I agree more with Koshore that China would raise peacefully but if provoked by external forces, it would react prudently and not be humiliated as in the past. China is well known for not interfering internal politics of other nations and wouldn't seek to dominate the Asia region At the same time, it wouldn't keep quiet if US seek to dominate the region. Economically I believe China can win as well as in other areas. US would be pulled back by its uncontrollable foreign debts.

@@TerrySalahatWell, certainly like most countries on earth, China has disputes with its neighbours, near and far, on borders, trades, technology, security, etc, etc, but there is no hot war that involved/involves China in the past 45 years. China is busy developing itself and build defence capabilities for itself.

On question 1, I think John M is wrong because he does not understand Chinese people and China's history. Former foreign minister of Spore, George Yeo gives a very convincing answer to why China will not want to dominate Asia militarily.

John M just shows how the Western mentality is working. He sees China purely from the eyes of Western mindset, while Mr. Kishore M being an Asian understands China pretty well. Also, question no. 1 sounds ridiculous and an understatement at best. China has been rising, it's out of the question, without wasting a single bullet!

    1. The heated debate on the possibility of China overtaking the USA is basically immaterial.
    2. China is not concerned about the various comments and radical criticism from outside world. China mainly focuses on the long-term strategy and pragmatic approaches so as to achieve the overall good results , including the improvement of ecosystem , minimization of desert areas , advancement of space exploration , uplifting the welfare of its 56 ethnic groups , greenery of the whole country , implementation of the principles of mutual respect , mutual prosperity and peaceful coexistence for the whole world , etc.
    3. China firmly upholds and implements its motto : EMPTY TALKS RUIN COUNTRY ; SMART AND HARD WORK PROSPER NATION ( 空谈误国 ,实干兴邦 ).

On basis of China's historical records, China will rise peacefully unlike the USA that has a history of peace for only 16 years out of 250 years. Whereas China has not fired a single bullets in four decades despite all the ups and downs in the border conflict as well. You may not agree with me but this is how you perceive and how and where you have been raised influence our thoughts. The USA may have dealt with German, Japan and Soviet Union effectively, but China is different this time on basis of its largest trade with the world communities and they would take century of humiliation as guiding force to take their country forward.

With due respect to Prof Mearsheimer who I admire greatly for his principled stance on the Palestinian rights issue, I believe he is very off base on this one. To compare America's former potential rivals (Imperial/Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and Soviet Union) to the massive size and economic dynamism that is China that has seen no equal since the rise of America itself after WWII should not be underestimated. Over the decades since the fall of Berlin and USSR, America has not only lost its economic vitality but now increasingly its cultural and diplomatic influence. With the exception of several client state lapdogs, who in the global community genuinely want the US to lead the world as its policeman? In particular when it has proven again and again the hypocritical farce of its own professed "rules based int'l order"? The world is changing fast, and the world has options other than this outdated leviathan.

John belongs to the old school who still cannot shake off his old outdated paradigms. While Kishore is a pragmatist with sharp eyes to the future. The reality US's a permanently warring but bankrupt entity while China keeps building relationship and is awash with great wealth. Militarily, China has tried & tested a working hypersonic glide vehicles that once launched has no known defence. US has none. But in a nuclear war scenario, both will go extinct nobody wins. ❤from indonesia.

I wonder if Mearsheimer has studied (not just read) the 'Art of War' section on governance. Chinese have learn through decades of war that destroying your enemy (or competitor) is not desirable b/c you are left with MORE issues to undertake and resolve; it is not about the war itself but rather the consequences for the victor!. If you are not able to govern yourself (due to unmanageable bureaucracy), it makes no sense to conquer anything b/c you are adding more responsibilities. The western approach is to just pass it off (in righteous voice: let them choose), will fail b/c they will resort back to how they are naturally. You have to full take on and fully assimilate the people as your own - only then can you say you truly won. China knows this too well and has NO desire for more bureaucracy and take on other people's problems.
Also, if you are the regional superpower, of course neighboring nations WILL naturally gravitate towards you and take on influences. Similar to wanting to hangout with the cool kids and picking up good and bad habits. This does not mean China is pushing their agenda. Think of China as the equivalent of the EU, it is much more than just 1 country. Unlike the EU, China is trying to unite everyone into a central governance model, which they have evolved.

