  • Almost three decades after the biggest battle since World War II was fought on the African continent, mechanical skeletons litter the landscape of southern Angola and many deadly dangers in the form of landmines remain hidden in the soil, taking their toll on innocent civilians.

In 1987 or 1988 I saw an endless column of damaged SADF armoured vehicles , caspirs and bufolo were among them. The vehicles were transported on the road between oshakati and Ondangwa heading to Ondangwa on recovery vehicles as they could not move on their own. Some vehicles had holes throughout their bodies. Is anyone with information on this? How they got damaged and where were they when it happed?

Yes losses on booth side, but also the turning point for the the apartheid apologist. This was a battle which if went on SADF would not be able to sustain. Therefore negotiation started.

Salute me amigo - my attempt at Portuguese.
Nobody that takes part in a war actively wins. Ask the family of those that never returned.
We, the dumb people, listen to our politicians, and only wake up after the dust is settled, when those that started the war, have taken all they can, and left the country with the loot and their family's in tact, while we remain and try to assemble the pieces.
Respect to my fellow Africans, from an ex soldier that was there.

bottom line: 3000 South African troops operating on their own border, against 30,000-50,000 troops flown in from across the world, to fight an ideological battle.
an incredibly dangerous group of people. and i dont mean militarily ofcourse, but rather ideologically.

The Cuban army / airforce never defeated the South African forces, and the Cubans know that very well, despite what they say or would make the world believe. They received a serious klap from the SADF, and, if the South African forces were larger than 3,000 troops, they would have destroyed the Cubans completely.

So, that is why the boers agreed to give Namibia its freedom after so many years? Don't you see how contradictory that is? the bush war's purpose was to keep SWAPO at bay, thus preventing the independence of Namibia, so to sign a peace treaty where you agreed to give up your claim to Namibia in exchange for a foreign army to leave proves your leaders were not so convinced they'd lose the war in the long run. If they did not believe that, they'd never have agreed to leave Namibia. They had refused United Nations calls to do so in the past.

Of course it is always hard to agree that you were defeated, how ever maybe SADF can agree then that they were repelled from Angola. Think of 1975, they almost reach Luanda, but later they were driven away by Cuban, yet they (SADF)still denying that they were defeated by Cuban, what a pathetic. It is interesting that this particular battle is historically consider the turning point of post world war 2 colonialism. Both sides claim victory but as an American the military victory is not the endgame- the political agreement is. The SADF like the US military was never defeated on the battlefield but loses the political goals. I would agree tactical victories were achieved especially with a smaller force but in the end the SADF withdrew- why?? Military Analyst point out the Cubans achieved air superiority, the Soviet missile defenses made air to ground support very difficult, and the South African public was wary/sensitive of any high casualties. Hence military superiority could not dictate the peace agreement. The Cubans Russians East Germans did their job. Within South Africa the ANC viewed this as the beginning of the end for Apartheid South Africa. With eventual peace I wonder how much has changed except each nation has a new political elite that stick their hands in the public trough at the expense of the people they fought for.

SA had two goals to stop Cuba coming further South and to push them back to where they started from... they achieved both, then at the negotiation table they agreed to leave Angola only if Cuba left as well. Cuba was forced to leave... SA one.....on the battle field Cuba lost nearly 5000 soldiers SA lost 31.... Cuba lost 9 Migs SA lost 3 Mirages... Cuba lost around 90 tanks and APNC and other vehicles SA lost 3 tanks all recovered and around 6 other vehicles.... Cuba lost two of the Soviet unions latest anti air launchers the SA 8 one South Africa kept the other we gave to the CIA.... SA forces kept the Formation in battle while the FAPLA and CUba forces break ranks and ran... 47th FAPLA bigrade was completely destroyed by SA and the 16th was left in tatters and forced to retreat being combat inefective after that.... so ground battle was a complete success for SA.. in desperation Castro executed his top general and took personal control of the war sending in more troops being the told number of Cubans to around 45 000 Facing SA's 3000 - actually by that time SA had withdrawn it's troops so there where only 2000 in the combat area..... Cuba threated to attack and invade South west Africa but before that peace agreement was reached and they where all forced to withdraw.... what Cuba didnt know at the time was SA had been calling up 14 000 additional troops to counter the 45 000 Cuba braught in..... whats funny is people always say SA was the invader... but SA was asked to come in and help.... SA also only ever had as much as 3000 troops in ANgola... thats is hardly an invasion force... Cuba on the other handle pushed there way in.... and they always had far more troops in Angola troops they stationed at various cities.... thats sounds more like what an occupying force would do... get lots of tropps in and take over towns and cities... SA never took over any towns in Angola they stayed in the bush , they never had an occupying force, just one to push the Cubans back to where SA felt they would be safe... hope this helps make up your mind

SADF won. The stats are available now showing the casualties on both sides, tanks etc and aircraft destroyed and it is clear that SA inflicted more than 4000 casualties on FAPLA and Cuban forces while suffering only about 1/10th or less in casualties.

02:10 Who won? If South-Africa had not gone belly-up, giving up 'apartheid', Namibia, and government; the Cubans would roll down whole the way to Pretoria... It would be quite illogical if South-Africa had won, to give it all up as a consequence of its victories! The failure that South-Africa did make was that it had not immediately supported Portugal from 1960 on wards with military involvement to keep Southern Africa stable and under control! Ideally, it ought to have united itself with Portugal, and Rhodesia, to keep business running...

The Cubans had no chance of rolling "all the way to Pretoria". They and their communist allies got heavily beaten at Cuito Cuanavale. So how would they roll all the way to Pretoria? Total nonsense. They lost 94 of their 155 tanks and at least 4,800 men dead. A Canadian missionary doctor told me of the evidence that the Cubans, Russians and Angolan communists had lost.
