along with the one Tindi is leasing. Houseboating here would be awesome, but a bit of work sometimes. Can't talk the wife into it. Take care.

    Are houseboats legal in Yellowknife? Does the city and Provincial official give you a hard time about building codes and permits?

    • @suchnothing
      @suchnothing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I know your comment was a whole year ago, but I know the answer to your question haha. The legality of houseboats is contested and uncertain. I read an article saying they don't pay municipal taxes and there are no building regulations. The city has tried, unsuccessfully, to assert jurisdiction over the boats, but the territory didn't allow it. But in other activities on the water, like tourist groups, the territory has decided they can actually assert some authority on the lake. So no one really knows what the rules are or should be, and all interested parties are constantly negotiating the situation and trying to figure it out. It's like who's line is it anyways. Everything's made up and the points don't matter 😂

    • @myopicchiwawa
      @myopicchiwawa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suchnothing thanks, I have Canadian relatives in Toroto, and the kids are basically unable to ever get on the property ladder due to the cost of a house in Etobicoke going up to nearly $1 M CAN. Only way to get a house is to inherit it.

    • @suchnothing
      @suchnothing 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@myopicchiwawa yeah I live in Toronto now, it's absolutely insane. I'll probably never be able to buy, and even if you can, trying to get a hold of a decent property is super stressful. My friends just bought their first house here (lawyer and computer engineer couple lol). They offered 1.3 mil on their first choice of house (a small 2 or 3 bedroom family home) and got outbid.
      Building a floating house out on Lake Ontario would be interesting 🤔 I was told when I visited Yellowknife that the rising cost of property in the city was a huge factor in starting the houseboat community in the first place. But I think the federal government (who is responsible for waterways in Canada, which is why the City of Yellowknife has no jurisdiction) regulates major commercial waterways like the great lakes a lot more heavily than less busy bodies of water like Greater Slave Lake in Yellowknife. Lake Ontario presents other problems as well, like not being safe to drink or cook with, and having really high traffic of large and powerful water vessels you have to look out for. I bet there are expensive docking fees if you want to get into town. I think the waters get more treacherous during bad weather too.

    • @myopicchiwawa
      @myopicchiwawa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@suchnothing I totally agree with you. Basically ordinary Canadians are shut out and international speculators are grabbing everything.
      The Government should build an artificial island like in Dubai then put tall buildings there but the caveat is at least 50% of the units are sold to Canadians of ordinary income, not just to foreign millionaires.
      Watch this video: amazing how they built that.