  • @ericquek673

It is unfortunate that Professor Mearsheimer has not understood Chinese logic and thinking which is essentially grounded in Confucius thoughts. As Mahbuhani repeated state that China even during her period of economic, political dominance never once tried to invade, conquer other countries. Westerners concept, logic is so different than Chinese. Our good professor logic is inevitably a Western concept which misunderstood China. I have high regards for both. As a Chinese, and have been to China, have relatives, business partners, I know how majority of the Chinese think. A Caveat : If we from the West keep provoking China, this would be a different story.

1st of all, it’s MOST appropriate to remove the word “win, won or lose”! Cause this wordings are just a very one sided, very very narrow views (rigid mindedness, stereotype mindset) from the west (of just two centuries domination) without any thoughts about other cultural’ value and believes! In simple terms, there ARE ways beyond just “win lose” mentality! The values and principles of Asia, specifically China and the regions, ARE of ZERO interest about win or lose! Asia, with thousands of years of histories, are more concerned about prosperity of its own, as compared to the “hegemonic win lose mindset” of the west! That’s the very basic reason, even when, Asia, specifically China, for thousands of years, in those days with its formidable forces, are not concern or have zero concern or interest about who win who lose, let alone who dominate any part of the world! History proven it, and even now, China has ZERO interest about power domination. It’s all about business trading, that’s IT! 2nd, that’s also the very basic reason, John in his own, is not Chinese or for any matter, Asian, and DO NOT have any cultural values or principles of ASIANs, or Asia mindset, that will never ever truly understand Asia’s way of life! In other words, Asia on its own, do not like to meddle into other country’s internal business, or pointing fingers, or lecturing others, how to lead their way of lives! Asia’s way of livelihood are based on respect, reverence of other cultures, values, principles, and keeping others as it is, and doing business dealing as it should and would be! These are the points for the west to learn! It’s not and never always about just west! In simple terms, the west has to learn - west mindset is NOT the world mindset! Hegemonic mindset must be taken down to understand the WORLD!

If I should at what he fears to add was that the US has been able to win German, British,Japan and Soviet Empires because it took a wars for them to be weaken, wars that the US never fought directly.
China will win because it has chosen the method of economic which is the real war not armor.

China will try to rise peacefully whereas USA tries to maintain her domination of the world. As of now USA is already in a difficult position due to her debts, deindustrization, inflation, rising unemployment (full time employment), deterioration of infrastructures, internal bikery between Republicans and Democrats, declining number of STEM graduates, the gap between the rich and the poor and also declining usage of dollar in international trade. Whether the competition turns into a hot war depends on how China utilizes her advantage (industrial might and control of critical materials, Galium, Germanium, Antimony) to "suppress" USA.

China proven through history is mainly concerned with holding their country together and Yuan dynasty were mongols and not Han Chinese. On a more realistic view, China would want to rise peacefully but US being a warlike hegemonic nature will not accept it without causing wars directly or indirectly thru proxy wars to bring down China economic advancement. The outcome will either be China with such tolerance and wisdom could avert a war or US desperation in provoking China with such core and sore issues like Taiwan's declaration of independence which China would have no choice but to respond militarily. On the question of will China win, history has proven again proven that China is the only country which has an unbroken history of 4-5 thousand years and with many dynasties like Han, Tang an Ming at the top of global eminence, far dwarfing US empire of less than 300 years. The culture and resilience of a civilisation has brought China back to become the second biggest economy in a span of 40 years and we are not setting a dateline for China to overtake the US. Another few more decades is nothing but a short period in history.

He established diplomatic and trade ties. But not a single petty chiefdom was colonised or enslaved. Now compare that with Columbus who sailed 90 years later. He had 3 ships and 90 men. What was his legacy? Conquest and enslavement and colonisation. Your Western smug ignorance is why the world is sick of you. That is why there is a long line of countries hoping to join BRICS
