    “If you awaken from this illusion and you understand that black implies white, self implies other, life implies death (or shall I say death implies life?), you can feel yourself - not as a stranger in the world, not as something here on probation, not as something that has arrived here by fluke - but you can begin to feel your own existence as absolutely fundamental.”

    I have listened to & enjoyed Alan Watts' talks over the decades -- even arising early Sunday mornings to listen to the talks on the radio in the 1980s.
    These current recordings suffer in two ways, in my opinion:
    1) the musical accompanyment ranges from superfluous to annoying. It comes across as an attempt to "gild the lilly".
    2) Background "white noise" on the original recording media has not been removed by modern filtering techniques.

    Fantastic commentary. I can see photography as a means of conveying the ideas in this video. In portraits, the person is in focus and the background is very much out of focus. By contrast, I can take a picture where the person and the background are in focus. In this respect, when I'm focusing on one aspect of an idea, I might be ignoring other aspects that can influence how I perceive that idea. I can apply this to people. If I focus on what someone is, black, white, tall, short, etc. I am ignoring WHO they are. In that sense, the WHO is out of focus and the WHAT is in focus. So, I am limiting myself on how I see that person. Of course, this can apply to many subjects and ideas in life. Not just people, but, other ideas, concepts, cultures, etc.

    Professing themselves to be wise they became fools. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. ✝️

      Why 'fear' the Lord though??

    • @felixmoyoedonmi
      @felixmoyoedonmi ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The fear of the Lord is actually the beginning of foolishness. The only thing that should never be feared is the Lord.

      @@felixmoyoedonmi Oh okay.
      I thought you may have been referring to the line that 'God is a fearing God' .... etc.

    ding ding ding ding ding is all that I can hear lol I wish Alan would tell that confounded piano player to stop dinging those keys while he is talking.

      I love the piano. It makes the video

      The piano is trying to add some form of emotion. Musical instruments are used to trigger the brains senses, to allow the words to become spellbinding or even sound more powerful than usual.
